Why I Want to Go: Feast of Folkestone 17

From the beginning, Feast of Folkestone has stood out as a huge landmark feast.  Its a great way for people to have a fantastic meal as a group before a long questing event.
Not only do people get a belly full of yummy food, but they get served "Family Style", which fits in with the theme of Folkestone in a beautiful way.
Aside from snarky servers and good food, there is always an auction, so bring your gold to bid, bid, bid.  Just double check who you are bidding against.
So pack your armor, sharpen your blades, but wear your finest for the Feast itself, as you never know who is going to be noticing, and we all want to look good for each other.

Putting it Into Practice Part III

Putting it into Practice III
Jason “Aeston” Rosa

In my last article about practice, I attempted to explain why it is important to have a philosophy that defines your practice and that helps the organizers of your practice establish norms to continuously pursue their ideals. Today I will attempt to look a little bit more at the practicality of running a practice and how to effectively structure that practice to give everyone the opportunity to remain engaged and learn the most.

Again, the way we have decided to do things at UCONN is only one of countless structures people have found to make their practice successful. I will, however, discuss some of the conventions we use and explain why we use them in the hopes that others can gain some insight into the structure they adopt.

One-on-one time: I mentioned this in my last article, but the chance for participants to practice individually is very important. Again, this is because a lot of invaluable training and learning can happen during that time. Some of this section of practice can be “freeform”, without any specific direction as people stretch, warm up, and get into practice mode by sparring. Some of this one-on-one time can also be structured through a drill. Drills can be used in this case to ramp up the rigor and speed of the fight practice and to increase the diversity of the individuals that fight one another. Two drills we commonly use that can aid in this:

10 More Questions with Alysha "Sir Kyntela" Metcalf

10 More Questions with Alysha "Sir Kintella" Metcalf

1) What achievement either in or out of character are you most proud of?
I think I'm most proud of The Event Which Must Not Be Named series. What started out as a stray idea tossed around between Lani and me at a cookout turned into a now five-year plot that has a sizable PC base. Our first event had humble beginnings, with barely enough PCs to make cap, and nowadays we often exceed the cap just with the Friday night quest. I'm proud to say that we've consistently thrown a weekend-long questing event for five years during a time where Friday night/Sunday day questing seems to have diminished. I also like to think we do a good job of listening to our players, taking in feedback, and trying to improve the player experience with each event. I'm proud of how my own event-holding skills have grown over time; I learn something new and valuable with each event we throw.

2) Are you a fighter or a caster? Have you always been? How did you choose?
Fighter. This October will mark 10 years in the Realms for me, and I've been a fighter the entire time. I chose fighter initially because I was intimidated by the prospect of learning and remembering a bunch of spells. I stuck with it for the pikes.

3) Have you ever owned an artifact, memento, or magic item  that has meant a lot to you, and why?
I haven't owned many magic items or artifacts throughout my Realms career, but one item that means a lot to me is Perseverance, which I got at Pressure Point- Flashback for receiving the Spirit of Pressure Point award. I've actually never used it, but just having it reminds me of what I was able to accomplish at that event.

4) What group of people do you spend the most time with and why?
At events I tend to hang out with a good variety of people from different Realms groups: Rhiassa, Grimloch, Ashenmark, Folkestone, and others. I spend the most time with my fellow Rhiassans and with Grimloch. Rhiassans, naturally, are my closest OOC friends. In the rare event that I'm PCing, Rhiassa probably decided to play as a group, so I'm likely to be spending time with them IC as well. Through Ben, I've become OOC friends with a lot of Grimloch members too.

5) Who is your best friend in character and why?
Sir Gwen of Rhiassa (Lani Grayson). We started our Realms journeys together as "Rhiassa Girl 1" and "Rhiassa Girl 2" and have had many adventures since then. Usually involving Gwen tripping over things on night quests and startling herself. We work very well together as a fighter/healer combo, and I don't even mind when she inappropriately grabs me to repair my chest armor.

Besties and Messy.

6) What event or moment had the greatest impact on you as a player?
I'd say joining Rhiassa at N/S War '08 was the defining moment that led to many of the subsequent events that had a large impact on me as a player. That set me on the path to becoming a knight, becoming an event holder, and overall becoming a contributor to the community.

7) What event or moment had the greatest impact on your character?
Many of the impactful events in my Realms career have affected me more as a player than a character. This probably blurs the line between IC/OOC, but I'd have to say the first time I won Champion of Rhiassa had the greatest impact on my character. It was Kyntela's first official title, and was a huge source of pride for me as a female fighter character.

8) What is your most embarrassing moment, either IC or OOC?
I'm actually having a hard time coming up with an answer for this. I tend to laugh off awkward moments pretty easily, so don't really get embarrassed. I'm sure there are plenty of moments from past ToCs or Uncle Cecils' I *should* be embarrassed by.

9) What is the best piece of advice you'd give to other players?
I think I said this in my first 10 Questions, but don't be afraid to get involved. If you see something you want to get involved in -- leading a quest, joining a group/guild, performing a bardic, throwing an event, etc. -- just do it! The worst thing that can happen is you find out it's not for you. You get out of this game what you put into it, so you won't get much if you're just a passive bystander.

ToC 2016

10 ) What is the most important thing you've learned through the game?
I've learned so much through the game and the people I've met while playing that it's tough to narrow down an answer to one most important thing. One of the most important was definitely learning the value of stepping outside my comfort zone. Roleplaying, public speaking, running events, participating in events like Pressure Point, are all things, at some point in my life, I would never have pictured myself doing. Realms has forced me into situations where I've had to overcome personal fears and obstacles, which has better equipped me to do the same outside of the game. Without the game, I probably wouldn't have done things like Tough Mudder or ziplining in my personal life, which are both experiences I'm glad to have now.

Missive to Dagger, AKA, What You Missed, Monster Island Recap!

What You Missed, Monster Island
by James "Sir Tao" Murphy

Dagger,

I regret to inform you that at this time we can offer no help from the mainland. A brave and diverse group were assembled but alas bad luck started even before the ship set sail on Saturday.
Pirates stole the boat that the group was supposed to take to the East. However the adventurers were kind enough to help recover it.

I understand it was guarded by several waves of pirates, some that were briefly filled with the power of Neptune and then blew themselves up. It was quite a mess.

I understand the underground passage was long and twisty, but ended quite near the hidden cove where the ship was tied, and it was tied well.

For the group to get down into the cove they did have to climb down a rock face with only a heavy rope for help. But once they reached the bottom they discovered many pirates that were standing guard. In the cover of darkness the group was able to stay somewhat quiet to get a majority of the group down the rock before pirates noticed them and started attacking.

This is when the players first noticed the ship. We had commissioned a large vessel as it had to cross the eastern ocean. It was 35 feet long and 10 feet wide. And it was “chained” up. Many of the chains had alarm bells so that when the group started to untie the ropes more pirates would appear and attack. In the end the group got away from the pirates sailing the ship back to Portsmouth harbor. The deck hands had quite the job to get the ship ready for the morning launch.

With the bad luck of pirate problems even before they stated we should have known it was not going to go well.

So the group set out to help start the diplomatic process. Unfortunately it was nearly wrecked on an uncharted island.

The group tells of an island that was overrun by monsters and cannibals.  The island had several different dragons, a demon, giant spiders, tar monsters, hydra’s ogres, giant Cyclops, giant snake, sea snake, smaller Cyclops, minotaur, turtles, enchanted trees, octopus, an eye of the deep, piranha (that are in the ocean, weird), baby squids, living lava, ghost making shadow monsters, chaos barriers, multiple wooden puzzles, several flat puzzles, pits, stepping stones, stepping rings, and one overworked Ensign Smith.

Ensign Smith was able to assist the party with telling them what was needed to fix the ship. This was fortunate that any of the crew survived as the group reported that soon after they wrecked two Smoke dragons arrived to look at the new arrivals. They talked of many things but the most important was that the island was blowing up soon.

After many adventures the group also reported that the volcano under the island had a magic imbalance that was causing the island to explode if it was not fixed. Someone in the party decided that a dagger would be the vessel for the magic. Hearing this I was surprised that only a small dagger was considered when the magic could have been transferred into anything, to do almost anything, with the proper ritual. I guess they were still thinking of you when this decision was made.

It should also be noted that one of the adventures gave a year and a day of service to a demon. We will not see the Merchant, as he was called, again for quite some time.

Well I am sorry to say that at this time you will have to solve this problem another way. We can’t afford either the time or the gold, to mount a second expedition. Maybe in a year or two people will have forgotten how unlucky this attempt was.

Good luck with your endeavors

What You Missed, Avalon Questing

What You Missed, Avalon Questing
Editors note, though a good time was had by all.  This event did not meet legal requirements due to low attendance.  From these photos though, that didn't stop quality props, serious puzzles, and apparently a dance off.

10 More Questions with Ethan "Drike" Burek

10 More Questions with Ethan "Drike" Burek
1) What achievement either in or out of character are you most proud of?

Probably placing 4th(??) in Order of the List last year. I did a lot better then I thought I was going to!

2) Are you a fighter or a caster? Have you always been? How did you choose?

Fighter. Tried that whole caster business. Not for me. Totally not for me.

3) Have you ever owned an artifact, momento, or magic item  that has meant a lot to you, and why?

Yeah I own my void magic items. My character worships the void and I feel like having magic items from the place which you worship makes my character fit. It's like a puzzle, you know?

4) What group of people do you spend the most time with and why?

My nation, Invictus. They are my friends and family and they know me better than anyone else. So I'm happy to spend time with them.

5) Who is your best friend in character and why?

Quinn! She is my best friend in and out of character. Well, she's also my girlfriend out of character so that means I kind of have to deal with her, right?

6) What event or moment had the greatest impact on you as a player?

Probably when I was NPCing at Grimloch questing at night and I was in a group of zombies in the woods and at the top of our lungs we screamed "Flesh!" And ran towards the PCs and watched them watch in horror as we rushed forward them.

7) What event or moment had the greatest impact on your character?

I'd most likely have to say beating Graham and like 4 other people in Queens war one year. I don't know the other people all I remember is the fight versus Jay and I. It was a memorable fight. I still have the picture too. It's pretty sweet.

8) What is your most embarrassing moment, either IC or OOC?

Oh, god! This last weekend at Monster Island I was so tired I called my dad, Rillian, my character name, Drike, on accident... I literally threw my 6'6 on the ground and walked away for a few seconds while all the NPC's and PC's died of laughter.. Good one, Me!

9) What is the best piece of advice you'd give to other players?

Fight your best and even if you lose take something out of the fight to remember and work on next time.

10 ) What is the most important thing you've learned through the game?

You should always give your 120% because if you don't something you want might slip through you fingers and you'll have to try it all over again.

Magi Round-Table Follow-Up: Divine Aid by Mikey "Janus" Donnelly

At the Feast of Highbridge this past year, the Order of the Magi held a Round-Table discussion about spells in the realms that were either ambiguous or cast incorrectly.  The full list of spells from the discussion can be found here  but I wanted to prompt a discussion today about the two confusions that occured with the spell divine aid, and hopefully generate some discussion on it (or even reach a consensus).

As a reminder, the spell divine aid reads:

This spell allows the spellcaster to send a request for aid to a higher power. The request cannot be specific and the higher power may send whatever aid they see fit. This spell comes with no guarantee that the EH won't simply listen to the request and say "No." This spell cannot create an effect that will last beyond the end of the event, other than for healing purposes. A spellcaster who uses drama and theatrics has a better chance of success.

So, what are the questions?  The first question is what counts as a "specific request" for the purposes of Divine Aid?  Clearly a request such as "Please grant me a cry of life" is specific, while a small ritual, followed by the call of divine aid is not specific at all.  A few marshals that I am aware of draw the line at a general statement of what you want help with, for example "Please help...we are all dead" or "we are trying to fight against Pathos, please help!".  Personally, I feel as long as a desired result is not specified other than "aid" or "help" or other vague terms, it should be allowed.

The second question is if the caster can choose who the higher power is.  Personally, due to the wording of the spell, I feel the answer should be yes as the spell allows you to send the request for aid to a higher power.  That said, a marshal can always override this and have whoever they want answer, and some people view the spell as "it doesn't specify they can direct, so they can't."

What are your Views on these questions?

What other questions on the Magic System would you like the Magi to discuss?

What You Missed, Event Which Not Be Not Named V

 What You Missed
By Justin "Dresden" Theriault
Arriving at Hogwarts, I found a once fun, open and competitive learning environment had been transformed into a land of rules and consequences...
Trouble soon came in the form of a student being lost in Forbidden Forrest, having been sent their on detention by one Delores Umbridge- head of the inquisitorial squad. Why, you ask? Well during one of her lessons a student sneezed, and the lost student had said 'bless you' which apparently counts as "speaking out of turn" with Ms. Umbridge. Heading into the Forest, the other students kept the perilous creatures at bay long enough to find some fairy eggs. (At this point the humidity of the forest got the better of me and I went back to the Slytherin common room). I learned from the fine upstanding Slytherin, Swoop, the fairy eggs were fed to some creatures, which got us to a line of fire elementals that needed to be doused with Auquamente. The lost student was found with no voice (it was stolen by ghosts) A puzzle needed to be solved to free our classmate and return her voice, while that was being solved ghosts were possessing people and there were wolves. The students made it back to Hogwarts. Everyone was told to meet for class with Delores Umbridge at Noon sharp.

Why I Want To Go: Avalon Questing

Im thrilled to see the idea of play and help come back to our schedule.   All too often we see the same people NPCing tirelessly over and over.  With this style of questing, everyone gets a chance to play, even the long haul NPCs.

This event is broken into three parts, each a story told by a different story teller.
Choose to help a friend find his lost love (they are only a little undead), meet the challenges presented by a mysterious woman (seriously, what could go wrong), or help find a missing daughter in some potentially haunted woods.  (Why not bring a picnic?)

No matter which two quests you play in, and which you choose to help in, this is a great event, especially for $10 ($8 if you pay via paypal)

Why I Decided to Run Team Snake Cult at QoH by Nataliya "Shader" Kostenko

Why I Decided to Run Team Snake Cult at QoH

by Nataliya "Shader" Kostenko

I decided to run a team primarily for two reasons: so I could get newer UCONN players involved in the game, and so we could all have a little more fun.

Last year at UCONN, Alexa and I really focused on recruitment for SMAC and the Oaken Guard. While we did get a lot of people initially, interest and attendance started to wane midway through the year. We also noticed, at last year’s Queen of Hearts, that the larger the teams got (and the fewer of them there were), the less we as newer players felt like we were actually contributing. I thought that maybe if I could throw a team composed mostly of newer players and give many of them important roles at Queen of Hearts—one of the largest events of the year—they would feel less like canon-fodder and be more likely to stay with the game past their first few months of SMAC. I obviously also wanted to make the team as fun as I could for everyone on it. I have definitely noticed that the competitive spirit at events as big as Queen of Hearts—while a good thing over all—sometimes makes the more veteran realms players lose sight of the importance of just having a good time over winning every single battle.

With the exception of a few last-minute additions, our team was mostly composed of the people who practice at UCONN. Obviously I put my buddies Alexa, Masha, Kai and Cory on because we all came up with the whole idea of the team together. From there we reached out to Mayerling first because they’ve also always been dedicated to helping out newer players and prioritizing fun.
The prep for the event was somewhat challenging. We had to make weapons as well as our craft entries. We were successful mostly because of how much help we got—Ashenmark helped make great weapons, my grandma taught us to sew and helped me make our tabards, Masha’s mom helped us with our banner, and Carol taught us to work with leather and helped me, Masha and Alexa make our team’s bracers and greaves. I’m super thankful for all their help and all the new skills I learned from them. I do wish we had gotten more than one team practice in, and that more people could’ve made it to the one I did hold.

For the actual event I think we succeeded in both our major goals. Though I wish more Oaken Guard members could’ve actually made it to the event, I saw all the ones that did having a great time participating. I definitely had a great time fighting with all my friends on our team, and I hope fighting against us was also fun for everybody else!

Editors Note:
I was lucky enough to compete against Nataliya in the Couples Tournament. She brought a great attitude, challenge and determination to the field.  I was glad to face off against her, and would happily do so again.

KCC: How To Make A Spell Counter

Kiira's Caster Creations: Spell Counter Beads

Have you ever felt a little overwhelmed keeping track of all your spells? Well, if you have, then this tutorial is just for you.

I must give credit to Lani Greyson, also known as Sir Gwen of Rhiassa, who brought these into use in the Realms! They are not only very practical for spell counting but also a great looking accessory.

Before you begin, you will need supplies; string, beads, and a clasp. You can choose any kinds of beads but I highly recommend Nylon string, due to its strength and ability to hold the beads in place.  When choosing beads and the thickness of string, note that the string needs to pass through the bead twice, so the string must be thin enough and the beads must have a big enough opening, but also not too large. As for the clasp, I recommend large jewelry clasps called lobster clasps, due to their resemblance to lobster claws.
Now that we have the supplies, let's begin!

You'll want to start with a very large piece of string, about six times the length of the beads you will be using. Fold the string in half.

Why I Want To Go: The Event Which Must Not Be Named V

For the fifth year in a row, you are invited to return as a students to the exotic Hogwarts School, in the far away land of "England".
Leave Valehaven behind and travel to a place where lessons, Dark Arts, dark marks, yummy munchies, and snake faces villains await.  The day is sure to be filled with important lessons, punctuated by challenges that ensure you have been paying attention.  The night will be filled with....menace, mischief and magic!
And, possibly, my favorite!  Mythical beasts!

10 More Questions Interview with Cory Roy (Asharn Starchaser)

Queen Asharn - Photo courtesy of Jesse Gifford

1) What achievement either in or out of character are you most proud of?
I feel the achievement I’m most proud of was helping run a Queen of Hearts team. We went into the event wanting to have fun and even though we lost drastically we still had a wonderful time. I hope to help run a team again in the future, maybe not as Queen though.

2) Are you a fighter or a caster? Have you always been? How did you choose?
I am a caster and for most of my realms carrier I have been one. I have had times where I tried to be a fighter but medical issues have gotten in my way so I tend to stay caster. But, honestly, even if i was able to fight more I would still choose to be a caster it is what I'm good at and I enjoy running around throwing lightning bolts.

3) Have you ever owned an artifact, momento, or magic item that has meant a lot to you, and why?
I have a dragon egg that means a lot to me. I got it at Black and White 2014 and I hope to one day hatch it. It means a lot to me because my character had to work to get it it wasn't something just given to me and that to me makes it worth something.

4) What group of people do you spend the most time with and why?
I would say I spend the most time with my nation, Gau Dring. They have been some of the best friends I have ever had, in or out of character, they are there whenever I need them.

5) Who is your best friend in character and why?
I should probably say my husband Luke John but it would probably have to be Lako. For the past few years, he has been one of the people I can go to for anything and I can rely on him to try his best to help me out.

6) What event or moment had the greatest impact on you as a player?
As a player the moment that had the most impact on me was my first event. I was at the event Tournaments of the Blue Rose I believe 2009. I had no clue what was happening most of the time I barely had any practice with larping before then. Nighthawk and Kazmar spent a significant amount of time that event teaching me how to fight and how to play the game in general.

7) What event or moment had the greatest impact on your character?
The event that had the greatest impact on Asharn was Ashen Bounty 2015. I felt that event was a turning point for me. I was working with a lot of people on the quest and I felt like I was contributing a lot to what was getting done. Plus, it was one of the first events I got to quest with my lightning bolt.

8) What is your most embarrassing moment, either IC or OOC?
This is a tough question because I don't really have any moments that stand out to me as embarrassing. I find most of the time that I'm very comfortable with what goes on in the game and community the closest thing to embarrassing for me is public speaking so probably when I was helping with the intros at order of the list and I was not sure of what I was supposed to say and told to make stuff up on the fly.

9) What is the best piece of advice you'd give to other players?
My advice to other players is to go and talk to people. This game is a community and the people in it are wonderful and I have made friends here who I basically consider family now. Realms has shaped my life more than anything and it's all because of the people who play the game.

10 ) What is the most important thing you've learned through the game?
Hands down it would be Heal Limb. But besides spells it would be that you need to learn to think on your feet. More times than I can count I have gotten myself into situations in the realms that i never even thought would happen. Whether it's role playing and trying to think of what my character would say as opposed to how I would react or if we are on a quest and we have to figure out some random way to get passed some magic barrier and licking it seemed to work. That legitimately happened and I honestly didn't think it would work but it did.

Piper's Queen of Hearts (23) Bardic

PIPER'S LITTLE LIST

Based on "As Someday it May Happen" from Mikado, by Gilbert and Sullivan

(Piper:)
As some day it may happen that a victim must be found,
I've got a little list — I've got a little list
Of society offenders who might well be underground,
And who never would be missed — who never would be missed!
There's the rhino-hiding fighter who will never call his shots —
All casters who can't seem to fit Heal Limb into their slots —
And while we're on the subject of the healers we don't like —
Let's scratch off all the ones who try to raise you on a spike —
It's like “if they're impaled, your efforts should cease and desist” —
And I don't think you'd be missed — they'd none of 'em be missed!

(Chorus:)
He's got 'em on the list — he's got 'em on the list;
And they'll none of 'em be missed — they'll none of 'em be missed.

(Piper:)
There's the t-shirt tabard garber, and the others of his race,
And the combat sneakerist — I've got him on the list!
All people who hate role playing and shove it in your face,
They never would be missed — they never would be missed!
Then the idiot who praises, with enthusiastic tone,
All tournaments but this, and all past quest lines but his own;
The newbie from the Institute who looks like she might cry,
Who "once had studied fencing, and would rather like to try";
And all unarmored fighters on a night quest won't exist —
For I'll put them on the list — and they'll none of them be missed!

(Chorus:)
He's got her on the list — he's got her on the list;
And I don't think she'll be missed — I'm sure she'll not be missed!

(Piper:)
There's the super anal generals that like their charts and graphs,
And floor you with them flat — you know it's just for laughs.
All little tykes and nuisances that love to run around —
If I put them on the list, I'd end up underground!
At this time, our queen would like to make mention of her pet peeve:
All people who duct tape their greaves onto their legs.
______________________________
The task of filling in that blank I'd rather leave to you.
But it really doesn't matter whom you put upon the list,
For they'd none of 'em be missed — they'd none of 'em be missed!

(Chorus:)
You may put 'em on the list — you may put 'em on the list;
And they'll none of 'em be missed — they'll none of 'em be missed!

Monster Island, a History by James "Sir Tao" Murphy

Monster Island
By James Murphy

mysterious island by matty17art on DeviantArt

More than a couple of years ago, about the time Blackwood created the Necro-dragon “Fred” I started to have an idea of bringing together some of the best monster makers in the realms to make props for a quest event. I had conversations with a couple of them. A bit later I was helping Folkestone with the Shades plot and was introduced to the Shadow Titan.

So I stated to form an idea for an event. I had helped run the last Mythdranor and was a fan of that type of immersive event. Once the players entered Mythdranor they had fight and or think their way out, no stopping, no diner break, and no tents. Of course the Event Holders for those events swore (again) that they would never hold any more events like that (he he he).

Now as good as the prop makers I had in mind are, I knew I would need more then they could give, so I started asking just about everybody if I could borrow props. And wow, did the realms come through. I have more Dra…. Er, creatures then I know what to…. No, I know how I am using each and every one of them.

So I gathered some monster makers. I added the idea that the event will have 24 hour content. I asked to borrow a bunch of props. But, I needed a hook. Dagger had moved to Germany several years ago and was doing larps over there. He ended up in some sort of something and as fallout of that, “assassins” were sent over here to kill his king.  That was a couple of years ago, so this idea that the Realms would have to go take care of this thing became my McGuffin. Lets get the players on a boat, crash them on an island, and have them survive a continuous period while fighting monsters.

Now I have some incredible prop makers, some fantastic borrowed props, some fun encounters, and a type of event that does not happen very often.

This is going to be fantastic, stressful, sleep deprived, experience that will probably make me swear by Sunday that I will never hold this kind of event again. (Note: most of the past Eh’s are either helping me with this event or are playing it).

Hope you secured your spot on the boat and see you at boarding.

Why I Want To Go: Monster Island

So, lets see if I can get this right.  This weekend at Creathorne Farm, you get a chance to jump into a 24 hour live site, coming up against who knows what.  And its in a small questing enviroment?
What a rare opportunity this is!  With a very seasoned event holder at the helm, one has no idea what the challenges could be.  The team working on this weekend long event has decades of experience throwing challenges at players.
So pack smart, get yourself there plenty early  (Friday sounds pretty good) and prepare to embark on a strange, crazy journey.  And, good luck!
