Artist Profile- Angela Yang

What mediums do you work in? I’ve dabbled in many different mediums from black and white photography to oil painting to digital art. But I prefer working in color pencil, chalk pastel and acrylic. Have you had any formal art training? Yes I have! I’ve taken art classes both in the United States and China since I was 3 years old in a variety of media. In High school I went on to attend the New Haven Educational Center for the Arts, a secondary arts magnet school. I have also completed the AP Studio Art portfolio in my senior year of high school. Where do you find inspiration? My works are highly based in surrealism. I enjoy showing my audience a different view of the world, one that they might not be able to immediately recognize on their own. I believe art takes a central role in altering the perspective of it’s viewer. Just like the court jester, an artist has the unique ability to “mock” the world without fear of repercussion. Has your art been influenced by Realms? If so, how? Through many of my incredibly talented friends, I’m slowly learning how to work with chain mail to create jewelry. I was also interested in tabard design and garb in general. Currently I’m working on pencil sketches of Realms nations symbols using a more realistic style.
Where do you share your work? I occasionally snap a picture of my work in progress to post onto Facebook. However the majority of my art is on the walls of my house, much of it is undocumented. I recently started a Tumblr blog with some of my art.http://havesomeart.tumblr.com/ What project/projects that you've created have you been particularly proud of? My AP Art Concentration, AP Studio Art required a 12 piece concentration on one topic of the artist’s choice. I chose to express the idea of nature rebelling against humankind after years of human oppression. What projects do you hope to complete in the future? I’ve always wanted to work in larger media. As a studio artist I’ve always admired the liberating aspect of street art. I hope to work in larger media to make art that is physically larger than life so that it can better relay the messages that I wish to express. What other Realms artists work do you enjoy? I went to art school with Nataliya Kostenko and I’ve always admired her works. We took our senior drawing class together and I loved the unique perspective she brought to her work. I also love Carol Eddy’s work in portraiture, it’s simply gorgeous.

A Note From The View Staff-

I asked Angela to be a part of the Artist Profile series, after only seeing a few of her sketches via Facebook, primarily because I thought it would be a nice way to introduce a newer player and her interest to the community.

I didn't fully understand the AMAZINGNESS of her work. I don't think many others in game were aware either.

I'm VERY excited about this series as a whole (and there is still more to come!!). In over 6 years of working on the View, both print and online, there is nothing I've felt more privileged to have an opportunity to share, than these profiles, that have left me personally in awe of the depth and breadth of talent in our community. .

I hope you are enjoying it as well. ~ Angela Gray

Why I Want To Go- Tournaments of the Void 5

Tournaments of the Void 5
August 2, 2014 (Saturday 12pm) - August 2, 2014 (Saturday 8pm)
Event Type:Tournaments

This has been a good series of tournaments. Each year it gets better and better. While there will be Order of the List points available for competitors, there are also Void points which is an alternate fighting ranking system. This year promises something for those no interested in fighting with a search and find challenge. Winners in this challenge will gain points toward the raffle to be held at the end of the day (along with doing well in the other tournaments). A couple of interesting notes for the tournaments is that armor does not need to worn to count in tournaments and characters will be allowed to safely break weapons restrictions to enter the combat tournaments.
Personally, I am intrigued by the "build-your-own-burrito" bar!

10 Questions - Hillary "Tara" Fotino

Hillary "Tara" Fotino

How long have you been playing?
I've been playing since the Black and White of '07.

How has the game changed since you've been playing?
While I don't know if its true, it feels like there are a lot more tournaments and a lot less quests happening these days. It does feel like a lot of the major plots that were big when I first started either wrapped up or disappeared in the last year or so. I like the shift to improving the fighter culture of the game, though sometimes it feels that it comes at the cost of people's fun and the cost of roleplaying.

Who have you learned the most from?
I feel like I've learned from everyone. As far as the most goes, that has to go to three people who through the course of their actions and words shaped not only Tara the character but Hillary the player, pushed me to improve in real life as well as game life and I can guarantee without them that I would not be the person that I am now. So, many thanks to Dave Martin, Janna Oakfellow-Pushee and Alex Newbold. They taught me everything from how to be a better fighter all the way to how to look someone in the eyes.

What was your best moment IC?
That depends on what you mean by 'best'. There are two moments from the same event that are full of a lot of emotion for me.

The first is probably the one time I really felt epic as a fighter. I want to say it was the second Saturday of the final push into Bedlam, but I'll be honest, those weekends blur together for me in a way I would never have believed possible so it might have been the first one. It was late, it was dark and people were starting to slow down. You could feel the urge to just hole up in the tavern and not move. We knew which way we needed to go to find the next piece we needed but no one was moving. So, I decided it was time to go. I had a special shield which had been made for the event which glowed and would let me plant my feet and gain invulnerability for the next 30 seconds. So I walked out of the tavern with Cuchullain and Pheonix Rose, but no one else followed us. We got to the head of the trail we needed to go down and I planted my feet when we got attacked. I don't think 30 seconds has ever last so long before. The count finished and I finally started taking damage. I was convinced I was about to go down when someone healed one of my legs. The rest of the questing party had arrived just in time.

The second was definitely the final Sunday during the last court of the True Court of Fae. To preface this, my first event was the coronation of Cuchullain and Nimbus and that has always been a very defining moment to Tara. By this point in the Bedlam War, there were rumors going around that the Fae were going to pull out after we defeated Mad Tom. We had all been talking about it on the side. The plane of Fae was so damaged, what would happen? I knew two things to be true: Tara would never leave the mortal realms and her responsibilities there but she would also never be a squire in a capacity where she could not actually serve her knight. I had spent more than a while bracing myself for the very real possibility of turning in my squire belt. Instead, I found myself being knighted and explicitly told to stay behind. That moment has gone on the very, very short list of times I have honestly cried real honest to goodness tears at an event.

What was your best moment as a NPC/EH/Player?
Hands down, the best moment has to be during the storyteller's quest that Becky and I ran some time back where we actually hung a player. We had a tree climber's rig to keep him safe and hung the noose loosely in the tree so if something failed, the noose would just fall. But it was convincing enough that went the rest of the players found him, they were legitimately shocked and confused.

What would you like to see changed or developed more in game?
I would really love to see more garb, more role-playing and less OOC talk during events. I know people want to catch up, but at least do it off to the side. I know there have been individual pushes, but I feel like it will take a real push from across the board before anything changes.

What advice would you give new players?
Try everything! No seriously. Help in the kitchen, serve, NPC (but wait a while on that one*), fight, learn spells, fight some more. Ask people to teach you things. Anything. Make armor, sing, try rituals. Help people, stay to clean up, make friends. Run shops, do something in-character stupid, get in trouble. I mean it, try everything. And don't be afraid to make mistakes, they usually end in fun.
* But wait a while before you NPC. One of the things I've been discovering is that once you've seen behind the curtain, its hard to go back. Once you've been the goblin, its hard to see the goblins and not your friends in hockey masks. If someone has a solution to that, I would love it.

What do you love most about the game?
I love newbies. I love watching the wide eyed joy that people come in with. That sense of 'oh my god, its all really real' and 'this is what I didn't know I need'. So many of the people I've seen come into the game come for the roleplaying, stay for the community and really grow. I love being part of that and helping to shape who they become.

Who would you like to see the next interview be with?
I'm not sure. Surprises are fun though! Someone no one would expect.

Artist Profile- Amanda "Phoenix Rose" Sieracki

What mediums do you work in? I tend to favor digital art, but I also do doodles with just good old ball-point pen and whatever paper is on hand.
Have you had any formal art training?
None what-so-ever! Everything I've learned is from artists I admire, and asking them for pointers, or finding tutorials. Never be afraid to ask for help, or look up references and tutorials!
Where do you find inspiration? Everywhere. Sometimes it'll be a prompt that blossoms into an idea in my head, sometimes it'll be seeing someone else's work and wondering if I can do something similar. Sometimes just a handful of colors chosen at random will give me an idea. Character concept work for movies or games can be really interesting, too, and help with that little nudge.
Has your art been influenced by Realms? If so, how? It has, as I like doodling Phee from time to time, and sometimes the people she interacts with. It's helped me try to learn how to draw different weapons, armor, clothing styles and patterns, and body-shapes. It's also made me think more about heraldry in other projects. They're all things I'm working on doing better, but it helped kick-start the process.
Where do you share your work? My deviantart page for more finished things, or my tumblr account for sketches are the most common places I post things. My tumblr's mostly full of stories or other things, so that's not the best place to check.
What project/projects that you've created have you been particularly proud of? Anything that requires me to break out of my comfort zones. Backgrounds, concepts I'm not incredibly familiar with, or experimenting with lighting.
What projects do you hope to complete in the future? Besides the huge amount of art needed for all the future Nightshade Academy products we have lined up (let me tell you, there's a lot), I want to try illustrating a novel I've been working on for a few years.
What other Realms artists work do you enjoy? Keith "Tark" Tatarczuk, Will "Harlest" Bolton, Zach "Rubis" Senchuck (can be read here) and Janna "Iawen" Oakfellow-Pushee (can be read here) come to mind.

Why I Want To Go- The Event Which Must Not Be Named III

The Event Which Must Not Be Named III
July 25, 2014 (Friday 6pm) - July 27, 2014 (Sunday 6pm)
Event Type:Questing

This event has shown a consistent high level of prop making and costuming. Whether or not you are a fan of the Harry Potter stories, these are still good, solid Realms events. The plotting tends to be well thought out with plenty of room for role-playing, good fights and the opportunity to make personal choices for your character. One thing they do really well is create an immersive atmosphere where you can feel like you are somewhere else, in another world of intricate design. You can't go wrong by going to this event.

Artist Profile- Carol Eddy

What mediums do you work in?

95% of my work is straight up, good ol' fashioned #2 pencil on paper. Sometimes I get fancy and work in marker, colored pencil, watercolor pencil, pastel, or charcoal. One in a blue moon, I'll paint. (Acrylic on wood... for heraldry purposes!) Almost everything I do is a portrait. I find faces just plain
*fascinating*.

Have you had any formal art training?

You mean, other than mandatory “art” in grade school? When I was very young, I used to spend an
hour a week at the house of an artist/friend of the family. You would bring your sketchbook – all other art materials provided – and work on whatever piece of work you were inspired to do. Reference images abounded, and through the hour as you worked quietly, occasionally the artist would stop by and offer a suggestion or two. It was less 'art lessons' and more... guided exploration, I suppose. My last class was in 8th grade – which is also, interestingly, the place I first met Sheri (Koshka).

Where do you find inspiration?

Figure skating, live theater, - especially musical theater! I have a whole series of Les Mis portraits. Also the occasional film, and historical/inspirational people of note. Usually the muse hits me like lightning out of the blue and I think, “I simply must draw him/her/that!”

Has your art been influenced by Realms?

Not extensively... yet. I do have a portrait I drew of Panther that I'm rather fond of, and a neat one of Ranger that includes his name in elven, plus and a whole folder of (stolen) pictures of Realmsies I may or may not one day get around to trying my hand at. I love the idea of Realms character portraits.

Approach me about this and give me an excuse...

Where do you share your work?

Everything I do ends up on facebook. The rest – it depends what it is of. I try to share each kind of work with its own fandom... so you'll find my figure skating stuff on those boards, my musicals work in the broadway community, etc.

What project/projects that you've created have you been particularly proud of?

My Lincoln portrait was the first one that really drove home to me that I might actually be *good* at this. That was a surprise, and I still treasure that picture a great deal. I'm also very proud of a charcoal sketch (not my usual medium) of my favorite musical theater actor, Drew Sarich, from his time in Jesus Christ Superstar. I had the chance to meet him at the stage door (he is currently playing Rocky in Hamburg, Germany) and get that particular portrait signed. His reaction? Priceless...!

As with any artist it is very difficult to narrow everything down to just a piece or two. But every time I draw someone and share it, and my friends know and recognize who it is and squee over it a little bit – well, that's worth it. I'm especially happy when I pick someone a little more unknown – theater actors really fall into this category – or when a friend or family member commissions me to do a portrait of a loved one. Those are one-of-a-kind and have very special meaning for me.

What projects do you hope to complete in the future?

I have yet to produce a portrait of Maksim Chmerkovskiy that I am happy with. (Yes, shut up.) I have a great Thor/Loki pair, and adding the rest of the Avengers would make for an awesome wall lineup. I also would not at all mind tackling Norm Lewis as the Phantom...

This is the advantage of portraits, I suppose; no limit to the fascinating faces to draw!

What other Realms artist's work do you enjoy?

Honestly, aside from what is posted on the View, I don't get the chance to see the work of many Realms artists. I wish there was some way to incorporate the 'work done over the year' into a showcase or gallery of some sort at a winter feast... I would love to be able to browse through the work of other Realms artists and talk mediums and inspiration. It just doesn't feel like there is a good forum for that right now in the game.

Why I Want To Go- Grimloch Questing 2014

Grimloch Questing 2014
July 18, 2014 (Friday 7pm) - July 20, 2014 (Sunday 4pm)
Event Type: Questing

This series of questing events has been a highlight of the eventing season for a few years now. The event staff always tries to allow the players free rein to make their own decisions as to what they want to do. If you go to this event you can expect to chart where the quest goes. You can also expect to be pushed hard. This event sees innovative encounters, interesting monsters and a good time!

Question of the Week - 153

What is your favorite style of NPCing (grunt fighter, caster, role-playing, other)?

Friday, July 11, 2014

10 Questions - David "Oliver" Martin

David "Oliver" Martin

How long have you been playing?
Almost 17 years.

And while I’ve always found this cartoon that was in the printed view one time when I started showing the pictorial evolution of a player from “newbie” to “one year wonder” to “veteran” to “oldbie”…this past weekend gave me new appreciation for the final picture showing the oldbie standing there asking “what’s going on”.  I need to thank Jeremy/Drake (sp?) for helping bring me up to speed on the drive down.

How has the game changed since you've been playing?
Solving  a quest/plot now seems to require divinatory magic.  This is partially due to players being lazy and thinking “this spell will get me the answer” and partially due to EHing style evolving to include more information that needs such magics to get it…or to direct the quest.

Also, I feel the game has segregated out a lot.  There was always a divide between “fighters” and “spell casters”, but I feel this has grown to the point where fighters mostly just show up to tournaments and wars, while the spell casters (and fighters bring spell caster alts) go questing.  I keep hearing about this quest or that quest where “we had 2 fighters…and 30 dagger jocks”  (see “what I’d like to see changed” below)

Who have you learned the most from?
Kathy Horn…now Kathy Fae.  No matter how much I might try and contribute, help, or whatever…no matter how frustrated or intense I might get…all I have to do is look over at her and this GAME all comes back in to focus.  She has always shown me how to have fun, how to not sweat even the big stuff, and has forever been my roll model to aspire to in just about all things Realms related.  Kathy, you are awesome!

What was your best moment IC?
The final Rights of War (RoW) event, where I as Owen/Cuchulain led the gathered forces of the Realms to throw down the usurper Oberon from the Fae thrown.  The event series had many high and low points for me.  It was a huge emotional rollercoaster, but it ended on the highest point of my career.  After all was done and the smoke was clearing it was seen the Nymbus (she who would be Queen) had been struck down in the fight, giving her last breath denying Sloan Harkon.

It left all in shock and Cuchulain broken.  To have come so far, to succeed, and yet have failed.  I sat with her cradled in my arms crying in grief while those closest to Cuchulain kept people back like the police might at a disaster scene.  Without calling it a “court”, I held an impromptu court as king, speaking with individuals about what needed doing while trying to figure out what I myself would do.  Eventually Cuchulain, now king in full again, was able to pull from all the Fae lands around him the life needed to restor Nymbus.  We then sat for long minutes in the dark and quiet, stunned as to all that had been done, while people would occasionally be lead up to speak with us together.  It was the closes I’ve ever come to truly living in the moment, the world, of our game.

Afterwords, I got so many compliments on my roleplaying.  How convincing I was and how much I drew others into the moment.  Everything had been like the ending of a movie, and they thanked me for making it so.  I will truly never forget that night.

What was your best moment as a NPC/EH/Player?
Two different points, both knightings:

1. My single proudest moment was at the end of the Fae Plot, when all was said and done, and the last thank yous given out.  I called my squire Tara Harkon forward and took the moment to tell all present of the deeds I’d seen her down, how she had grown over time, and the person I’d been privleaged to watch her grown into.  I had taken a step back from her training recently to see how she’d do on her own.  Would she stand tall, stumble, or fall.  There were some stumbles but she picked herself up and became all the better for it.  As Cuchulain, she is my greatest pride.  I knighted her and charged her with the safe keepings of the lands of Fae now that I was moving on.

2. However, I think the single best knighting I have ever been to or done was the knighting of Sir BrightHammer.  It was when Cuchulain was still a PC “Owen” and I was leading a Realms wide war effort to re-take Fae from the “false King” Oberon.

BrightHammer had always been a great asset and friend to Owen in this and I had named him one of my lieutenants; however, he had decided to throw his lot in with Robin the Duke of Monstrosity who was leader of a third faction in the war.  I called him out on this in the middle of court at a Feast of Chimeron and took back the badge I’d given him as a lieutenant.  Bud (who played BrightHammer) was so dumbstruck with shock/anger/frustration he couldn’t say anything….which was good in that it prevented him from interrupting when I then pulled out a knightly belt of our order and offered it to him in replacement.

Meanwhile, as this happened, the other Knights who of course knew what was going on had quietly come up from behind to be ready to welcome him into the Order.  To see the look on his face as his emotions did a complete 180…transitioned from shock of anger…all the way to stunned with joy…priceless.

What would you like to see changed or developed more in game?
Quest events better encouraging/embracing fighter types.  Simply having a bunch of fights the players have to push through is not “content for fighters”, at least not for all of them.  I can do that at fight practice and have more doing so.  Me personally at an event I find a lot of those to be draining and unfulfilling.  The term becomes “herding cats”.  A certain amount of resentment builds because other people are all figuring out “stuff” while we have to hold off or push through seemingly endless waves of bad guys.

I don’t have a good solution for this.  If I did, I’d try to preach it.  While event holding we’ve tried a variety of things to correct this.  Trying to give better meaning and objectives to fights, doing more fights with limited numbers of NPCs so you could feel like progress is being made, varying up what sorts of fights you create, but this still is just “got hit stuff”.  So we also tried out different ways of solving puzzles that anyone could do, try to gear some challenges towards those of a marshal/athletic bent, and also pulling back on the need for defending the party while people work on something.

What advice would you give new players?
Pack an extra pair of socks (and shoes) and leave them in the car when going to outdoor events, especially over night events.  If it rains, or the EHs decided to have you go tromping through lake, the drive home afterwards will be so much nicer if you have dry feet.

What do you love most about the game?
The ability to just show up to an event or practice and just play.
You don’t need a lot of customized gear to be safe or event just participate.  Chances are that someone will be able to loan you a weapon or have a spare tunic when you get there.  And in general the people of our game are helpful with this sort of thing that even if THEY don’t have X or Y, they’ll help you find someone who does.

Who would you like to see the next interview be with?
Both Angela Wood (Monique) and Pat Bobell (Saka) are graduating this May.  On one hand some might say it’s only been 4 years; however, I’d love to hear what their take on how the game is reaching the new leaders now graduating, what thoughts they have, and what they’d like to see.  I’ve seen them each grow during their time at WPI.

Aside from that, get Katy Fae (her interview can be read here) or Jarrod Marshal talking….

Anything else you'd like to take the opportunity to put into print?
Firstly, thank YOU for doing this...

*pulls soap box out*
This game runs and exists on the service of others not just the $$ you pay for admission.  If you enjoy this game, make the time to give back to it.  While a good start is offering a friend who is throwing an event a hand.  That is only the start.  We are a community; others who you know less also need that sort of help.  I met several more people I now call “friend” by offering to help at their event, or tagging along with someone else I knew to go NPC for a quest that was short staffed.  It is through this sort of service to the game that I connected with the realms as a whole.  And in the end, when I asked for help…they came to me.

Lastly, finally time for crotchety old man to rear his head…
I’d love to have a year where come EHC time people as a whole to decide that we don’t need to put a thousand updates or “improvements” into the spell system.  Yes, clearly you are smart and found a problem that “needs” fixing or a “better” way to do things….but on this one year stop and think for a moment.  Did the Realms function last year?  Would this tweak actually fix a reoccurring problem, or would it just make a nuance cleaner, or you to feel empowered?  More and more I feel that people write proposals for the Omnibus, so they can be the one to have “fixed” something.  But to me, the reality is that the daunting number of proposals that get filed each year cause us to spend less and less time weighing each one.

Artist Profile- Zach "Rubis" Senchuk

What mediums do you work in?

I dabble in a little of everything: Sculpture, Drawing, Painting, Digital Mediums, Print Making, Photography.
Have you had any formal art training?
I was extremely involved in my high schools excellent art program including Honors levels 1-4 and an independent study dedicated to producing art. I have also completed a year of college majoring in Fine Visual Arts.
Where do you find inspiration?
The things I've developed best working towards becoming an artist is my ability to draw inspiration from pretty much everything I see. I see a lot of beauty in the world and it makes me eager to create.
Has your art been influenced by Realms? If so, how?
I have taken a little inspiration from Realms, mostly in a small photography series I have going on.
Where do you share your work?
Some of my work can be found on http://www.redbubble.com/people/zachsenchuk other than that I keep most of my work private.
What project/projects that you've created have you been particularly proud of?
In high school I was part of a very small group of artists who were commissioned to do various large installation murals around town and in the school. I wish I had pictures, the experience was amazing.
What projects do you hope to complete in the future?
I would love to get back into my Orange Cart Series and push that further, I have worked on it for 3 years now and It has seen many transformations, I think it can stand to see a few more. I'm currently working on a triptych for a toddlers room revolving around the orange carts and a color scheme provided by the customer.
What other Realms artists work do you enjoy?
I have a huge appreciation for the photographers that capture the fun we have playing the game.

Just a reminder that Bethany "Freesia" Tozier is skating with New Hampshire Roller Derby as "Irate Pirate" for her 6th year.  Consider checking out a game and cheering her on. They are a lot of fun.  For more information visit http://www.nhrollerderby.com/

Welcome back to Michel "Jace" Venne.  He has been doing a direct exchange from UMass Amherst to the University of Copenhagen since February.  During that time he took three classes, the main one was a Fieldwork Methods and Analysis class.  It involved a group of five students volunteering and studying at a fieldwork site. Michel's group studied the organization Trampoline House a non-profit, self-organized, user-driven culture house, where asylum seekers, Danish citizens, and anyone else can meet, share experiences, and learn from each other on equal terms.
