I Can't Even... stay in shape

I Can't Even …
 by Sara "Zarine" Jessop
… Stay in OOTL Shape

Like all of you, I was shocked when I read the announcement that Order of the List would be on hiatus this year. (For the under-educated, hiatus means 'taking a break'). Many of the martial persuasion are understandably disappointed. Their usual motivation for practicing and improving themselves is temporarily (hopefully) halted. Yet this doesn't mean that you should all let yourselves go and sit around gorging yourselves on chips and skipping practice sessions while you lament about how this was 'your year' and how you would have 'won it 'all if only the tournament had happened.

Just because there will be no Order of the List this year doesn't mean that there are not other incentives to keep up with your skills. There are many reasons to remain in fighting shape throughout the next year. And, dear reader, when I say 'stay in shape' I mean for those who have already acquired an attractive shape. Some of you plebs still need to lose that rounded shape that you've so carefully cultivated with too much Blackwood Meatloaf . Fortunately you now have an extra year to get into fighting shape and develop the skills necessary to get into the top sixteen when the competition returns.

Message in a Bottle

To anyone who is interested,

When Snake Cult required help when their nation’ members’ souls were taken during their festival, there was a tumbleweed(?) that contained a message in a bottle. With the help of Vesper and Lako, we were able to secure it. The message, stained in blood, read “SOS” and contained the coordinates 43.5174, -65.5717. Recently, at Feast of Creathorne, Toah and I casted a lot of seer magic at it. Here’s what was discovered:

  • The sender is dead
  • It is not accessible by foot
  • It is North, Northeast relative to Creathorne
  • It is not all the way across the ocean

It’s important to know that at this point into our investigation Toah heard a sea shanty as I was hearing shrieking. This would eventually lead to my right ear bleeding a bit

  • Someone knows we are trying to find them, they are in turn trying to find us, they know that we know someone that was what they want
  • (Using three precognitions at once, which should not be repeated) Toah saw an ocean during a sunset. After the sunset and bright flash appeared and he began to be covered in water. He also began to drown and what we would later learn was a siren’s voice whispered to him to and over the dark pirate/ pirate dressed in black.
  • He snapped out of his precognitions actually drowning to which I proceeded to push on his abdomen until he coughed the water up. However he only seemed to stop after a bright flash from his eyes.

I asked if he was okay to use his vision after that happened, he said he was fine.

  • Toah’s vision (which stopped both the Shanty and the shrieking) earned us a small chat with someone(?)
  • The dark pirate is Axel, who is the key for the Siren Queen to get her husband back.
  • Grebinar is the key for her Husband's insanity.
  • Her husband used to be the King of the Bronze Kingdom, which is approximately where the coordinates would lead us.
  • The king was cruel and when a powerful sword was constructed for him, he killed the maker(s?), Medhel an Gwyns.
  • The person we were talking to had hidden this sword

There is stuff we do not know still, such as where is this sword and who we were talking to, but Toah has exhausted his seer magic and I did not wish to push further with my own magics, as a lot of the question that were left were open-ended. However, we could go off of the current information, and head north when it is warmer, as the ice in the north may prevent us from going to where we have to. If the are more questions out there, feel free to find me at a Feast/Quest/Tournament and ask.

The Event-Holder's Council by Diana "Kiira" LaPierre

It's a world of mystery, privilege, and dispute. A battleground of ideas and good intentions, with some selfishness strewn in: The Event Holders Council. The fate of the game and its players tied to this single day of debate and discussion.

The environment can be described as combative by some and entertaining by others. Major things happen there! In recent years, there have been massive changes that were put into effect; some even bypass the EGC altogether.

Will weapons construction change? Will there be no cost buy downs? Will that crucial grammar mistake be fixed, or will it be left up to the Omnibus Editorial Committee? These questions and more will be answered on Saturday.

There are many game changing proposals this year that could affect every player in the game. I know you may not be an event holder, but there are still ways to positively impact change in the game. You can talk to your friends who are EHs and give them pros and cons of the proposals up for discussion. You can let the Player's Representative that will be going to the EHC know your feelings about the proposals. If you did not make it to the Event Goers Council, you should let your voice be heard.

Over my decade of attending the EHC, things have vastly changed. The politics of the game are different. There are less "voting blocks", where people are coerced into voting the same as friends. Parents vote differently than their children, wives vote opposite of their husbands. But some things have not changed. The Event Holders can still be the same kind of cruel, heartless Masters of Fate that we come to realize them to be. Let us not forget the oxymoron of Heal Undead Limb and the more recent battle with Heartiness(or is it Hardiness?).

But in all seriousness, you may find yourself scratching your head, thinking Why didn't that proposal pass?! It would have been amazing! Event Holders have a different perspective on the game. They put in time, energy, and money to create the world we play in. If there is something they voted against, there may be a logical reason, and just ask someone who attended. If you're still not okay with the results, don't blame me. I am not attending. #leavingforFlorida #happiestplaceonearth #sorrynotsorry #throwaneventnextyear

I Can't Even...

… Seasonal Fashion - Winter

While it may have been pretty warm these last couple of days, don't let the weather fool you; it's still winter. And according to my sources, namely a nefarious rodent whose shadow never seems to take a vacation, winter is going to hang around for another month or so. It's come to my attention via various photographs from this past weekends gathering in Creathorne that people have already jumped ahead into spring fashion. This will not do.

Chartreuse has been deemed the “spring color” by the Order of the Peacock. Now, it's been a bit of a controversial decision, but the decision was made none the less. The first day of spring is March twentieth. I can't imagine why anyone would ever wear this color for any other reason than to try and impress the Order, so please refrain from wearing it until then. If you would like to know the exact date that you can then deposit all of your chartreuse clothing directly into the trash, the first day of summer is June twenty-first. (Just kidding, please donate your ugly items to those less fortunate).

Behind the Blue by Ethan "Jean-Baptiste" Goldman

[Editor's Note: this series is aimed at providing backstory on different in-house and magical items found within the Realms. Got a nifty one that you want to share? Let us know!]

The Boon of Hashinabe Ur

Years ago, where elves took a knee to their Neden masters, the weight of servitude enraged the slaves in the same way the living dead chock at the leash today. However unlike the zombie burdened by rotting bodies and fading minds, the drow were as cunning as they were cruel, they knew the power of gems and stolen a tree from neden’s fabled apple orchard, using necromancy to drain the tree until its bark was reduced to pure jet. Chipping away at this stone they wrought its pieces in pyrite, and hid the resulting jewelry and its many sister pieces as they slaved away. For as the drow gods failed them they must make one new.

The ritual of fell gods was simple, if painful, for each drow that died cruelly under Neden’s yoke, for each drop of blood spilled onto the profane instruments that each drow hid, the boons grew in power, and from the budding sentience of each artifact the makings of a hive god stirred, a being of enough power to destroy the kingdom that had enslaved them, to shatter their idols and tarnish their treasure till they were reduced to mere legacy.

Then Durin’s Plate was stolen and the Realms finished the Drow’s job before the elves could even start, and with Neden’s death the drows vanished, their planes forgotten and the jewelry rusted and its magic waned. The god withered before being born.

Till the zombies revolted, and undead blood was spilled onto jet.

As each scalp is destroyed Hashinabe grows more aware of the world, ever closer to existence, and as it does it blesses those that hold the jewelry that gives it form and power, these unhallowed tokens of the hive gods might and blessing. And from these Boons of Hashinabe Ur the false god may see its purpose filled once more.

Till then, it offers its pseudo divine aid to all who ask it, all it needs is scalps to weave its workings with.

Why I Want to Go: Feast of Creathorne 2017

by Diana "Kiira" LaPierre

The cold of the winter months provides us plenty of time to gather around the feast hall. This weekend is no exception. Saturday will be the annual Feast of Creathorne. Sir Shean had invited us into his feast hall for what is sure to be a delightful day of delicacies and diverse distractions.

Feast of Creathorne offers an experienced kitchen staff and a buffet style eating experience. Their food is fresh and they even offer rare delicacies of game stew and more. There will be food for even the most snobby(or fussy) of tastebuds.

While you are not busy satisfying your stomachs, there is a myriad of other activities to participate in. There will be shops set up selling their goods to anyone with the gold or green to purchase it. Then you can partake of the quests that are sure to pop up in between courses.

If you are dressed too fancily to murder things and get blood all over your nice clothes, you could always try your hand at a hand of poker or blackjack. The Creathorne Casino will be there to take your money. Or maybe your a high stakes kind of player, in which there will be a Gamblers Guild Stacked Deck tournament.

Tournaments will also be available in the form of combat and bardics. Glory could be yours at the right end of a sword or guitar. Use this time to build and test your skill against worthy opponents. Perhaps you will even come home with a nice certificate to prove your worth.

I want to go to Feast of Creathorne because it provides entertainment in so many forms year after year! I will be bursting at the seems from food and fun!

Hope to see you there!

Did somebody say rabbit stew?

I Can't Even...

I Can't Even...

… Oversharing

Recently I have become aware that people clearly do not get any social training as children. This is no excuse, however, for becoming uncouth adults. I myself was raised by pirates. Somehow even they managed to instill basic manners in me such as saying please and thank you, but much of the rest I had to learn on my own. Some through some rather unfortunate trial and error in my younger years, some through careful observation of others, a good amount of reading about the topic, and of course a good healthy dose of common sense.

You all seem to have the trial and error method down, though whether or not you are learning anything from it is beyond my abilities to comprehend. More and more denizens of the Realms have upped their social game so there are more and more people for you to observe and emulate. We should all strive to provide a good example for those wishing to better their social skills.  Common sense is hard to come by, despite it's name. It's something I often prescribe but cannot provide. But you all seem to have far better reading comprehension than I had initially imagined, so perhaps between my shining example and this article I can guide you in the right direction.

Ten More Questions with Tucker "Temorse" Noyes

1) What achievement either in or out of character are you most proud of?
I think for both of these by far is the success I’ve shared with my nation. There are a lot of small goals from throwing a Queen of Hearts team, to event holding, to questing together that we’ve accomplished together that really add up to the most gratification and pride that I personally have towards the game. I’ve spent about half of my Realms career as a part of my nation, and while I had a lot of personal goals I’ve accomplished, the starting a nation, bringing in new people and watching them succeed has been by far the most rewarding for me.

2) Are you a fighter or a caster? Have you always been? How did you choose?
When I started out I spent a majority of the game as a one path, which had a lot to do with my access to armor. I played a rogue for a long time, 2003-2009, before switching to a fighter full time. I really enjoyed the freedom that came with being a rogue, and it suited my playstyle given the group I was with at the time, but eventually I became more interested in competitive combat and have, for the most part stayed a fighter since. Recently there are times I’ve wanted to go back to being a one path, but questing as a fighter seems to offer a lot more potential for my playstyle. I do moonlight as a three path, Tychus, on occasion to mix things up, but I think being a fighter will always be near and dear to my heart.

3) Have you ever owned an artifact, memento, or magic item that has meant a lot to you, and why?
I’ve been lucky enough to receive a couple magic items in my time questing, however I’ve never grown overly attached to any. I’ve kept a slew of small mementos from various events over the years, however there are two that stand out the most in my mind. The first one was a coin I received from my very first event, it was one of the cursed coins from the Pirates of the Caribbean slide from Slippery When Wet. There isn’t anything special about it specifically, except that it marked the beginning of my journey in the Realms.

The second item is, for lack of a better term, the “hearthstone” that we were given on the quest to save Bouquet, Now to Scape the Serpent's Tongue. The event itself was one of the most fun, epic events I have had the privilege to attend and while the prop itself is just a run of the day marble, it represents to me the first time my character really became involved with a plot.

4) What group of people do you spend the most time with and why?
When I started playing the game I came in with a large group of younger players, and over the years many of them stopped playing. For awhile after that I spent a lot of time hanging out with a variety of groups and had the honor of getting to know a lot of different people from a lot of different groups. While I still get to spend some time with all those different people, currently I spend most of the time with my nation, in and out of game, as they are like family to me. I still enjoy seeing everyone else when I can, however the bond from building up a nation that I’ve made with my friends in Ashenmark for the past six years has been a truly unique and humbling experience.

5) Who is your best friend in character and why?
Stripes and Grot are probably my characters closest friends, they go way back and neither are really around enough any more for me to be upset with, which helps.

6) What event or moment had the greatest impact on your character?

This would be (I want to say it was a Feast of Chimeron) the event Temorse had died in Bedlam, and subsequently sort of becoming a bad guy for a time. There are few things as character shaping as facing permanant death, especially when you get to survive it by the efforts of so many of your friends.

7) What event or moment had the greatest impact on you as a player?
I think the weeks following losing Temorse to Bedlam were the most impactful to me as a player, more so than anything else. The amount of support I received from the community, both the event staff and the players involved in the rescue. It was a very unique experience that I was able to have, with an uncertain outcome. I really appreciate, all around, how everything played out.

8)  What is your most embarrassing moment, either IC or OOC?

There have been many, many embarrassing moments throughout my Realms career for sure. The most memorable one was the great Ashenmark pike incident at North South War when we realized we had not accounted for the thrusting tips and all the pikes were 2” longer than intended, requiring use to saw two inches off the handles on the field.

9) What is the best piece of advice you'd give to other players?
Try all aspects of the game. For me, I was never big on role playing or the crafting side of the game, however I gained new appreciation for those things them more I was willing to try them. Sometimes it’s awkward to start, or you end up making really crappy gear or feeling pretty foolish trying new things in combat, but you build on that. You may even find that you really enjoy some aspects of the game that you never thought you would. It took me nearly 4 years of playing to really get into competitive fighting and it to this day is still one of my favorite aspects of the game.

10) What is the most important thing you've learned through the game?
I think really the power and an importance of a strong community. Over the years I’ve seen the community come together for great causes and charities. The length so many people in this community have gone to in order to give back is really astonishing. In time and money alone for fundraisers this community has given back more than I would have ever expected, and the support that people have shown individuals in times of need has always blown me away. It is certainly comforting to know that your are apart of a group like this as well as a big responsibility to help continue on that conduct of good will.

BONUS QUESTION #1: Who would you like to see the next interview be with?

Angela Gray/Phoenix

BONUS QUESTION #2: Anything else you'd like to take the opportunity to put into print?

Just a big thank you to the View Staff for all their hard work and willingness to try new things!

The Wrath of Irvin Ruggles, Part 1 by Renee "Mouse" Booke

Some people said that Ashryn Reymaris was a public menace. Some believed she was a sophisticated soul with a penchant for mischief. Many more people were left asking the important question: “Who the hell is Ashryn Reymaris?” No matter what the opinion, everyone was starting to talk about her in Waterford, the westernmost province of the Kingdom of Vamhadras.

“I want this Elf’s head on a pike!” Irvin screamed, beating his fist against the table. His face was puffy already, but the intensity of his rage was also putting him on the cusp of turning purple. “No one makes a fool of Irvin Ruggles!”

A nervous servant wiped at Irvin’s brow, dabbing at the heavy layer of sweat that had made itself a permanent fixture upon his face. Irvin was an ugly man, and it took everything the servant had not to cringe. Many prominent pustules freckled his wrinkly skin, and they threatened to burst with every fit of rage. Adding to the look was the spit that sprayed out of his mouth and started to gather in his beard. Little droplets of saliva and drool hung off of his lips and coarse hair. To complete the foul trifecta that was every fashionista’s worst nightmare, there looked to be some kind of rash on his neck just under the left earlobe.

Across the table, a lankier fellow held up his hands in calming reassurance. “Of course, Master. Of course we’ll get the Elf’s head for you.” He averted his eyes, starting to roll up the sleeves of his oversized robes. They were red silk on the outside, and lined in gold to match the floral embroidery on the trim. “You mentioned something about the treasury…” His voice trailed off, and he haltingly looked back up.

“There is no treasury, Benjamin you dolt! That is what I’ve been trying to tell you! This-this Reymaris She-Elf took it all,” Irvin wailed. The frustration in his voice was palpable from his stuttering, and with the stuttering came more spittle.

Benjamin’s eyes widened, and his head tilted in a questioning manner. “She couldn’t have taken it all, Master, surely…”

“All of it! Do you need your ears checked? We’ll be ruined if we don’t get those coffers back!” Irvin began drumming his fist into the table again. “Nevermind the fact that she now has copies of our correspondence with Captain Sul’Garthe!” His entire body began to shake as he inhaled sharply, holding his breath.

Benjamin swallowed a lump in his throat. Cautiously, he took a step back from the table. “The correspondence is useless to her, Master. I’ll have the Guards track her down, but don’t trouble yourself over the letters.”

A sudden stillness came over Irvin, and he pulled himself out of his chair as he glowered across the table. “Useless? Captain Sul’Garthe is a notorious pirate from the Tuh’Chiri Empire. One look at that correspondence, and Reymaris will know about our illegal trade agreement. She’ll either be in a position to out us to the authorities, or she’ll have her next target! Don’t tell me to calm down! This is a complete disaster!”

Benjamin burst out laughing, holding his sides as he giggled.

“How can you be laughing? Benjamin, I swear to Baluur that I’ll gut you and feed you to the pigs!” Irvin roared.

Benjamin held up his hand, trying to compose himself. “Master, master please. Let me explain. Reymaris is a wanted criminal. There is no way she’ll turn us in, because she would have to turn herself in. She cares more about saving her own skin than ruining us.”

Irvin calmed a little. He clearly hadn’t thought of that. He plopped back down into his chair, pushing his head back to rest against the oak wood. “Maybe. I’ll acknowledge the sense in that, but it doesn’t change the fact that she might go after Captain Sul’Garthe, and we’re the ones that that set her on that path.”

“Pffft,” Benjamin scoffed, waving a dismissive hand. “Captain Sul’Garthe has plenty of enemies in the waters of Vamhadras. Everyone knows he’s in the wealthy business of acquisitions, and everyone wants a taste. Do you really think he’ll notice one more foe?”

Irvin started mumbling to himself, and an obvious wheeze rumbled deep within his chest. He coughed and hacked, thumping his hand against his chest as though it might help him catch his breath again. “You’re…ahem, excuse me, you’re not wrong, Benjamin. However, I don’t like to take chances. I’ll feel much better if you can catch her and nip this all in the bud. You know how those Tuh’Chiri can be, and I don’t want to give them any excuse for vindictive behavior.”

“I understand, Master. We’ll get her, and we’ll recover as much of the treasury as we can. I swear it,” Benjamin reassured him. He even smiled, a testament to his confidence.

“Be sure you do, Benjamin. I don’t need to tell you what the consequences are should you fail,” Irvin grumbled.

“Yes, Master. If I fail, you’ll gut me and feed me to the pigs. I understand. You’ve made yourself very clear on that point,” Benjamin said.

“Excellent. Now get out of my sight! You have work to do, and I need a foot-rub.” Irvin started snapping his fingers at the servant. “You there! Remove my shoes!” He leaned back a little more in his chair, bringing his short legs up off the floor to rest on the table.

The servant obeyed, and for what felt like the hundredth time, he questioned if his life was really worth living. Fear was a powerful motivator. If he had ever had doubts about that before ending up in this predicament, those doubts had been forever quieted. He envied Benjamin, watching him round up the guards for the pursuit. His job was not only adventurous, but sanitary. Chasing Ashryn Reymaris sounded much more fun than rubbing Irvin’s feet.

To Be Continued…

… The Spirit of Competition

So yesterday there was a big sportsball competition. Some of you may have noticed. It was pretty well talked about, so unless you live under a rock you were at least aware of it's happening. We have a few of what we'll call spectator sports here in the Realms. Most of us are simply bystanders enjoying it for it's entertainment value. And then of course there are tournaments which have a pretty equal mix of competitors and observers. You can break it down further into different types of tournaments; single, teams, war maneuvers, games of chance, games of skill... But they all have one simple thing in common: Competition.

Why You Should Go - The Players Meeting

The Realms has many facets to it. You have events, which make up the core of the game and allow us to immerse ourselves in a world different from our own;  the community as a whole, an amalgamation of friends and acquaintances  from all walks of life united by common interests (the game chief among them); and the players themselves (including event-holders), individuals who come back week after week to enjoy all that the game has to offer, who quest, feast, NPC and throw events, and without whom there would be no Realms at all.

All of these things together are vital to the continued success and long-term functioning of the game.  So too is the system of administration that is in place to help ensure that the game is able to endure. Among countless other aspects that we see throughout the year, this system chiefly consists of the Players Meeting and the Event-Holders Council. While the latter is open only to event-holders (as the name implies), the former is open to any person who has attended a legal Realms event within the previous calendar year. Attendance at the Players Meeting is an important way in which players can support the game.

Maybe you have never heard of or attended a Player's meeting in the past. Maybe it’s been a very long time since you've been to one. In any case, if you're thinking about going to the Players Meeting this weekend, here are a few good reasons why you should -

1) Your opportunity as a player to make your individual voice heard.
The meeting affords all players an opportunity to express opinions and engage in constructive discourse about proposed changes to all aspects of the game. If you do not agree with a specific proposal, or if you are in strong support of another, you have the ability to raise your hand and say your piece and to be heard by all who are there. You also have the ability to respond to others as well,  thereby fostering an open dialogue with your fellow players which is important to the health of the game. This is your forum to advocate for the change you want to see in the game, and to share that unique perspective with others. It is an opportunity for everyone to learn from one another.

2) The ability to have input into the running of the game.
One of the great aspects of Realms is the ability of any player to affect change within the system, and the Players Meeting is your chance to have an impact on any changes that are being considered for the coming year through your vote. Proposals can only make it to the Event-Holders Council in one of two ways - sent directly through the signature of ten or more EHs, or passed by a "yes" vote by two-thirds of the players present at the meeting. Thus, your votes have real meaning and can profoundly affect change. You also have the ability to submit proposals while at the meeting itself, to be voted on by the players during that time. You and your fellow players also have the responsibility of choosing the Players Rep,  who will absorb all of the feedback at the meeting and attend the EHC as a voting member to represent the players as a whole and their wishes.

3) It can help you take "ownership" of the game and give back to the community
The Realms is a community-based game. This means that it belongs to all of us, and all of us in the community have the responsibility to ensure that we are doing what is best for the game. Being a part of the process of submitting and voting on proposals and participating in the different discussions that occur can provide a sense of pride and investment in the game going forward and bring players together to help achieve different goals. In a lot of ways we are used to being consumers of games. If you buy a board game or a video game your only job is to interact with it as a user the way the authors intended. But we are all authors in the Realms - of our characters and our nations and the storylines we enjoy. All of these things foster involvement in ways other games do not. Having a voice at the Player's Meeting is another extension of that investment.

4) It allows you to give back to the game.
Like weapons and armor, playing styles and practices change over time, and in order to stay current and enjoyable the game must evolve over time to support these changes. Getting together once a year to vote on rule changes is a way of ensuring that the Realms stays dynamic and interesting even though it is over 30 years old.  Each year we have the opportunity to examine our rules and game experiences for things that we think could be done better or more effectively, and each of us has the opportunity to put forth  these suggestions to the rest of the community. We give back to the game by helping to make it better each year.
So there you have it, several good reasons to go to the Players Meeting this year! While any proposal that passes the Players Meeting must still be voted on by the Event-Holders Council before it becomes official, that does not negate the need for the players to get involved with the process. Remember, event-holders are players too!

And then hopefully after you've attended this year's meeting, and you've had time to absorb the discourse on the different proposals and to think about how they relate to the game as a whole, maybe this will get you thinking about things that were not brought up this year and maybe, perhaps by chance you will:

5) Be inspired for next year!
Either to submit a proposal (or two, or three) of your own for the next Players Meeting, or hold an event sometime in the upcoming year for a chance to attend both the Event-Holders Council and the Players Meeting next year.

More information about the meeting (such as location) can be found on the realmsnet event calendar.

See you on Saturday!
