Why This One Wants to Go: Ashen Bounty XI
Written by: Justin "J'orsta" Thibeault
This Ashen Bounty is very unlike other Ashen Bounties that J'ortsa has attended in recent years. This new return to the old ways entices and excites J'ortsa, as he has not attended a proper feast in some time. Nor has he attended a tournament in just as long if not longer! Khajiit is glad to be in the company of many of his adventuring friends and acquaintances. And he looks forward to the many mocktails and gambling shenanigans that may occur within the tavern.
The day of Loredas ((That's Saturday for you common folk)) will be filled with plenty of activities that J'ortsa finds most curious and delightful. The tournaments will surely be filled with epic highs and the crowd will be entertained as always. And the kid's quest will prove just how strong the up-and-coming legions of adventurers are, and whether or not the budget cuts are affecting the quality of their training.
And for those of you that have stomachs that could rival the great Sir Jean Magnifique Try Baptiste, the monstrous appetizer contest should delight and terrify you! As the culinary minds of Ashenmark are eccentric and daring, no dish is too exotic for their chefs.
J'ortsa himself is looking forward the most to the Labyrinth beneath the Stoneheart. This one does not know what the Stoneheart is, but he heard there was treasure left reasonably but not excessively guarded and as such he will be making at attempt to purloin, err liberate it. As all saviors of the Realms must do.
Ashenmark court is a very elusive event, and this one is happy that he will be a part of the return of such formalities. As an observer. This one has no plans for Court, unless... But as this one knows so little of Ashenmark court, will be on the edge of his bench waiting in anticipation. ((Writers note: Id loooove to put a basketball joke here, but I am only so funny and creative.))
Sundas is also shrouded in mystery. And that is what excites Khajiit. This one hopes it is not another extradimensional threat, or evil lich that he must contend with. Although at least with a new lich perhaps Lord Elric will be less busy this time. Maybe this time it will be golems; this one has heard that Ashenmark has a lot of golems. Or perhaps kobolds that seem to infest all manners of locations in these kingdoms and nations. Whatever we will be tasked with, it is certain to be of no match for the combined efforts of the adventuring party that calls the Realms its home.
May your path lead you to warm sands,
J'ortsa
Watcher of the Skyless Sea
OOC:
I personally am really excited to see an Ashenmark feast, which may or may not contain cheese. And the weekend is full of fun activities that I know I will be enjoying, and hopefully the rest of yall will too! Im also really glad that Paladins Call is making its appearance here at this event, its a great cause and it makes me really happy that we can have something like it.
Any questing to be had when Ashenmark is involved has never disappointed. And that is what I am most excited for. I will look forward to seeing you all at Ashen Adventures in the next year, where we will all explore whatever new questline Ashenmark has cooked up for us.

What You Missed - Chimeron Questing XXIX: Blue Town Rush
Written by: Antonio "Mistral" Laudati
Disclaimer, this is all from my understanding and recollection. I do not claim that everything in here is 100% accurate. If anyone has any corrections and/or additions to the information located in this article, please feel free to add them.
I arrived with Aelias, and Lesile at our Base Camp on the morning of Saturday the 14th of September. Once there we were brought up to speed on the events of the previous evening. There are a slew of tunnels running under Blackwood and Chimeron that that the Happy Mining Company wished to investigate however there were many golems and crab like creatures roaming them. Thus, they asked for assistance from a group of adventurers.
We learned from Dr. Lamia,I am not sure if I am recalling her name correctly…I am bad with names, that an ancient group for people called the Draconians once lived in something called “The Black City” (I think). Friday night a device of some sort had been found that could play recordings from sulfur (yellow) colored “data crystals”, each crystal containing a record left by those who had come before. Dr. Lamia had one of her assistance transcribe these recordings so that the information can be shared with all and to ensure that it is not lost in the case of the recording device being destroyed beyond repair.
Our first task was to locate the rest of Dr. Lamia’s team, which had gone missing. We began our search by exploring the same tunnels (caves) that they had. During our search for Dr. Lamia’s fellow researchers, and through a lot of are exploration of the tunnels, we encountered ruby and sapphire (red and blue) constructs. The Ruby constructs appeared to be resistant to magic, while the Sapphire constructs seemed to be susceptible to it (only in the limbs), however their bodies were significantly tougher than those of mortal men and their armor. Finally there were “Berserkers” that were bright red construction that generally charged us with exceptionally share bladed arms. Thankfully, these constructs were not particularly stable and collapsed upon taking any damage.
We finally found the researches in a laboratory/research area in which they were conducting experiments to learn more about what was happening in the area. Several of the researches were trapped behind a Stasis field, although I am unsure why or how that happened Aelias was able to utilize his magic in order to free most of the researches and the others were freed before the place collapsed, but I am getting ahead of myself.
After resting for a bit to recover our strengths, we felt rumblings like that of an earthquake. Only small rumblings at first, but then soon enough they became larger and larger until the entire area we had been in was caved in. Emerging from the cave was a giant worm-like creature, with a dozen or so segments. While we initially tried to just let the creature be, it quickly became clear that it saw us as food. Personally, I did not feel like feeding the wildlife.
As things think was huge, and at least as strong as a Giant (OOG it was swinging a fair amount of “boulder”) we all tried to stay at range and either hit it with lightning bolts or opt for hit and run tactics. Eventually this creature followed us all the way back to base camp.
Once we had more space I thought hat we were more equipped to deal with this thing, but it had another trick for use. As we damaged the segments of this creature, they broke apart and began attacking us on their own. While I don’t feel that they were are strong as they were connected, the shear mass of them made for a difficult fight, but in the end we mad it through.
The next place that we ended up exploring was a Laboratory of some sort. There were all sorts of experiments that appear to have been conducted and those tools were littered about the place. Of note, there were a couple of crystalized flowers, which appeared to be flowers that were petrified but instead of turning to stone, they turned into crystal. Once we learned what we could, we headed back to base camp.
Later that evening, we made for a library that Dr. Lamia had asked to gather books from. I believe that Dr. Lamia and her fellow researchers were forced to feel that library due to all of the constructs in the area. When we arrived in the library, there was another group already there, that were intent on destroying everything there. While we saved what we could, in the end the library was destroyed.
Through our journeys, we found more “Data” Crystals” which give us a bit of insight into what happened to “The Black City” may hundreds of years ago. Dr. Lamia had her interns take transcripts of those recordings, so the information can be share with any who are interested.
Sunday morning, we set towards clearing out the last of the constructs that inhabited the tunnels. On our way thought these particular tunnels, we were blocked by several stasis fields. In addition, the constructs that we were facing weren’t always “correct” some would have twisted legs and many were two Sapphire constructs fused together that grew arms when you separated them down the middle. There were also some crab like creatures that were attacking us. We discovered that the crab-like creatures didn’t want us, but rather the gems that were powering the statis fields. That worked for us, as nothing we had could crack them.
As we made our way past the Stasis field, we saw a lit forge. I am not sure if it was directly producing the constructs, they seemed intent on guarding it. Finally, we made it to the source of energy that was powering and revitalizing the constructs. We encountered a group of constructs seeming teathered a power source. Once a construct took enough damage however, it separated from the power source and generally went after the attacker. It took a lot of resources and everyone’s efforts, but in the end, we won the day.
At the end of it all, we found a map depicting the caverns under Blackwood, Chimeron and what we think is the location of “The Black City.” We also found another recording in which the speaker made a desperate plea not to let whatever they trapped in “The Black City” out.
I am sure that there are things that I missed and stuff I forgot, but this is my summary of what happened as we explored the caverns under Blackwood.

Maker's Space with John “Gordon” Rescigno
Organized by: Justin "J'ortsa" Thibeault
1. What is your OOC name?
John Rescigno
2. What is your character's name?
Gordon
Photo provided by John
3. What crafting mediums do you typically work in?
Leather, sometimes foam.
4. What is your favorite medium to work with? Why is it your favorite?
Leather. Partially because it's therapeutic hitting something over and over, but mostly because of the feel and versatility. Leather can be tough, soft, or in between. You can dye it, tool it, paint it, and cut it into any shape.
5. What is the most challenging part of working with this medium for you? How did you overcome it?
It's incredibly expensive to get into, and the RSI you can get sucks majorly. Scrap leather is your best friend for starting out. Getting the basics down of form and construction are more important than tooling at the start. As for the RSI, sorry. Take frequent breaks when tooling and pay attention to your body's needs.

6. What is the piece you are most proud of? Why?
My current cuirass was a labor of love. It was the first time I really took a pattern and made it my own instead of following the guidelines. There are secrets hidden in it, and all of the symbols and carving has a lot of personal significance to me. That being said I'm making a new one that I'm going to like more.
Photo provided by John
7. What is the piece you have done most recently that you are allowed to share? Tell us about it!
I was really honored to be asked to make two sets of bracers to be presented at Leviathan for Janna's kids. I was able to make it so that they can grow with them thanks to the pattern I used and using eyelets as opposed to buckles.
8. What is the earliest piece you made? How long ago did you make it?
In 2016, I made a pouch with soft, undyed leather. The rivets clicked together, and I didn't even know you had to hammer them. We all start somewhere.
9. What medium do you wish to learn more about or have been interested in?
I've dipped my toes into foamwork but I am still really bad at it. I had to try it for a character in another game and made some cool automail, but I want to revisit that garb in leather or maybe better foam at some point.
10. What advice do you have for the rest of the community when it comes to crafting and making?
Try it. You are going to fail at first. You're going to hate things you make that will blow other people away with how amazing they are. You're your own worst enemy and you need to trust the process. Put love into it. My actual blood is in some pieces. I don't recommend that; it was an accident.
Photo provided by John
11. What inspires you to do what you do?
I'm really proud that my efforts into improving my garb and armor have inspired others, which keeps me going. Seeing others up their own game and grow and learn is amazing.
(Editor’s [Justin T.] note: I am one of these people that have been inspired to up my game and learn because of John. :D)
12. Is there anything else you really wanna share with us? Any upcoming projects, etc.?
I'm making myself some new armor which is going to reflect recent changes to my character.

What You Missed - Blackwood Questing
Written by: Nixon "Jasper" Showalter
I have finally had a moment to sit down and reflect on the wide variety of things that took place over this past weekend and there was a lot. What matters most is that we all made it back alive and were able to help the lands and people of Blackwood rid themselves of corruption.
I arrived at a small tavern in Blackwood on Friday after a long hiatus of adventuring, spending most of my summer in Alifon. While it was good to be back and see many familiar faces, there was a problem in Blackwood that needed our attention urgently. In the back of the tavern was a small doctor’s practice. Here I found two patients who had been dropped off days before, asleep, and had yet to wake up. Apparently there were two of many that the doctor had seen. Before I was able to do anything, a local arrived at the tavern telling stories of a werewolf gone feral, terrorizing the area. Most of the adventurers in the tavern left to handle that situation luckily, however Makhta and I decided to stay back and focus on the patients left in the tavern. The doctor had tried many homeopathic methods but none were successful. Being a spellcaster myself, I was able to show the doctor some spells I had acquired during my time in the Realms. Healing magic was able to awaken the sleeping patients for a few moments, however they quickly returned back to sleep. Questioning them about their condition proved futile so we looked for other avenues to explore. The doctor mentioned that these villagers were from a nearby lumber town that was just down the way a bit. A noncontagious sickness that makes people sleepy? This is a problem two lone adventurers can handle!
If you have any experience going on adventures yourself, you might be able to imagine that this was in fact not a problem two lone adventurers could handle. After trudging through the darkness for a bit, this vampire duo arrives at this quaint village that did appear to be quiet and sleepy. Not much more than a moment later, however, Makhta and I were brutally attacked. While Makhta may be a very proficient fighter, I am more of a talker. Unfortunately for me, these villagers were not quick to do more than hiss aggressively at us, quickly killing me. I have been told that Makhta stabbed them many times with no luck at breaking them down. Lucky for me, I have a tendency to keep getting back up and get back up I did. Unlucky for me, one of these very unhappy villagers was standing right next to me and quickly put a stop to me being alive. For the moment I was conscious, I saw that Makhta had lost all of her limbs. According to Makhta, after killing me the second time these creatures began consuming my flesh until they were satisfied, and then promptly fell asleep similar to how the patients in the tavern were. Through sheer will and determination, Makhta was able to drag me back to the tavern by my tabard with her fangs where I was able to get back up yet again (this will be a trend as you continue reading). Here we were able to relay information to the doctor and our adventuring friends about the state of the village and the people left within it.
We all decided that going back to the lumber village was a good idea given we now had more than two people to face the problem with, so that is exactly what we did. Heading back with a much larger group, we were able to kill some of the ravenous foes at least temporarily, but they seemed to just keep coming back. However, we were able to recover a box of food from the middle of the village that had some apples, bananas, marshmallows, and most notably a bag of fresh flour. I found this box and was quickly told to leave the area so I did just that, heading back to the tavern. The doctor was kind enough to point me in the direction of the baker who was set up down by the water. Now while I have heard some vampires get heightened vision in the darkness, I was not so lucky. I stumbled my way alone through the woods and nearly into a lake but eventually found the lone baker right where the doctor told me he would be! I learned that while the flour was helpful, he needed yogurt to make the bread. With this, he also needed the power of a fire spirit to cleanse the ingredients and make the magic recipe he had in mind. So off I went to help find the rest of the things we needed.
While we had been doing all of these things, we had begun to notice spirits following us around and offering us guidance. Sebon, the water spirit who also was a dragon (that’ll be relevant later), was the first spirit I met. They were very kind and were offering a trial to test your strength and earn mana crystals which proved to be very helpful. The next spirit I met was Cernunnos, who appeared to be wearing a hat of his dear friend. Cernunnos was extremely helpful and one who I interacted with a lot, often looking to them for guidance during the night. Akki was the next spirit, one of nature taking the shape of a bird. Akki had a unique personality and was someone I quickly became fond of and who delivered the magic bread we made to those who needed its power. Agatha was the last spirit I met. She was very kind and introduced me to an Oolie Boolie spirit they had with them. Unfortunately, this spirit that was following her around happened to spontaneously die as we were introducing ourselves, which I assure you was not my fault. I did however say some kind words trying my best to give it a smooth transition to wherever spirits go after they pass which seemed to be successful as I was given a vision of the spirit in a beautiful garden nodding to me as it flew off to where it was needed next. The last.. spirit (question mark) that we saw that night was Princess Kalia. I did not get to interact with her much but she will become important tomorrow.
As we still needed the yogurt and fire spirit, two groups split off to tackle these acquisitions. Myself and some others went to find the fire spirit while another group went to find the yogurt, and find the fire spirit we did. Wandering around for a bit we stumbled upon a gelatinous cube of magma. I am unsure whether we ever needed a fire spirit or if this was the fire spirit, but I digress. I tried the classic asking it for help before murdering it and what do you know, it wasn't much of a talking type. It was however a kill-me-and-envelop-me-with-magma type so that was something I did not try twice! I decided to take my place in the backline while some proficient fighters took stabs at the creature. We were seemingly able to break it into pieces that slowly reconnected, so if we could destroy the pieces before they had a chance to reform we could defeat the creature! During this time, Cernunnos was standing on the back lines with me. I fell back to them and had a very nice conversation about what it meant to be an adventurer and my perspective on what I do. It was very nice actually and they seemed to agree with my perspective on doing what was right. This conversation, taking place while I was healing my friends and allies, took us to the end of the fight with the magma blob, which dropped some sort of magma bits we were able to pick up and use. These ended up being helpful in getting the yogurt I believe as Agatha wanted them and she was who we got the yogurt from.
At the end of the night, the baker was able to bake some delicious bread that he was kind enough to share with the party as well as give to Akki to fly and provide to the villagers who needed it. As an extremely eventful night came to a close, there was a sense of calmness. While the sick villagers were still… sick… we were able to begin taking the steps to help the lands of Blackwood.
With the end of day one, the beginning of day two was upon us. As news of what we were facing spread through the Realms, we were accompanied by many more adventurers than the day before. One of these adventurers was one I had not met before but ended up helping keep the vibe high throughout the day and night. We quickly learned that our friend Akki had set up shop! I had gathered some mana crystals the night before the Akki seemed to be very interested in. I of course immediately bartered nearly all the goods I had on me for some bracelets that looked to be very important. These bracelets will not come up again in this story because they were not in fact important whatsoever. Before I had more time to sell more of my important items for random knick knacks, we were informed of a cult doing some sort of ritual with these mana crystals, always a good sign. As we arrived we heard screams that the ritual was going wrong as they attempted to summon what I was told was the Three Faced God. We had to pull the spirits out of the cultists to defeat them and stop them from fighting us. While all of this was happening, many of our friends were getting their souls pulled to another plane. Given I keep my soul in a.. sword.. I was not one of the people who got pulled away but apparently those who were there killed Princess Kalia’s, also known as Kali’Rex’s, father. These people who had transferred planes all seemed to return home safely, however, breaking the news of her father’s death to Kali’Rex did not go well, she was very upset as one could imagine. It is important to know that the plane these adventurers went to was Tartarus, Kali’Rex’s father was a demon of sorts, very corrupted and beyond saving from what I have been told. While we were off doing this, a different group of us had gone to help some small fairy-esque creatures called Nixets. This would come up occasionally as some adventurers would transform into these small creatures becoming extremely difficult to hit.
Once back at the tavern and things had died down, a few kobolds wandered to us. I immediately made friends with them to some success! I believe they were named Gleeb and Gloob, very sweet and friendly, ate gold. Around this time another joined us as well, a vampire hunter named Jorgen. Now you could imagine my feelings towards a vampire hunter being one myself. Yes you are exactly right, potential friend. So when Jorgen asks me to walk into the woods with him I do just that! However, to my dismay, some more kobolds appear and before I can introduce them to Gleeb and Gloob, they throw a nice piece of dynamite directly at me, scattering Jasper bits all around. I was told that Jorgen then took my body and impaled me with a wooden stake but hey, things happen. Upon getting up, we see that there are now vampire thralls we need to fight. Jorgen is able to teach us how to fight them effectively and we push them all the way down a trail until we see that Sebon had been captured with anti-magic chains. We fight off waves of enemies and using the dynamite we got from the kobolds, are able to free Sebon! If only this was the last time he was captured…
Once we return to the tavern again, Kali’Rex is around and so is someone I will refer to as “Yesper”. This is Vesper from another timeline who does not like to be called Yesper, however for the sake of your reading that is how I will differentiate them. Kali’Rex and Yesper are immediately at eachothers throats, screaming about how the other is not helping the land and is evil and how they themself can fix the land. Kali’Rex wants power, Yesper wants Kali’Rex dead. From Yesper we learn that like her father, Kali’Rex is a demon and through a Knights of the Sable Dragon question, we learn that Kali’Rex is evil. Everyone is in little groups discussing what is best while I run between Yesper and Kali’Rex trying to best understand what is going on until I realize that yes, Kali’Rex is evil. Yesper eggs me on as I approach Kali’Rex and Kiddo is able to stab her in the back before I do anything, solid move. Downside is, she seems to be resistant to just about everything. Cressida had been speaking to her the most and as all hell breaks loose, Kali’Rex goes to Cressida for a hug. She whispers something before exploding, killing a fair few of us in the blast.
A small aside. While Yesper and Kali’Rex were having their arguments and the adventurers were generally confused and collaborating, Vesper showed up! He is also screaming about.. a lot? Not important. What is important is that Vesper comes over and completely kills my moth friend, Hecatthee. Not cool. So if you remember there was someone around keeping the vibe up of the quest, this was none other than Brorion. So of course when Brorion asks me if Vesper is killing the vibe, I say yes! Hecatthee was a vibe that was very much just killed! So naturally when Brorion asks me if he should lighting brolt Vesper… I say yes! Now in hindsight, was this a bad call? Absolutely not. Vesper dies and is quickly raised. Now I was standing in an inopportune spot directly next to Brorion as Vesper approached and absolutely annihilated both of us. Worth it. Hecatthee deserved better.
All of that being said, we were back on track. We wandered into the woods where we found a new spirit, one that was being fed on by Kali’Rex trying to garner her power, now known as Crimson Fang. Together with the spirit, we stormed the place Kali’Rex was defending. This fight was rough on our party. Creatures who could be slayed with some effort, but once they were done continue to explode again and again. The issue with this was that these creatures needed to be searched to weaken Kali’Rex. It may not have been easy but we managed to find all of the crystals and weaken Kali’Rex enough for Crimson Fang to finish her. Though the fight was difficult and well fought, we were able to defeat Kali’Rex for the foreseeable future, her body exploding as one final act of defiance.
I look back on the events of this day, sometimes with a heavy heart. I believe that often we all act and do what we believe is best, I spoke to Cernunnos about this for a while the night before. What does it mean for one to be evil? While I didn’t hear it first hand, I was told that Kalia whispered to Cressida, “at least you tried.” Maybe in another life, another timeline, a different group of adventurers would have ended the situation differently. I believe I will think about this for many years, maybe for the rest of my days in the Realms. We will never know what would have happened to Blackwood if Kalia was given a spot among the current spirits, I will try my best not to ponder what will never be.
Even as we head back to the tavern, the day is far from over. Rumblings spread throughout the land as we realize that locations are being attacked and kobolds are heightening their use of explosives. We split into four groups and defend points of interest until the sieges stop, when we are able to settle down to eat.
As night breaks through, a kobold named Jeffery shows up to the tavern, speaking of their dragon master eating all of their friends. They had managed to escape this cult and were looking for help. We follow Jeffery’s lead, fighting through tunnels against spidorpians, trying to find the dragon's lair. After some time we arrive at a door guarded by a puzzle. For quite a while we grapple with the puzzle, trying our best to understand the intricacies of it. After a while of being unsuccessful, someone uses their knightly power, Force of Wills, to be able to enter through the door. On the other end we find a maze of electric energy that we have to carefully navigate through without being shocked. Once on the other side, we are able to finally enter the dragon’s lair. Here we finally see the corrupt dragon that has been plaguing the people, spirits, and lands of Blackwood. We all knew what needed to be done. The battle was intense, with the dragon spewing arcane breath at us and eating the bodies of those who fell. However we are nothing if not persistent, and with persistence we were able to slay the foe. Slamming its body with magical blows, cutting it with silver swords, and feeding it anti-magic chains, the dragon was slayed. As its body decayed, the magic energy it had been absorbing was able to return to the land, ridding the corruption from the sick townsfolk who had been sleeping for days on end.
The night turns to morning as a new day begins. Sunday was spent tying up the loose ends of the day before. While the dragon was slain, Blackwood still needed to be divided among the spirits. But before we could do that, there was a problem. A kobold food pantry down the way had been posting wanted posters for some adventures for whatever crimes they were accused of. While the kobolds in the food pantry were armed, they had one rule, no weapons. If you entered without weapons, they would not harm you and everything was fine. They were actually quite nice to talk to. However, this was not good enough for some people who decided to barge in and begin slaughtering the kobolds!! I tried my best to communicate that they were not looking to murder us all but I can only do so much. What I did do was escort out some kobolds who were completely harmless and just wanted to live their little life in their little food pantry. Apparently they had a map of where Seban was being kept, who was kidnapped for a second time. If I have any advice for Blackwood, it is anti-kidnapping classes for your spirits. I stayed with the kobolds trying to comfort the ones who were still alive. While I was doing this, apparently some adventurers went off and rescued Seban. I learned after the fact that he was kidnapped, we found a map, and freed him. Now that we had all of the spirits saved, we held a meeting to first dub Crimson Fang as.. Crimson Fang, as well as divide up the lands of Blackwood for each spirit to watch over.
The night we slayed the dragon, meteors began crashing down. This caused some damage as you can imagine, but it also released some space orcs and.. Cows! This mission caused me to lose the plot a little but it was a joyous time. Apparently, if you belittled the orcs enough they could be slayed. So while people ran around bullying the orcs, some of us began wrangling the cows. Most of these seemed to be straight forward except one who was prancing around happily making mooing sounds. I noticed it had a bit of rhythm to its moos and that it wanted to be sung to. So I began singing to this cow as I led it to the post we were going to tie it to. I don’t know what we ended up doing with the cows but we defeated the orcs who wanted us dead and stopped the cows from trampling the villagers. The very last thing we did was help the Nixets. They were hit by lightning when we bust the puzzle door down and also the dragon’s corruption caused their magic to weaken. We gave the Nixets some magic to make them feel better and defeated some creatures keeping them captive. We ended the day with a small ritual to get a better understanding of the events that took place.
Overall, this was one of the most chaotic and enjoyable weekends of my adventuring career. We appeared to be successful in helping the sick villagers, purifying the corruption through the land, and fairly dividing Blackwood among the spirits to watch over.

Why I Want To Go - Chimeron Questing XXIX: Blue Town Rush

Chimeron has a long and storied history of throwing involved and interesting questing events, but there is a new plot team taking the reigns this year, and I am eager to see what they have in store for us adventurers. We saw a teaser of this plot at the Clontarf Shuffle, and it was a lot of fun – cool effects and interesting monsters. I believe this staff will continue to deliver.
We have been asked to aid the Happy Monster Mining Company explore some recently unearthed caves and discover the source of hostile creatures that have been harrowing the workers. What could possibly go wrong?
Given the expectation of excellent weather, a great event site, and the promise of adventure, I can’t wait to see what the weekend brings!
See you on the field,

Rumors for September 1024
[Arken]
Refugees from Mid-Realm have been received. They claim to have been driven out by wild folk and incomprehensible magics. Scouts have been dispatched to confirm the more outlandish claims of strange magics and to see if aid can be rendered.
[Blackavar]
This new, detailed map of Blackavar shows a more detailed topography and the extent of our scouting over the past year.
[Blackwood]
As the temperatures start to drop for the year, the murky fog has begun to settle. With more clarity, there have been reports of Grimalkin plunging down towards Hartlepool.
~~~
"The fire forests of Najeena have begun to smoke with the unmistakable smell of sulfur. The wildlife surprisingly, though aware, doesn't seem to mind.
~~~
A new river has begun to carve a path through Achoria, but the soil surrounding it is refusing to become fertile and even our best farmers can seem to put their finger on why.
~~~
In studying the battlefield of Change's Last Stand, our Arcane archeologists were expecting to find physical remnants of the plane of Domai to catalog from where the planes collided. Though their assessment was correct, what they weren't expecting to find were trace samples of foreign matter from the Prismatic Plane. Our best portal mages have searched high and low for a breach, and have found remnants of a now closed portal.
[Chimeron]
Scholars doing field work in the mountainous north-eastern region of Chimeron report exceptionally dangerous conditions in a new-discovered historical site. There are many strange tales to be heard, and by these stories reach a population center it’s difficult to separate truth from embellishment.
What You Missed - Invictus Tournaments
Written by: Quinn “Fansy” Mattes
Greetings to the realms!
For those of us that were unable to attend Invictus tournaments, I will now regale you with the events of that weekend.
On Friday evening our merry band of adventurers were invited by a demon to participate in a series of challenges to obtain a magic item, an offer that was in no way suspicious. We were told that another group of adventurers would be racing us for the item and that our new “friend” would be aiding both parties, though the demon did say he preferred our group over the other. Our first challenge was an encroaching hoard of poisonous goatfolk (or I guess venomous as to my knowledge no one ate any goat people). After a bit of fighting we encountered a puzzle lock that the more intelligent of our number solved while the rest faced down the bleating masses. We then faced a gaping chasm with a narrow and winding bridge and falling rocks that I definitely crossed with ease and didn’t take four steps then woke up on the other side. Our party then encountered a puzzle with that most insidious of mind games that has plagued the realms for decades: counting. We found numbered lights that needed to be illuminated in the correct order lest the fury of the goatfolk be brought down upon us. Through a hint left by our demonic companion the correct order was determined to be backwards from 10 and with our night vision in shambles we proceded. As we continued further into this demonic fun house the party found three dazed and confused people: an old man searching for his grandson, a mother holding a newborn baby, and a young child. It was
determined by another hint left by the morally upstanding demon that one must be chosen to die. When faced by this moral quandary, Avendar heroically chose himself and fell on his sword. While a truly moving act I shall remember for years to come it was nonetheless ineffective as this caprine hell would not be circumvented. After a lengthy discussion of who had the most to live for, who would care for either a new grandson or new baby, a concerning amount of calls for murder from the child, whether or not any of this was real, and a morbid tangent on if the baby counted as an option a decision was made. I brought my sword down on the child that was strangely gung ho for murder and all parties involved dissipated in a magical puff and the group continued. After the test of our moral fiber was passed, or at least entertained the strangely chipper demon enough to let us continue, we found ourselves face to face with the opposing group. The item was in reach and all that stood in our way was a loud and vaguely southern foe. It was a pitched battle with our healing magics dwindling when a new face to the realms named Azurite was able to sneak to the item and recover it without notice resulting in our immediate release from this challenge. All through this challenge the demon was offering to help us with clues, healing, and chasm body retrieval in exchange for future favors. The item itself was a lamp able to call our demonic patron to intervene when needed, something that will cause no future problems I’m sure.
With that concerning episode and a nights rest behind us we set off the next day for a whirlwind of tournaments. Events of every weapon combination imaginable (except double daggers to most people’s relief) in both armored and unarmored styles. There were also more complex challenges such as V’s vendetta, Duncan’s challenge, 1s and 2s, three lives and 5 points to victory. The weather held and everyone fought hard which made for a real nail biter in the standings as the first day ended with Jericho and Avendar with 8 points and Celtrex right behind them with 7. After the dinner break and a celebration of Runaris’s unicorn themed birthday (King Shandar dressed as a unicorn was a sight to behold) we moved onto the highlight of the event (at least for me): the non com game shows put on by Madame Zarine. The games started with “Besties” , a take on the newlyweds game. If you don’t know what the newlyweds game is don't worry! It was quite clear that the 6 participants didn’t grasp the concept of the game despite multiple explanations. Between the rampant bending of rules by team Jack and Runaris and the realization of team V-power and Elora that V-power’s lack of literacy would make writing down answers incredibly difficult it was a hilarious watch. Moving on to the next game show was the worst survey, which was a take on the family feud. The survey questions were answered by community members in a poll a few weeks before and it was fun trying to figure out what everyone thought the worst of the worst was. As for anyone wondering if any of us understood how family feud worked the answer is no so it was equally fun and chaotic. Finally we went to an eight person game of a legally distinct Jeopardy like game with realms based categories. This was my favorite game (not just because I got third) but because the questions covered a wide range of realms trivia that could stump newbies and oldbies alike and hearing the explanations of the questions I didn't know was everything I enjoy about hearing about the realms past.
On the final day of the tournament with the scores so close, King Shandar decreed that the top four competitors would fight an event from the Order of the List known as a grand slam. The event is split into a best of 3 rounds each with 7 sets that are best of 3 fought back to back. Each combatant alternates choosing weapon combos each set and whether the fights are armored or unarmored is decided at the start of each round. For those keeping track at home, assuming you lose every fight in every set in every round that's at least 28 fights back to back. It was some of the most intense fighting I’ve ever done and a real trial of endurance but it’s probably the most fun I’ve ever had in a tournament. The day ended with Jericho as the overall winner of the tournament with Avendar as runner up and Celtrex in third place.
With glory won and new stories to tell we depart the lands of Invictus in high spirits, if not slightly concerned about a new demonic boon in the realms. I hope to see you all on the field of competition or at my shoulder on the adventuring path in the coming days.
Why I Want To Go - Blackwood Questing
Written by: Sarah "Evitta" Fournier
A plea for help has been posted throughout the Realms, will you answer the call?
When I received word of the necrotic affliction posing a threat to the people of Blackwood, I immediately began making arrangements to travel. As someone who dedicates her life to a Goddess of life and nature, and to healing others, this is a call that cannot be refused. We will have a lot of work to do. I hope that you’ll join me on this front, and I pray to Gaia that we may slow the progression of this malady affecting the village of Kul’Rhex.
Warm wishes and safe travels,
Evitta Jainrose
OOC:
I can’t wait to see what the Blackwood team has in store for us this weekend. I loved the Domai quest series for its immersive storyline, epic night quests, interesting NPCs, and fantastic magic marshaling. If you’re someone who feels out of the loop during quests, Blackwood does a great job of making people feel included. I’ve been especially impressed with some of the younger folks in Blackwood upping the ante for immersion and impactful storytelling in our game. Feast of Blackwood 2023 was a great conclusion to their long running event series, and I know that the team will be aiming to step it up even further with this new series. I also had a blast at Blackwood Tournaments in July, where the tavern ambiance was on point, and the Fated Arena had everyone involved and on their toes! Blackwood events are unmissable for me, and I know they will be for you too. See you there!
