Legends of Voraniss: Ekkaku the Serpent (Part I)

by Renee "Kindrianna" Booke

Deep within the swamps of Voraniss, the Kul’Matha still pay homage to the serpent spirit Ekkaku. Upon the banks of the Nathair’uncain, the Serpent’s Channel, sits Ekkaku’s shrine, watching over every voyage and every crossing. To the Kul’Matha, this is a holy site, and out of respect for Ekkaku, they do not indulge in their darker vices upon this ground. Waging war, or the spilling of blood, is not what Ekkaku stood for, and so it is thusly forbidden for any tribe to disrespect the serpent’s seat of power in such a manner. The Kul’Matha do not agree on much, but Ekkaku is their common ground, and if they must make peace or gather to converse on controversial tribal affairs, they will often journey to this place to do so.

For many years this was all that the mortal races of Voraniss knew about Ekkaku. The end of the story. But an unexpected alliance between Voraniss and Xale’an of the Uthi Tribe, fostered by heroes of the Realms, presented a unique opportunity to learn beyond the scattered reports of daring scouts who had braved the dangers of the swamps. As Xale’an explained, Ekkaku had grown up as a member of the Troxl Tribe, the very same as Otugu, one of the other Kul’Matha that had accompanied her to the Druid King’s coronation. Within Kul’Matha society, the Troxl are widely regarded as authorities in alchemy and medicine, a tradition largely accredited to Ekkaku’s genius. Back then, however, the Troxl were a smaller group, choosing to remain neutral in most of the large-scale conflicts that consumed Kul’Matha culture.

The Troxl would stalk the battlefields after a skirmish, carrying their baskets of herbs with them as they searched for wounded to treat. They would heal who they could and send them off to fight another day. Sometimes they would receive small gifts as recompense; trophies, trinkets, a meal, or a good story, but by and large the gratitude, they felt, was sufficient. In this way, they made themselves invaluable, and it afforded them some protection from the larger tribes that normally would have seized upon the opportunity to wipe out a weaker clan and claim their territory. It was on one such occasion that Ekkaku would meet Notl-Nuhtletl, a young warrior who dreamed of becoming a champion of Kul’Mathanigalurgtha, the Mother Serpent.

Notl-Nuhtletl had been wounded in battle against the Krezazu, a faction of Kul’Matha who were greatly feared by all who knew them. The Krezazu practiced dark and forbidden magics, magics that pulled not from the earth or the Mother Serpent, but from the deepest reaches of the Otherworld, the realm of spirits. There they had found a being that promised them ancient knowledge and power over death. The Krezazu would pay for this power with blood, sending thirteen souls a season to the Otherworld to solidify their dark pact, and seal the agreement. This entity of the Otherworld would not accept ordinary souls, however. It had a taste for the sick and vulnerable. It required of the Krezazu that they bring only the souls of those who were suffering under the curse of illness or disease. Luckily for Notl-Nuhtletl, she had not been one of the chosen sacrifices, and the Krezazu had left her to die a warrior’s death and succumb to her wounds.

Ekkaku discovered her in this weakened state and healed Notl-Nuhtletl; and she, in turn, told the Troxl of the growing threat of the Krezazu. With each passing month, she said, their desire for the power of the Otherworld grew stronger. They neglected their lands, she explained, and their swamps had begun to rot. They had either not noticed, or cared, that their air had turned to poison, where ash fell instead of rain, and their streams were sickly and green. If something was not done, and soon, Notl-Nuhtletl feared the pestilence that plagued the Krezazu would come for them all.

Morning Coffee Break

 Got your morning cup of coffee and a few minutes? Great! We're trying out a new feature at the View - we're going to be asking a series of questions and we want to know your answers! The question is posted below. So while you sip your morning beverage of choice, ruminate on this one:

Tell us a memory that involves Realms and an actual body of water (I guess it can be about a blue tarp body of water if the story is really really good)?

Five Questions About Getting Back Part 6

The time will soon come when we will sit beside one another around the late night campfire, raise goblets together as we feast, or cross swords on the field of war, and all of us are looking forward to the day where we are safely and responsibly playing Realms together again. Thinking of the better days are just around the corner, we asked you some questions about getting back to playing Realms.

Answers by Ryan Welch and Sarah Fournier

In your time away from Realms, what have you been spending your hobby-time on instead of going to or preparing for events?

Ryan: … what do you mean “instead of preparing for events”?

In the past year, I’ve been working with Pat “Saka” Bobell, Ryan “Garen” Keller, Owen “Balthzar” West, and Kersten “Ypnn” Prince to bring life to the RealmsCraft Questing events in Minecraft. In addition to RCQ, I’ve attended every other virtual event this year and have contributed content to all but two of them.

Last Fall, Stephen “Laika” Sanford ran practices for SMAS at WPI. Those were particularly … interesting … because of the tight restrictions the school had in place, but Stephen made a bunch of very excellent dummies for the newbies to train against.

I think there’s an old saying that goes something like: “you can take Me out of the Realms, but you can’t take the Realms out of Me”.

Sarah: In the beginning of our break, I spent way too much time playing World of Warcraft. I’ve stepped back from that and now I’ve been playing my ukulele more and writing music. I’ve also been doing more cooking and baking which I’ve been enjoying a lot.

Accepting as fact that there are lots of things that we have all missed, what have you missed the most about being at Realms Events?

Ryan: I am very grateful that I’ve been able to maintain so many of my social connections online while we’ve been away. I do miss being around people, but that’s practically universal. I particularly miss combat. Drills and forms and practice targets are just fine for keeping the dust off, but there’s no proper substitute for squaring off against a live opponent.

I miss being able to hear things in three dimensions. When we’re online, everyone is right in your ear… you can’t pick up bits of conversation from across the hall or call out announcements to everyone in a room.

Sarah: The thing I’ve missed most about being at realms is being in the thick of battle. There’s no feeling quite like it, and I really miss being a backpack and hiding behind my fighters. I’ve realized that I’m definitely an extrovert and I miss being surrounded by people on the weekends. I’m so excited to get back into it.

Are there are plots or specific events or anything that you are particularly looking forward to for after the Realms gets going again?

Ryan: Black and White is a classic favorite of mine--I really hope that I don’t have to wait another year for that to happen in person. Of course I’m really involved in RTC’s Risen Kingdom plot, so I’m looking forward to more of that. I’m also excited to see what crazy new stuff people come up with after such a long hiatus.

Sarah:  I’m really looking forward to the next installment of Steve Matulewicz plot, and the Eroewan plot!

Have you concocted any grand plans of any kind for once we can get back to Realms? Events you are planning or things you are going to do with your character? Any secret projects you've been working on that you want to give us a hint about?

Ryan: Yes--

The RCQ team will be wrapping up our event series in a few months and we have BIG plans. We’ve pushed our limits with every event we’ve thrown to date, but we have some truly remarkable ambitions for our finale.

Possible Plans for the Next RCQ Event? (Art/Photo Credit: Ryan Keller)

In addition to that, well… I won’t say anything right now, but maybe keep an eye on a particular weekend in mid-August… depending on the results of the upcoming EEHM, of course.

Sarah: I haven’t made any big plans, but I did write a song during our time away that I’m looking forward to debuting at an event. It’s called ‘Apart’ and it’s about longing to see friends again. When I wrote it, I felt very isolated, and it helped me cope with some of the feelings I had.

Anything else you'd like to say to the Realms about this past year we've spent apart from each other or in anticipation of us seeing one another again?

Ryan: I am genuinely looking forward to seeing each and every one of you again. If you’re reading this and thinking “surely he’s exaggerating and isn’t really talking about me specifically”, you’re wrong. Yes, I’m talking about you, too.

Sarah: This time away has changed my life in so many ways, and I am so grateful that our community has kept connected even when we couldn’t see each other in person. I can’t wait to see you all on the field again!

What You Missed: Blackwood Tournaments IX - Fighting in the Distance

After Action Report
Events of 17-18 July 1021
Blackwood Tournaments IX and Concurrent Interplanar Incidents

My quartermaster Sgt. Westward was not overly happy with the number of items I requested for the journey to Verglas. She has been facing shortages of many materials in her warehouses this year and was reluctant to give up precious goods. I had to insist though, because I have found that this physical projection of myself requires more maintenance as mortal time wears on. A tent in which I can stand up straight and a sleeping surface that is more than a small pad on the ground seem nearly like indulgences, but I hardly regret my decisions no matter how much grief the good sergeant gives me. Aside from that, the weather seers told me to expect rain throughout all of Blackwood, so I asked for a canopy to cover myself and my equipment while resting between tournaments. Unsurprisingly, my wagon was much more full than it has been for previous journeys like this. I did make sure to reserve enough space for Militia Trainee Alias and his gear, who joined me for the ride north.

While I am grateful for the services of the weather seers, I am happy that they were (mostly) wrong about the rain. Thick clouds blanketed the wooded mountains but hardly followed through on their threats of precipitation. The roads were long but thankfully unobstructed by bandits or rogues, so we arrived at the area in which the tournaments were to be held with plenty of time to greet Friends and make camp. Many of the competitors had arrived on the previous night, so the tavern and field were already well-populated.

The tournaments included all of the typical events. Single elimination brackets with best-of-three matchups were the orders of the day. I was personally very pleased with my own performance even though I did not rank well. I did claim second place in the bear pit change-up fights and third place in the “half & a half” event (in truth it was the hand-and-half tournament, but the award parchment has this humorous mistake on it). Two of the engagements were new to me: Saegan’s Challenge was the only team-based event of the day and involved vying for control of four points in the middle of the field while representatives from each side faced off in an endurance drill; and Tao’s Chainsaw Massacre was a painful variation of the traditional single-combatant fight wherein each participant was subjected to a magical leg-mutilating effect at the start of the match. There were other tournaments in which I did not participate, including a projectile gauntlet, quick-fire archery, and improvisational ritual casting. For the relevant events in which I did participate, I used newly-forged swords which I had commissioned from Sir Laika. His craftsmanship is superb and he did a very good job of designing the weapons to my personal preferences. In particular, the oversized hilts were quite comfortable in my grip.

While the combat was proceeding, an unfamiliar being emerged from the woods around the field. I originally took him for Teng Huanesse based on his dress, but he quickly introduced himself as Ambassador Alia (not to be confused with my Militia member, Alias) from the House of Spruce under the Greater House of Fall. Just as these names were entirely unfamiliar to me, the names “Teng Hua”, “Blackwood”, and “Chimeron” were entirely unfamiliar to him. This was shocking given that he claimed to live nearby. As he put it, he heard the sounds of the tournament and walked for about twenty minutes in a southerly direction before coming upon us. According to my knowledgeable companions, that put the Ambassador’s starting location in the northern border region of Blackwood. To further add to our collective consternation, the visitor explained that the lands upon which we were competing were claimed by his House of Fall. Fortunately, he did not seem to take issue with the perceived trespass and continued to be very friendly even after Sir Mathies explained that the land was also claimed by his providence of Verglas (and Blackwood by extension). After more conversation, I found that the Ambassador was completely ignorant of Realms history and nations, and suggested to my companions that he had entered Verglas through something akin to a soft spot. Other discussions were had, but I cannot record their entirety because I was in and out of tournaments for much of it.

After a while, Tempest called for our collective attention so that she could share what she had learned. In summary, it seemed that the Ambassador had indeed come from a different world that was very similar to our own, but more importantly, the two planes now overlapped each other in an unusual and probably-improper kind of way. Tempest put this in terms of a problem that needed to be solved. Naturally, the discussion quickly turned to speculation about what needed to be broken and who needed to be killed in order to restore order. As predictably savage as that may sound, it was actually not far from the truth in this case. Those among us who were most knowledgeable about the situation explained that the best (or at least the most expedient) method for separating the two worlds was to create enough of an imbalance in the area to cause the forces of reality to drive the planes apart. Violence was deemed to be the answer, and there was much rejoicing.

Later in the day, Ambassador Alia left our field and we met another foreigner. I write “we” here, though I admit that I know very little about this individual other than that they were eager to participate in our tournaments and were very strong (at one point the stranger single-handedly tossed a boulder at Drike and crushed Trent’s chair in the process--Trent was not pleased).

When the last of the tournaments wrapped up, we all moved ourselves to a nearby tavern and its large fire pit. I was surprised to hear that our hosts would be holding court before dinner given that the Feast of Blackwood is set to take place a couple of months from now, but I soon learned of their motivations. Among their other business, King Sir K announced that he has received a prestigious invitation to visit another kingdom far to the south (even farther south than the Southern Wastes is my understanding) and expects to be away from Blackwood for the rest of the year; that being the case, he tapped Prince Sir Saegan to lead the kingdom in his absence. To emphasize his trust in the prince, K presented Saegan with his amulet, his magic sword, and a fine marne bearing the heraldry of Blackwood. I will be interested to see if the prince holds another court at the Feast in September.

Dinner comprised such hearty offerings as hot dogs, hamburgers, barbecued chicken, potatoes, salad, potato salad, beans, and… was there something else? I actually can’t remember. All I know is that I loaded up my plate and stuffed my face with some much-needed food. It was quite good, especially the chicken! The staff of the tavern’s outdoor kitchen were very talented.

After nightfall, we were called back into the woods by a series of large and colorful explosions. They kind of reminded me of Night Sky. Being a collection of tournament fighters and spectators, our magical resources were a bit sparse for adventuring, but we donned our armor and equipment anyway and made our way back towards the tournament field. Unfortunately by this time the rain had started in earnest.

On the tournament field--or rather, what we believed to be the tournament field, we ran into crowd of armed temple guards who accused us of committing recent vandalism in their sacred halls. None of our party seems to be aware of such a crime, particularly because the structure in question was sitting on a field which had been notably temple-free during the day. We quickly deduced that this was another manifestation of the interplanar merger and attempted to convince the guardians of our innocence and of our intentions to set things right. They didn’t believe us. Frankly, I don’t really blame them; were I in their position, I too would be skeptical of a crowd of heavily armed strangers asking for safe passage through my lands. Violence-as-a-solution ensued as the temple guards bared weapons to drive us back. I had very mixed feelings about the morality of the engagement, so I called Alias to me and stationed myself as the rear guard. We did not spot anything attempting to sneak up behind us, although there were several times where the tides of battle in the field sent a stray temple guard in our direction. Whenever this happened, I deflected the would-be attacker until they lost interest in a less-than-hostile opponent.

After a long while, the fighting was truly spread across the entire field. It was difficult to determine the tactical situation through the dark rain, but things seemed to be winding down. Since we were no longer being pushed back the way we came, I took the downturn to mean that most of the temple guards had been defeated and that the few who remained locked in combat would soon meet their end as well. In truth, I was less than half right about this; many of the guards had indeed been defeated, but those who remained had survived because they were impervious to our attacks. At the same time, many people from our party had been struck down and seemed to be missing. Once I became aware of this, I fell back to the entrance of the field in an attempt to regroup with my remaining companions. There were only a few of us left and by all measures we did not seem to be much of a threat to the temple guards. One of the guards “strongly encouraged” us to leave and that drove us back against some sort of magical barrier. While keeping the guard at bay, we quickly inspected the obstacle and intuited that only those who were imbalanced by Day could pass (this did not include any of our small group). At some point during all of this, we witnessed another guard drag one of our dead companions through the barrier. It took us a little while to realize that this was likely why so many others seemed to be missing. After a time, the barrier appeared to collapse; to my knowledge nobody on my side of it did anything to trigger this, so I assumed that our “missing” allies had brought it down in some way, even though we saw no sign of them. Hearing quiet around us and fighting in the distance, our group carefully snuck back onto the field. We did come across the same guard who had been pushing us back earlier, but he seemed to finally relent and pointed us towards the sound of our companions.

On our way across the field, we approached the temple. It was a small enclosed building with a glowing star-shaped rune on the wall. I never approached the rune and definitely did not do anything remarkably stupid to it. As such, no further details are required.

The far side of the field was blocked by another magical barrier, though this one too came down after we loitered near it for a while. Our group proclaimed that we were in fact the force that collapsed this and the previous barrier, but this was more due to us going rain-silly than any sort of genuine belief in our meager efforts. Moving forward again, we quickly encountered a large creature that frequently created explosions around itself. Some of these explosions left very wide craters in the muddy ground so we skirted around the thing at a great distance.

At last we met up with more of our party. Between the constant explosions and the pouring rain we had a hard time figuring out what everyone had been up to. Our scattered companions had found several wooden chips with markings on them and as well as carved stones which seemed to be pieces of the totems from the temple. We did not have enough stones to make a complete totem, but we now realized that achieving that should be our collective goal. Around this same time, somebody discovered that striking the explosive creature while one was imbalanced by Water caused damage to the beast. We quickly latched on to this (we were able to gain the imbalance by defeating nearby beings) and removed that threat. I noticed that Sir Rillan in particular seemed to take great pleasure in this.

Eventually we came across a third barrier-- one that required an imbalance by Metal to pass--and a creature that caused us to become imbalanced in that way when it struck us. Through the use of some creative magics, we spread this imbalance throughout our now-larger group and passed through the barrier. Of course, this only took us to a series of yet more obstructions. There was a single creature in front of us and when Lupa defeated it, it retreated through the barrier behind it. We found a hoop nearby which, when we touched it, imbalanced us by Fire and temporarily opened the magical wall. The barrier was unpassable otherwise (no matter our imbalances), so somebody needed to hold the hoop to allow everyone else to advance. The hoop itself could not pass the barrier even while it was open, so the hoop-bearer was left behind--fortunately this also meant that they would be able to let everyone else out when the time came. We repeated this process several more times: Lupa beat up the creature, someone grabbed the hoop, and everyone else advanced. Each hoop imbalanced all those who touched it against a different aspect (believe in order from first encountered to last they were Fire, Earth, Water, Metal, Air). More chips and stones were found at the end of the path.

There was another division of adventurers who explored other paths and also came back with similar pieces. I do not know exactly what sort of challenges they faced along the way.

At last we determined that we had enough materials to attempt to restore the sanctity of the temple, so we returned to the field. I learned that the wood chips were keys to some sort of pattern on the glowing rune; others had already figured out part of the solution, so I kept watch at our perimeter. Sure enough, more guards appeared out of the darkness to defend their holy site. Perhaps I was far too waterlogged to know better, but at the time it sure seemed like the same guards kept appearing in wave after wave (no pun intended) to attack us. Either way, my armor was completely fragged and I was weary from a day and a night of fighting. After an immeasurable length of time, the rune-lock-pickers announced that they had achieved success and opened a wall in the temple. Inside there were four pedestals; two supported stone totems, two were empty. From our collected stone pieces, we rebuilt the missing totems. As soon as those things were in place, the ground began to shake violently and the structure of the temple started to fade from our vision. It was immediately clear to all of us that our goal of separating the overlapping planes was successful and we needed to evacuate the area if we wished to stay on the correct side of the division. With a final burst of energy we dashed back towards the shelter of the tavern. Thankfully all of us made it back in one piece. Many of us shared a few drinks while we dried off and ate cheesy nachos. One by one we drifted back to our respective camps to rest.

I slept very well, though I was sore in a familiar way when I woke up (so familiar in fact that it was almost comforting). It was still raining. I changed into a dry set of clothes and grabbed a shield from my bag to keep away the rain while I traversed the small pine ridge which lay between my tent and the tavern. Over a small breakfast, Sir Tao asked me if I had interest in the second round of tournaments which had been scheduled for the day. On account of the ongoing rain and the state of my corporeal form, I told him that I was willing to fight more, but would not be overly disappointed if the events were canceled. Several of the competitors had already left Verglas and those who remained appeared to share my sentiments, so in the end the tournaments were indeed canceled. Instead we spent the morning quietly socializing in the tavern and waiting for a break in the rain. Awards and prizes were given to those who placed in the events which took place the day before. Finally, the skies cleared for long enough to break camp. By the time the rain returned, I was sheltered by the canopy over my wagon and well on my way back home to Chimeron.

I will be sending my regards to the people of Blackwood who organized these tournaments. Interplanar collisions aside, I had a great time in the Verglas providence and am already looking forward to next year’s contests.

Blast from the Past - Ask Syruss

Editor's Note: first published on Wednesday, April 12, 2017

Ask Syruss

by Cal "Syruss" O'Leary

Sir Syruss is a seasoned adventurer with over 10 years of experience slaughtering undead, charming the ladies, beating up bad guys, frustrating the good guys, and grossing out ladies. SO, if you have a question no matter how bizarre, weird or funny (the funnier the better, then we can sell more issues of the View), consider asking the man who loves to tell you how to live your life; even though no one tells you how to live your life!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Syruss,
What do you suggest would be the best familiar that I could claim for my own? There are so many creatures out there, both magical and mundane, it's so hard to choose! I'll stay away from bats of course, since that seems to be your thing and all, but surely there must be a method to this madness...please advise!
Signed,
Imaginary Menag-er-ie
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Totally Your Real Name,

This is a tough question. I generally found when choosing a familiar I looked for sentient creatures who could have a real conversation. Like a real conversation, you know what I am saying? Sometimes you need to vent and these little buggers are guaranteed to listen. In fact, they have to and they generally won’t be too judgey to boot.

Now people may not know this but our resident Jerky Master Jean Baptiste is also one heck of a trapper. Now ever since he discovered these powerful magical ball traps he has been bringing ALL KINDS of creatures to the castle. Now some of them have been awesome, like the Nacho Cheese Breathing Dragon, the Sentient Giant Apple Tree or the Whiskey Fairies but some of them have been terrible like the Troll of Smothering. This troll just does not understand personal space!!! Everywhere you turn boom there it is, with its constant need for attention *shudders*

Or the Non-Alcoholic Gelatinous Cube. I was excited when JB told me he was working on a jello shot jerky but when I heard the crash kaboom coming from the kitchen only to see JB, three of our petitioners, and half the kitchen staff being digested, well I lost my hankering for jello.

But if you want solid advice follow Syruss’ five simple steps to picking an animal companion, familiar, and other magical creature friends.

More than a mere spell

Familiars are like family members, as loved as the kids, country members and are a lifelong commitment (or until you unlearn magic and forget that you have a Wookie in the Neden Castle). So before you wander down the ‘what familiar to choose path’ ask yourself these basic questions to check if you’re familiar-ready:

Who’s going to look after it? – let’s be realistic about this one, it is going to be you. No one is walking your T-Rex at 4 am when it needs to go potty. No one is going to feed your War Llama except you.

Can we make sure it gets regular exercise? The thing is that your pal is going to want to get out and about often. Once they have had a taste of adventuring then the life of a castle hawk is not so exciting so make sure they can spread their legs/wings/fins.

What will happen to it when you go away? Who is looking after it when you leave it back at home and how will you deal with the sudden loss of supreme power? Magic is thrilling and addictive. Face it, we always want more. That’s why we learn familiar in the first place to gain access to their natural magical abilities. But remember when they are not around you lose that and they lose out on a fun weekend with their best buddy (you!).

Is your country equipped to deal with its needs? Aka do we need fencing? If your lava hound is known for getting out you may not want to reside in a wooded area. If you have Small Banshee you probably shouldn’t live on a Snow Mountain top.

Can you afford a familiar? – Have you considered what it takes to feed a tiger? Have you seen how much Dragon litter it takes to fill up their litterbox?

Woof, woof or meow or RAWWWWWWWWW?

Dogs, wolves and cats, cheetahs, beholders are still the most popular familiar and it is possible to choose a creature that will fit in with your lifestyle, suit your backyard size and the level of maintenance you’re prepared to outlay. But with so many magical creatures and cross-breeds to choose from, trying to work out which one to get can give you a headache. I try to think of what I handle and manage. If the familiar is more likely to kill me rather than aid me I tend to stay away.

Fur, feathers or scales?

If you’re thinking beyond the typical unicorn or rhinoceros then there are plenty of things to choose from: cat, dog, fish, birds, reptiles, bear with a knife, small mammals, trolls, rodents, crab-shark and even insects. These alternate familiar choices can really work in with your lifestyle and home, especially if you don’t have a Self-Repairing Castle! But don’t be fooled into thinking they’re necessarily low maintenance – even a three-headed goldfish (that can’t be taken into certain fishing villages in Corsica) needs regular water changes and feeding that can be more work than a pedigree Creathorne horse!

Ask the familiar store salesperson all about the level of up-keep required before giving in to your first choice.

Are you ready to be a new parent?

Baby animals are almost as cute as newborn elves and raising a dog from a pup is a wonderful experience. But just like dwarven babies, animal bambinos require a lot of care – think potty training a Grebinar only with a dragon! If you’re not up for the extra effort of raising a creature, consider choosing a grown up familiar with a lot of spell experience or buying down for another spell.

Ah-ah-ah-choo!

If you have an allergy-prone country member, or an asthmatic in the family, you’ll need to think long and hard about the type of familiar that’s not going to turn your village into sneeze city. Familiar fur, saliva, and skin flakes are magical and can set off a number of allergic reactions to an extreme and while there are some hairless breeds, these are still not entirely hypoallergenic. Chat to an experienced Sorcerer about the best pet choice for your allergies.

Familiar and Friends

Owning a familiar can teach you responsibility and give you a special and unique companion that simply doesn’t compare to human friendships. Unfortunately, though, some of your country mates may not get along with your familiar, especially if they thinks it’s funny to pull Fido’s ears, tail, wings, or horns on a daily basis. Before you invest in a familiar, remember that they are not an emergency sacrifice on a quest, someone else’s plaything or someone else’s pet’s chew thing…they are your friend and new family member.

In the end, you are the only one who can decide what creature best suits you but maybe this story Nymbous once told me about selecting a familiar can help:

“One day Nymbous goes into a familiar shop and tells the owner he wants to buy a familiar that can do everything. The shop owner suggests a faithful dog. The man replies, “Come on, a dog?” The owner says, “How about a cat?” The man replies, “No way! A cat certainly can’t do everything. I want a pet that can do everything!” The shop owner thinks for a minute, then says, “I’ve got it! A centipede!” Then Nymbous said, “A centipede? I can’t imagine a centipede doing anything, but okay… I’ll try a centipede.”

Nymbous gets the centipede home to Neden and says to the centipede, “Clean the kitchen.” Thirty minutes later, he walks into the kitchen and… it’s immaculate!  All the dishes and silverware have been washed, dried, and put away. The counter-tops have been cleaned and the appliances are sparkling. Even the floor was waxed.  He’s absolutely amazed. He says to the centipede, “Go clean the living room.” Twenty minutes later, he walks into the living room.  The carpet has been vacuumed, the furniture cleaned and dusted and the pillows on the sofa plumped. It even watered the plants. Nymbous thinks to himself, “This is the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen. This really is a familiar that can do everything!” Next he says to the centipede, “Run down to the corner and get me some whiskey.” The centipede walks out the door.  Ten minutes later…no centipede. Twenty minutes later… no centipede.  Thirty minutes later… no centipede. By this point, Nymbous is wondering what’s going on.  The centipede should have been back after a couple of minutes.  45 minutes later… still no centipede!

Nymbous couldn’t imagine what could have happened.  Did the centipede run away?  Did it get run over by a cart?  Where is that centipede?  So Nymbous goes to the front door, opens it…and there’s the centipede sitting right outside. Nymbous says, “Hey! I sent you down to the corner store 45 minutes ago to get me a whiskey. What’s the matter?!” The centipede says, “I’m goin’! I’m goin’! I’m just puttin’ on my shoes!”

Hope this helps. sorry if it doesn’t and remember it’s like Lord Nymbous O’Leary always says “……..What do you want from me? I already told you a story get that pen and paper out of my face!!!!!!!”

Why I want to go: Blackwood Tournaments

I need to pitch Blackwood Tournaments. I don’t need to consider my reasons carefully, I have too many reasons to go to this event.

Blackwood Tournaments was the first event I held in this game. I was a squire to the knights of Blackwood, and I was knighted on the field that day. And I’ve been knighted there since that time.

I’ve spent nights laughing with my friends in the tavern, or around the fire. I have fond memories of yelling “Ashenmark day!” As the fireworks go off against the night sky.

I have memories.

But I also know what’s going on behind the scenes. The absolute bustle of work that the people of Blackwood have been busting out to get this event ship shape for the grand reopening of the realms.

Meetings that seem to go on for maybe 8 hours at a time.

And it is a grand reopening. The realms is returning after a hiatus, for the good of the community. After a year and a half we can come together again, and just enjoy each other. Engage in the game. Engage in the story. Get lost in the magic of LARP.

And the story! Oh the story, I wish I could tell you. That would be tipping my cap a little too far. I’d be giving away the deep secrets then. I think it’s going to make waves in the community though.

It’s been a dream of mine for some time to tell a story that would leave lasting memories for my players. Something they look back on. Like one of the greats. My Blackwood plot staff think I’m mad. Not for wanting to try. But for what happens when I do.

And I’d be remiss to skip over the tournaments! It’s a tournament event after all. I’m excited to get us back out there. To fight off the rust from our hiatus.

To help the community feel safe to come together again.

I’m excited for Blackwood Tournaments.

And I will absolutely see you on the field.
