Why You Should Go, NedenGiving

Why I want to go - NedenGiving -
by Justin "Dresden " Theriault

The holiday season is upon us and that means two things, Hedonism and Charity! These are the times that we indulge in a little extra, enjoy a little more, and settle for a little less. In doing so, we realize how thankful we are to be able to enjoy so much of what we do, and that in turn motivates us to reach out to those who have less, and help them in any way we can. In that respect, I invite you all to join myself and my Neden bretheren at Nedengiving!
Let's be honest, When you think self indulgence you think Neden, so who else could throw a Thanksgiving worthy of the name? Food will be in abundance as we celebrate friends and family, and enjoy heaping plates. Turkey, Ham, Stuffing, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce are just the start - enjoy mouth watering appetizers and delectable desserts that will make you wish you enchanted yourself a second stomach!
There will be games of chance and of skill, fighting, and general merriment. The corn's all been harvested, but the cornhole board is ready. The Turkeys have been slain, but there's still plenty of things that may need killing. Pin the Brain on the zombie, pinata, ring toss, plinko as well as other games will be there for your enjoyment! Don't forget to hit the New Eden Casino and play some cards! There will be a bardic, and in Neden in-house magic items will be going out all feast long!
Most importantly, here in Neden we are running our first Feast Can Drive. Bring as many as you 'CAN'. Can Goods will go to the local Veterans Outreach Center in Haverhill www.northeastveterans.org - VNOC in Haverhill helps with schooling, housing and most importantly food. I cannot stress enough how important it is to give back this time of the year as it's the hardest for many who the complex emotions this time of year can bring, in addition to dealing with hunger and homelessness. Leftover can goods will be donated to Somebody Cares New England http://www.somebodycaresne.org/
Players that show up with five can goods will get $5 dollars off of the door. Any extra can goods will result in tickets for our auction.

In short, show up next Saturday November the 26th, and you'll be thankful you did.

A Tribute to Bob Hinkle

A Tribute to Bob Hinkle

On November 8th, the Realms lost a quiet yet longstanding member of our community. Bob Hinkle, proprietor of the Chaos Dwarf Armory, passed away after a long illness. Bob was a mainstay of the Realms for many years, one of the earliest crafters and one of the most prolific too. But as much as he gave to the community through what he made, his real gifts were the endless generosity, the warm heart, and the unshakable smile he brought to every event he attended. This game has many amazing aspects to it, but I think one of the best is how, very consistently, it brings great people into our lives to make an impression on us that will never fade. Below are just some of the many many stories about the legacy that Bob Hinkle left within members of the Realms.

Bob was an incredibly generous man. He would allow a few of us to come and stay at his house every weekend just because they played Realms with his kids. We spent a lot of time over the Hinkles' when we were younger, and Bob and Irene were some of the most accommodating people I have ever met. - Jeremy "Nighthawk" Grayson

Bob Hinkle: I first met Bob in the early 90’s, reading a newspaper and sitting on the hood of his car as I pulled onto an event site. I start getting my stuff out of my car about three cars away from him and put on my garb, picked up my weapons etc... He has not moved, was just reading his paper. I walked over to him and started talking to him, introduced myself etc… I asked if he was getting ready soon because they are about to do reading of the rules and he will have to sign in and reg. His answer was that his son was already in there, had already signed in etc... “You are going to sit on your car all day?” "I have to read the paper and go pick up some food but pretty much going to be right here all day."

I went in and I mentioned it to Terry Armstrong who I had been hanging around with for a few years etc… His reply was “That is Calaban’s dad, Bob.” Fast forward a few years - I have gotten to know Bob, gotten him off the car hood -  he is now out of the parking lot, he's at a picnic table or in a tavern sometimes in a tabard but still reading the paper. One day I see him talking to a friend of mine, Paul Marcure (Eeldritch Armories) who was just starting a company making leather products. They are talking for a few hours and I see Bob with a pen writing some stuff down so I ask him what is up because I have never seen him write anything down especially on his paper. I thought he was doing a crossword or something...Nope. “I might do some of that leather stuff, it looks cool. That guy over there and I talked, sounds like that leather stuff might be fun.” A few years later Chaos Dwarf Armory - belts, bracers and pouches…

Over the years Bob did not play much. Stephen and I had him NPC for the Lord of the Rings plot we did back in the beginning as the last Dwarf king. Bob donated belts and/or pouches for the kids for years at TOC’s kids quests. He had been to hundreds of events driving his boys and some others to events and staying the entire day patently waiting for the event to be done. Sometimes even Nashua practices at commuter or a feast…About 6 or 8 years ago I was working with a bunch of Young Boy Scouts that wanted to do leather-working. Bob had been pretty sick and his eyes were going so bad he was no longer driving but when I asked if I could bring the boys to see some of the stuff he makes his answer was "Sure, I can do stuff with the boys. Send me the requirements and we will make some stuff." I called Henry to also help because I was not sure how much Bob could actually handle seeing his eyesight and hands were not great...Stellar Day!!! The kids had a blast - Bob went above and beyond. Henry and I really had to do very little, Bob did a great job, showed much more than the requirements and he would not let us give him any payment for leather or anything. So in the 25+ years I have known Bob I have never seen him without a smile on his face ready to help anyone with anything all they had to do is ask. I am very proud to have known him and will miss him every day. -Andrew "Sir Shean" Disbrow

I met the Hinkles, Bob and his two sons Steve and Mike in 1994 at the first ToC, coming in with a small group that didn't know many people. We started to talk, next event we saw each other was later that year at the first QoH, we didn't have a way to get home and there were three of us. Bob gave us each $20, trusting us to pay him back. We had only meet him twice; that goes to show some of the sides of Bob. When his sons weren't around much, he still came. Bob just loved the people and getting to see and chat with everyone, as a plus he loved making stuff. He was always kind to me; he and his wife let me stay over there so much they called me a cousin ("cuz Ray from the city"). He will always be loved, always remembered and he raised two great kids. It's a tough loss - Ray "Radstar" McGuirk

We as a community have had quite the ride in 2016. We’ve made incredible displays of generosity, lending aid to old friends and galvanizing the legacy of a fallen brother. Despite being at the threshold of a new year, it seems 2016 is not finished with us yet. Not long ago Bob Hinkle, a longtime fixture of our community, recently passed away.

I had the benefit of growing up alongside Bob’s sons who are, to this day, friends I consider family. His home was the meeting ground for every game imaginable and he didn’t mind. Everyone was welcome in his home, knocking wasn’t even necessary you could just walk right in. Throughout the years Bob could be found behind a merchant table with his brother and grandchildren. He was even a onetime eventholder! He was a smiling and exuberant contributor to our community. Always excited to listen to the stories of others, offer his opinions on fairness, or talk about his projects and how to make the ideas of players reality. Some of his most easily recognizable works are the signature white belts worn by the Knights of the Eternal Flame and Knights of the Realms which he produced for many years. Not to mention more than 20 years’ worth of belts, pouches, tabards, masks, helmets, bracers and armor sets. Bob's passing marks yet another massive loss for our community. While Bob himself may no longer be with us, his influence on the community and the history of the game will never be far and certainly be remembered for decades to come. - Adam "Damion" Landry

Most kids look up to their parents, as they should. I was lucky growing up because not only did I have my dad to look up to I also had Bob! I met Bob at the age of 8, I hit it off with both Steve and Mike right away and right away I realized that their dad Bob was FRICKIN’ AWESOME! He helped me start my first baseball card collection and taught me what good music was. I was over their house so much, that one day I came home on a Saturday evening and my dad had my bags packed to stay over at the Hinkles' house. As we grew older there were times I would find myself going over to the Hinkle house to hang out with Bob. We would talk about music mostly but we would shoot the shit none the less.

Then I hit the ripe age of 13 and he introduced Steve, Mike, and I to LARPing! If you thought driving to Grafton was a drive, try driving to Belchertown! (This place was so far, they named it after a bodily function). So Bob, would drive us all to Belchertown, which for us Southern New Hampshire kids was roughly 3hrs. When we first started Realms at the age of 13 there were people who didn’t want us there due to our age. Bob being FRICKIN’ AWESOME, told them that he would stick around and make sure we didn’t get into trouble. After a while everyone realized how cool we were and Bob didn’t have to stay. So Bob would drive 3 hours to Belchertown to drop off his kids and their friend so they can do what they loved to do, drive back home 3 hours and then drive back to Belchertown 3 hours to pick us up. He never once complained, he just knew that we loved what we were doing and he wanted us to be happy.

Eventually Bob got a little carried away and started buying all this leather and equipment to make leather goods for the Realms. In fact, there could be a good chance that you are wearing a Bob original. Bob also has showed a handful of people how to do leatherworking so in theory Bob’s memory will always live on.

If you knew Bob, he would always throw you a smile. He always wanted to make sure his family was happy, even if that meant driving 12 hours in a weekend to make sure that his kids and friend were happy. I don’t think Bob knows how I feel about him but I can say my life is better and I’m a better person because Bob was in my life. I wouldn’t have the friends I have today, if Bob never invited me into his home and later on into a Blazer to drive 3 hours to hit people with foam weapons. All I know is every time I see a Harley on the road or listen to music I will think of Bob. I hope Bob is looking over me and my family in that Dwarven Armory in the sky. - Kevin "Kwartz" DeSousa

I Can't Even...

I Can't Even...

       ...Thankfulness

Today marks the beginning of our annual week of Thankfulness. Every year at this time everyone begins thinking of all the things in life that they should be thankful for. The argument board is full of posts like “Thankfulness Day 1: I'm so thankful for my wonderful family...blah blah blah.”. Unrealistic pictures of turkeys adorn the world. I mean, have you ever seen a real live turkey? They are uglier than an orc's arse. People cook and consume great big meals of said turkey and mashed potatoes and gravy and various squashes and that wet bread people call stuffing, when judging by their ever expanding waistline what they really should have eaten was a salad.

Choose Our Own Adventure Part 1

Choose Our Own Adventure

Reluctant Beginnings are Still Beginnings

By Jason (Aeston) Rosa

Every once in awhile, it’s important to take stock. Life seems to move you from one experience to the next and very seldom can you take pause and really consider the chain of events that led you to where you are. A lot of these quests begin with sitting in a tavern. Both alcohol and adventuring leave a bad taste in my mouth so I tend to avoid the places as best as I can. But what can you do? Your buddy meets this hot dwarf-chick, dates her for twelve years until she threatens to decapitate him with an axe if he doesn't propose to her, and then he invites you to his bachelor party. So off to the Bar and Wench I went to celebrate.

Now I won’t say that we were the progenitors of the bar fight, but I won't not say that either. Listen, I never learned Orcish. Everything they say sounds like they’re yelling and angry. Well, three lines of misinterpreted dialogue later and I’m hitting people with chairs in a huge brawl. I guess my furniture-bludgeoning must have been above average because when the dust cleared a severe-looking woman dressed as stereotypically druid-y as you could possibly imagine was offering me a job if I would be willing to beat up on monsters as soundly as I beat up on the bartender. I wish I had said no but the money was too good, and I’m a greedy, greedy man.

So six hours later I had squeezed my increasingly ample gut into my increasingly snug armor, found my good boots, designated such because they had worn away in the least numerous locations, and strapped my greatsword on my back so that it was doing the least permanent damage to my shoulder blades. I found Chloe (that’s the Druid-y woman) and the rest of her group at our designated meeting spot, and met Simon, a rather disheveled looking priest of Aurora, and Kenna, an elf with a pair of swords and a demeanor that said “talk to me just once and I will stab you in the chest.” So there you have reasons, like, one through twelve of why I never really enjoyed going on quests in the first place.

So here I am now. Having taken stock. I’m sure you’re wondering where we’re going and to what end but I’m pretty tapped out on exposition at this point. Its enough to say that Chloe wanted a thing that required a lot of murdering to procure and honestly I wasn’t really listening to most of the explanation anyway because my greatsword was starting to dig into my back really painfully. So we started our journey walking North in the direction of Blackwood and it wasn’t long until we got to the area of country where sheep outnumbered people fifty-to-one. It was late afternoon and the entrance to a large expanse of woods was set before us. The rest of the group started to discuss the various options we had in these circumstances and shortly afterwards began to argue vehemently about those same options. I guess because I’m older they assumed my past experience was somehow valuable to the decision making so, reluctantly, I told them...

What You Missed: Bind the Tide

by Nataliya "Shader" Kostenko

So, here me and the dudes are, arriving outside some fancy mansion wondering just how deep the lore is. The note from the beautiful Fish Lady was dang mysterious, and when our adventuring squad met her in person she wasn’t any less mysterious. Dramatically, her son Shane took off his hood. I guess some of these cats already knew him, but I couldn’t even see the family resemblance. He and his Ma are all like “We need something super important, but we can’t tell you [fools] what it is. So, get in there [and maybe kick some butt or maybe just hit ‘em with some mad diplomacy].” Also by this point I wasn’t feeling too hot, because I guess someone struck us with some WHACK malediction.

So, squad plus Shane rolls in. Inside we got a real swaggy courtyard and a whole line up of guard boyz. I wanted to hang back ‘til the real action started but Katya and Asharn wanted to practice their diplomacy skills so we strolled up to one of them. We were all fast friends, and our new homeboy Hubert told us about how the chain of command works: it turns out, he reports to the Captain of the Guard, who reports to someone, who reports to the butler, who reports to someone else, who reports to someone else, who reports to the Lady of the house. We tried to ask him for the name of this house Lady, but good ole’ Hotdog just patiently explained that he reports to the Captain of the Guard, who reports to someone, who reports to the butler, who reports to someone else, who reports to still someone else, who reports to the stubbornly unnamed Lady of the house. Then I saw some Folkestoners start fighting the guards on the other side of the courtyard, so regrettably, I stabbed Humperdink and everybody got to throwing down.

After finishing off Hugo and his friends, we squadded up with errybody else again. Resident cool lady Freesia said we had two options: sneak or full frontal. Of course, I was ready to bust down the door, but here were K-dawg and A-hole, telling me they wanna go on a Secret Mission, complete with song and everything. So, the three of us took up the front, stealthily sliding into the nameless Lady’s DMs—her dangerous mansion. We didn’t even get through one verse of our sneaking song when more guards spotted us. Naturally, we booked it back toward the door, but it was too late and the bodies were already starting to pile up. In the doorway. Like, they blocked the doorway. We got raised, died, got raised, and died some more until we finally removed corpse squad from the door so reinforcements could ride in. Then they went down like it was real Shandar hours, but Shandar wasn’t even there (where even are you, Stabdad?). At this point Starbro (ps—Kite says where her money at?) assembled the Oaken troops and company to teach them how to properly breach a door.

Still mourning Hudson, we moved deeper into the mansion, properly breaching every door in our path. Next we hit up a tavern in which the party was lit. Gerald maybe Pony Crusher, maybe Bone Crusher (unconfirmed, too loud in room) was a mighty champion—lost every fight, but nothing if not mighty persistent. Asharn went in on every song, arm wrestling and real wrestling. The tavern patrons did shots, and there was a dance-off. Some troll-looking hater stabbed me in the leg like three times, but they didn’t let me throw down for real. After popping Asharn’s rib back in, we went further into the nameless Lady’s nameless mansion bowels.

I think next we found the guard barracks because the peeps in there looked like more of Huang’s buddies. They were pissed we got blood on their mattresses, but it was nothing a little medieval Windex couldn’t take care of. Alas, there was no one left to fetch the Windex because we murdered them all. While I was tearing it up on the battlefield, Hammond Cheese, Gywyth Sord, Freija, and some other homeboys were over at the mystical doohickey responsible for the malediction. Eventually they broke the spell and everybody felt way less WHACK.

Behind the next door was the Lady’s library, complete with dat old scroll smell. Next to the old scrolls there was a runway-ready Demon dude with horns and powerful cheekbones. The only thing cramping his style was a collar (whatever you’re into, dude…). It turned out, though, that he wasn’t into it. Ya girl the nameless Lady and/or her (inferior) cultists had him imprisoned there. We dug around in the scrolls for a while and found some useful info and some less useful info: stuff on Titania, a couple of nice sea shanties, and how to break out the horned man. By this time, the other adventurizzles cracked the flower puzzle on the door and on we rolled.

Demonbro had beef with some Auroran “cultists” who were also chillin’ in this mansion for some reason—so we went to their shrine. The cultists were ticked off that we brought their #1 fan with us; as is the way, fighting broke out. Asharn stood in the back the whole time, singing and drinking sea water to heal everybody.  This fight was a good one, I wish Hussein could’ve seen it.

Finally, the real bass dropped. We were in the vault. As we entered the room, the Lord of the manor greeted us with hostility, since we broke into his house and all. Gotta hand it to this Lady, he honestly had no idea what was going downtown in his own home. She could’ve had so many affairs. Innocent as he was, though, he messed with this crowd, so we ended that sucker (that innocent, innocent sucker). Then, the Lady of the hour finally showed up. Her power-hungriness? WHACK. Her magic flower? WHACK. The way she sold her name to the Fae? WHACK. Folkestone and co.? They’re tight as FUCK. Meanwhile, on the less important side of the room, Katya was trying to join the guards. Unfortunately, Humberhumberhumbert wasn’t there to write her a recommendation, because I killed him. The Captain of the Guard (who reports to someone, who reports to the butler, who reports to someone, who reports to someone, who reports to the Lady of the Manor) came over and told her to drop and give him ten push-ups. Katya can’t even do one push-up, so Asharn stole her thunder and her job. The next minute, though, everyone was out of a job because Folkecompany had destroyed the Lady’s power flower and sent her back to Shane’s fish Ma.

Finally, we emerged from the manor and met back up with Lorelai. She dropped why we had to wreck this Manor Lady in the first place. Turns out, there was a skinless baby. And we were like “Dang, that baby got no skin!” He was Shane’s baby—a selkie born without his selkie skin. When we returned it to his Fishy Grandmama she was like “Thanx.” And we were like “We accept”.

And now she owes us a boon.

In summary:

We arrive at the mansion

·         Swords: out
·         Humphrey: correctly named
·         Guards: slaughtered
·         Lady: killed
·         Baby: skinned

We are forcibly removed from the mansion.
