Battlecry!

 Battlecry!

This is a weekly bulletin for practices in the Realms.  Practices are one of the most important facets to the Realms, it is a place where many people are introduced to the game, as well as a place to enjoy the company and meet new members of the community.  Even if you are not a fighter, it is still a great form of exercise, as well as a way to hone your combat skills, which is an important skill for helping out at events while NPCing.  A lot of what makes a great combatant in the Realms has to do with muscle memory and building a good intuition for combat, which can only happen with consistent practice, so make sure to try and stop by your local practice as often as possible

Featured Drill:  Shot Calling - Armor

This week’s drill focuses on calling armor, one of the more important skills for unlimited combat.  You do not need to be wearing armor for this drill, it is more about the practice and repetition.  The goal of this drill is to help make shot calling become second nature.  One of the tougher aspects for new fighters is calling your armor; it is common for people to get discombobulated after taking several hits and just calling dead.  The best way to avoid this is through repetition, getting to the point where you aren’t having to devote as much of your mental bandwidth to thinking about where you got hit and instead focus on the fight itself.

The drill itself is very simple and requires only two people.  In larger groups you can do it in pairs and swap between rounds if you want to mix things up.  Once paired off, choose weapon combos each of you are comfortable with.  If you are still learning, I would recommend single shorts of hand and a half, as it is less likely to become overwhelming.  Set a timer for 1-3 minutes, reserving longer times for more experienced fighters, or those who also want to train endurance.  For the duration both combatants will fight like normal, however you will call unlimited armor in every location.  The goal is being able to quickly call and remember your armor values as you go.  It is a good idea to throw in a mix of single shots as well as a few double taps to really emulate the feeling of the actual combat you will face out in the field.  This drill should be done for at least a few rounds, and is an excellent drill to start the first bit of practice out with, especially while waiting for people to arrive.  If people are becoming exhausted quickly, you can also let half of your participants take a break every other fight, observing can also be a good way of getting an eye for marshaling.
