What You Missed - Nedenpalooza

By "Potato"

     I heard about a feast happening at the Halls of Neden filled with great food, games, and most importantly prizes. So knowing how lost I tend to get on my travels, I started heading there right after the fun I had helping Timmy. I did manage to get lost completely, but luckily Queen Karma crossed my path with Isoba. So I joined their party to the Halls to get there just in time for the fun to begin. At the door to get in and pay, I was informed they are generously also gathering food donations for those in need. Being that is a cause I hold to heart, I donated what I could as well. I was happy to see the realms gathering for a cause once again.

Now off to see what games there are and the prizes to be won. So many good items up for grabs and I've been told there are chests to be found. There was a poker game going on but I decided not to join. The games were a lot of fun. They had plinko, cornhole, ladder ball, a duck shooter, and toss the beanbags either at pins or in baskets. I played them all, I had a really hard time with turning the pins up with the bean bags though. I kept racking up tickets all throughout the day. While I took breaks between playing the games I went and hunted for chests. I found a good few throughout the day and enjoyed the riches. The next thing I knew the food was out, so I joined my friends to dine.

The first round was snacks and dips to enjoy. I got the buffalo dip with some chips, that was delicious and one of my favorites of the night. While sitting down and talking to friends, I wrote my name down on my raffle ticket stash. By the end of the day with how many tickets I won, I really regretted forgetting my new stamper. I went to the table and spread out my tickets to what I wanted. I overly stuffed the pot for the blue ribbon with tickets. While doing so I found a chest cleverly hiding with the prizes. I found a few chests throughout the day while I played the games and mingled with friends.

While there Isoba and I saw little JB and talked to him a few times. She gave him a little spoon which he named spencer spoon. I gave him a positive potato which he named pauline potato, then tucked them in the brim of his hat. I went off to play more games and find more chests. Before I knew it the feast was ready to be served. From across the room I could smell them, the potatoes.

I went up for a plate of mashed potatoes and a side of stuffed chicken. The potatoes were creamy and delicious. The chicken was good as well. I ate my fill and went off to play more of the games. The more tickets I get, the better my odds for what I want. I played games until the fighting tournaments could start.

I fought in every fighting combo they offered. I lost in all, but that's okay. I fight in them for the practice until I can win them. I Watched the other fights to learn more. I played a few more games before they closed off and put in the last of my tickets. They announce its time for the raffles, time to see what Isoba and I won.

We won so much. I now have almost a full arsenal of weapons, just missing a five foot now. I gave away a dagger since I won four of them. I won almost everything I wanted and then some. But most importantly I won the ribbon I wanted, just need to get some more of them now. I won this blue nerd container for Isoba and she got so excited over it. She too won the cup and a magic staff she wanted. We left here with our hands full of new gear to put to good use. Overall it was a great day in the Halls of Neden. The only thing that could've made it better was if the hall was filled up more like the other feasts I've gone to in the realms. But then again there would've been more competition for the prizes.

Rumors around the Realms December 1025

Rumors around the Realms December 1025

Arken

As the season turns cold in midrealm the mirror distorts reflections further. Any who look in the mirror see themselves with darkness in their eyes and malice in their hearts. One researcher even claimed to hear distant marching coming from the mirror. The garrison at the nearby keep is uneasy and at high alert.

Across the realms

Across the Realms, people have been quietly disappearing without a trace.  There is no pattern to the victims. The hardest part is even remembering who they were...

Qua Taereth Nunna
Reports in the northwestern mountains of Qua Taereth Nunna claim that caravans in the area have had increased attacks from wildlife and the local goblin populations.  Supplies to the remote villages in the area have begun to grow sparse.  Travelers in the area have reported feelings of unease and being more irritable than usual.

Frontier Outside of Eagles Rook

Commotion arises from a small village where a prominent citizen, the location smith, was murdered.  His vast wealth and forge, the economic hub of the area were set to be inherited by his apprentice, however questions over the murder have led to that very apprentice being the primary suspect in the murder.

The Eastern Seas

Several ships have gone missing in the area south of Rathkeale and north of Teng Hua.  Efforts to find them have turned up signs of shipwrecks, but neither survivors nor bodies have turned up.

Why I Joined - Torolf of Blackwood

Lots of player in our game are part of nations. This series gives them a chance to talk about why they decided to join and what it means to them.

Who are you? (IC and/or OOC)
Torolf / Steve Nelson

What nation are you in?
Blackwood

How long have you been a member?
About 9 years

Why did you join this nation?
I first started hanging around Blackwood when I began attending the Nashua practice to improve at fighting. At the time I wasn't intending to join any nation, but I really enjoyed the group, and it became my Realms home

What sets your nation apart from others?
Blackwood has a real diversity of voice when it comes to styles of roleplay and types of characters. But also strikes a good balance between playing hard and having fun. And at the end of the day is a really supportive group

What makes you proud to wear your nation’s colors?
Blackwood is a well-respected nation with many pillars of the community. On the field we are a force to be reckoned with, and we have members with a lot of different skills and talents. There is a lot to be proud of

What’s the most powerful moment you’ve experienced as a member of your nation?
One moment that stands out in my memory is the first time I fought among Blackwood at the nations war. I had fought in plenty of line battles, some of comparable size. But that was the first time as a member of a group that large and coordinated. There have certainly been plenty since, but that one stands out

How does your nation help you become the person you want to be?
I owe a lot of what I've achieved in Realms to Blackwood. From training and experiences, to opportunities and support. I suspect I'd be in a very different place with Realms if I had not joined them. In fact I might have moved on from it some time ago if they hadn't helped re-kindle my enthusiasm for Realms several times over the years

What should someone do if they want to join?
Talking to Tao would be a good start ;)

Winter Revelry Announcement

Hello Dearest Adventurers!

As the nights chill and seem to last longer, I’ve sent my fellow crows to the far corners of the land to collect things most wonderful for a day of Revelry this Winter! The night may be long, but there will be much to get up to at this year’s celebration! Many activities including helping our darling mimic discover their name; I hear you all have been sending in names and the top choices will be made available for you to vote upon your arrival at the hall.

Once you have entered the warm hall on what I presume will be a chilly evening, you can warm up with a drink from the fantastic bar and some delicious masterfully crafted food. And if you love food, you simply must decorate a gingerbread person or perhaps try your hand at the dessert competition which I hear is Ugly Sweater Themed! The most over the top and gaudy, but still delicious dessert will win quite the prize. Time to break out the luster dust and sprinkles, I cannot wait to be captivated by each and every one of them!

If you don’t have a sweet tooth, that’s alright too, the Adventurer’s Guild will have harrowing quests up and running for you to take a whack at. Or maybe you like to gamble your shinnies at the casino or take on the best of the best at the Stacked Deck Tournament. For the bards among you, there will be some lovely caroling to get everyone into the spirit. And of course gifts for all from yours truly and a visit from Pater Yule for our younger adventurers.

For even more presents, you can participate in the Gift Swap, always a delightful time. And make sure to bring your green and gold so that you can shop at these fabulous vendors: Wulfemoon Studios, The Wandering Potato, Rowan's Rarities, Starry Knight Crafts, Nestra's Treasures and Treats, and Ethereal Hive Crafts AND participate in the incredible charity ticket auction to support House of Hope!

In addition to all of that, we will be on the look out for this year’s Lord/Lady/Magistrate of the Festival, someone who encompasses the season’s spirit in all that they do. More on that in my next missive. Thank you for letting me express all my excitement in this letter to you; I am thrilled to gather with you again this year and to have a delightful day of revelry!

Humbly Yours,

Cornix

Communities Helping Communities

I’d like to take a minute of your time and share with the Realms community something that happened very recently. Back in September, we held our annual Feast of Blackwood at Camp Joslin in Charlton. Lisa Laconto who is the director of Special Events for the Barton Center for Diabetes Education who owns the camp, approached me in the kitchen during the feast. Lisa had explained that her food service director and assistant had left their employment with the camp the prior week and that the camp was in a bind for their upcoming annual fund raiser in November and that the cheapest caterer they could find on such short notice wanted to charge $65 per person for just the dinner service. Lisa asked if we would be interested in running the kitchen for their fundraiser. It would entail serving upscale appetizers, entrees and desserts for 200 people.

I told Lisa that I would get back to her but wanted the ability to put together my own kitchen staff. After our feast, I reached out to those within our community who have worked kitchens with me and knew would help me support this other community. Everyone who I reach out to said yes. My kitchen staff consisted of Liz Butler, Ben and Jana Greene, Dani Lacasse, Matt Hewitt, Lynn Butler, Kristopher Payne and myself.

With crew selected, contract signed and 5 weeks until showtime, we set out to create an upscale menu that was highlighted by scallops wrapped in bacon and a large charcuterie board (with thanks to Jason Rosa for sharing some knowledge). Although in this article I focus on the kitchen as that was my job, the focus for the night was on the fund raiser and the camp trying to surpass last years goal. For me this was simple, treat it like an event and put on the best menu I could with as little spent as possible as every penny saved went to the camp. In the end, I was under budget by more than half of what was given for food and overall with our donated time as the caterers, we saved the camp just under $13,000, which directly goes to the camp. The Chairman of the Board introduced himself to us and thanked us for the best food they have had in years and for being not only under the budget given but for being below last year’s food budget as well. By the end of the night, the camp had their best fund raiser ever by more than doubling this year’s goal.

Being able to do this was very meaningful for me as we all have family and friends that struggle with diabetes. I never would have been given the chance to do this or have the amazing friends who came to my call if it weren’t for the Realms. In the end, it was one community helping another community.

Matt Butler

P.S. We have been asked to run the kitchen for next year’s fund raiser

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Hi friends! Dani here hijacking this (sorry Matt) tagging in on this article for a moment, but just for a moment I promise. While Matt has taken the time to highlight his kitchen crew and the incredible fundraiser event itself in this wonderfully written article, I would really like to take a second to stress just how astounding it is that Matt was able to pull this off. For those of you who have planned and hosted grand feasts or served really any food at and event in the realms before you know this, but for those who haven't, this task was no small feat especially while being the third large scale food event Matt led this year in about a seven month span. With less than two months prep time Matt was able to form a full kitchen staff, curate recipes and a full menu (printed and framed) which needed to be fully vetted and approved by the camps board and execute it near perfectly. And while there was a great team behind him, what is a team without a leader at its helm? Without Matt's guidance, expertise and patience during the entire weekend (yes weekend, while the event was on Saturday he was there Thursday evening until Sunday morning prepping and then cleaning up) we certainly wouldn't have been able to make it all come together as it did without him. The bond Matt has formed with Lisa and the entire Camp Joslin community this past year has lead us to an incredible experience that doesn't come often. So with that I just wanted to take this moment to say thank you Matt, for this opportunity and so much more.

What You Missed: Neden Questing - Happy Birthday Timmy (Contrasting Perspectives)

By Emma "Companion" and Zack “Bubbles O’Sudsie” Koval

What you missed: Timmy's birthday (Companion's POV).

We arrived on the mouth of what would soon be a long trail battle. Upon arrival we were informed that Timmy had gotten his birthday stolen, and we would need to get it back before sunset or else he would lose it forever. We were told this happened right after he finished his homework, which his mother said that if he did not complete he would not celebrate his birthday, and presumably unprompted. After following through the direction that was indicated that Earl von Hurl the Duke of Puke went through we were met with a gate, a henchman with riddles and "stuff" blocked our path.

There we got the first sighting of the Duke, as he told his henchmen to not let us pass.

We ended up getting through by solving riddles, and engaged with an enemy line.

They were covered in inches worth of filth, and sometimes patches would come off of them and hit our weapons and equipment, rending them unusable until we scrubbed it off.

We fought them foot by foot, until we arrived at a small clearing, where we met the angel of cleanliness. I chose to try to converse with the duke to try to figure out the truth of the matter at hand.

Upon talking with the Duke further I was able to determine the other side of the story.

Timmy did not want to complete his homework, which he had put off to the last possible moment, and as such he set up a ritual and called the Duke to do it for him. However in exchange he lost his birthday. It was also revealed tht this was not the first time this had happened, however this time we had gotten involved.

Since this was a contract that both parties agreed upon, and had both given given consent (Timmy had agreed to give up what mattered most to him), this was not an issue that should have been resolved with force. I therefore tried to negotiate the price of our intrusion, and Timmy's birthday. The price that I bartered it down to was four birthdays (which would be four of five of my birthdays [birthday is the closest word for it in english]) and the death of the angel of cleanliness. However, as I was too slow to rile people, this plan was not executed. However we managed to learn that the Duke was able to be negotiated with. And, that he was growing more amenable to deals as time passed.

As we progressed in our venture we eventually found the condition to return the birthday by force: blow out the candles on the cake before the sun sets. We also learned why the Duke wants birthdays: because he is able to leave his imprisonment for the day, allowing him a semblance of freedom.

Knowing that we were closing in to the cake, still wanting him to have a bit of freedom, as he seemed lonely, and knowing that a lot of our casters had expended a bunch of their spells in prior encounters, I bartered two of my birthdays for spell resets.

When we reached the cake there was one final obstacle in our path: the vice principal of Timmy's school. Which used magic to freeze (time based, not temperature) all but one of us at a time and would quiz that person. If the person answered successfully they would be allowed to fight them.

Once we bypassed this hurdle Timmy had to answer some questions on his own to bypass a magic barrier, and he blew out the candles on the cake a split second before getting killed.

Once raised Timmy gave us the hat off his head, explaining its properties.

Upon putting it on:

    1. It makes you invulnerable to everything

    2. It makes it so that you cannot wield weapons

    3. It lowers your intelligence to a miniscule ammount (to the extent that you cannot cast spells with it on)

We used the hat to retrieve stolen items that the Duke intended to vanish off with, and then he explained that he cannot come with us any further. I attempted to get him through with a divine aid, and it worked to an extent. I can now call upon him on the two days that I traded him.

What You Missed - Neden Questing: Happy Birthday Timmy (Bubble's POV)

I am not what one would call an active adventurer, but after the call went out to adventurers about a particularly gross Fae taking a small child's birthday, I knew I needed to be there. Both to help wash away the muck of this mean Fae, and whatever filth the small child happened to generate. Humans, especially small ones, are gross.

As everyone gathered, little Timmy explained that a fae named Earl Von Hurl, the Duke of Puke had taken his birthday, along with all of the stuff for his party including the presents and cake. He even had a lollipop he wasn’t allowed to lick (which helped reduce the sticky factor considerably). The Adventurers, galvanized by the sad story, set off to get it back by the magical deadline of “Fundown” following Timmy’s lead and magical guidance.

As we cross a bridge and a soft spot into Faerie, we arrive in what must be the most filthy section in the entirety of Faerie. It makes me want to jump in a tub of ammonia just thinking about it. Regardless we came across a gate, with a snotling (the term I remember for these slovenly fae) in front. Repeating orders whispered to him by a fae hiding behind a tree on the other side.

We had to answer some “Riddles and stuff” to get past this gate. The main thing I remember here was that one riddle was hyped up as “A Doozy”, and then Lord Sir Tao answered “A Doozy” to it. Even though it was not the intended answer, when pointed out that they had said it would be a doozy, they kept their word and accepted it.

The fae whispering orders soon revealed himself as Earl Von Hurl, a truly nasty piece of grime, Lord and prisoner of the lands we were in. Von Hurl, knowing we needed to get the birthday back by Fundown, did everything he could to slow us down, from making us fight minions, covering us with heavy grime, setting up a barrier between two trees and attempting to gaslight us into thinking we could not just walk around it, and other such things.

During this time, we learned more about this Duke of Puke. Firstly, his powers of filth is so strong that while covered in his filth, Von Hurl and his minions were immune to Fae Stones and the Bane until scrubbed clean. Then we learned that he ruined the dress of the True Court’s Duchess of Beauty, which is what earned him his exile to his little land of mire. Then, there was the awful and sad reality that technically, the Duke made the deal with Timmy fair and square as Timmy had summoned him to get someone to do his homework, and the phrase: “For your birthday, I will do your homework” means VERY different things to a slow human child and a timeless Archfae. Lastly, the most dire and awful piece of information we learned, was that EARL VON HURL CAN GRIME SOAP! WHOLE BARS OF SOAP! It was horrendous.

Luckily I had come with a lot of soap, and it was at this point I got to meet one of my personal heroes, Clean Living: The Inventor of Washing Hands! Clean Living is an angel under the domain of poison, or more specifically of antiseptic materials and hygiene, and currently serves under the Dark One, returning putrid things to the All. Clean Living decided to show up and help us on this quest, due to his perfectly reasonable hatred of the hygiene habits of the snotlings, helping us by making a more powerful soup that worked on the spiritual and on the real.

To make this soap, the party worked on killing and bringing corpses of the snotlings to myself and Potato, and we cut open the bodies to harvest the fat needed to make soap, which was then rendered down with added water and lye, and stories from our fellow adventurer’s pasts to scent the soap, including a powerful story about her troubled past from Isoda. This soap was able to almost immediately wash away the grime with no effort to scrub at all! Clean Living gave me another gift to aid in our quest: Scour: The Holy Soap dagger, once used to punish blasphemers in times long past, was now to be used to wash away the ick as we try to forcibly undo a deal between a Duke and a child.

Eventually we get to a deep swamp of grimy muck, that contained Timmy’s presents and a bunch of Crocs, and an elder Croc with an alarm clock in its gut. With the power of holy soap and some friendly undead who didn’t need to breathe, and Gale’s helpful alligator mount, the presents were retrieved after much struggle. While I don’t know what happened before and after, I did briefly exist in this swamp just long enough to drown in grime. I need to bleach that memory from my mind...

But anyway, within the presents were a bunch of Timmy’s homework. Omri led the charge in doing the homework, though we all had to contribute, because we needed to help invalidate the deal Earl Von Hurl and Timmy had made, with the other half of the deal being late handled by Companion coming to a deal with Von Hurl selling him two of the five birthdays she had for some reason I don’t understand. Time. Blech. One homework problem of note was “What is the difference between Dragons and Dinosaurs?” and my answer of “None per Alexander Cecil” was marked as correct.

After a little bit of travel, we met some sort of Teacher demon, forcing us to take the test that the homework was supposed to prepare us for, and would give out “Pop Quizes” to the party members. Only those who had answered one correctly could harm the creature. Once the test was slain, we pushed past the last of snotlings and arrived at the last barrier before the cake, a test Timmy had to answer himself. It was hard for him, but with a little bit of help from us, Timmy gave the correct answers until the final question, which was not multiple choice, but a practical exam. He had to do a ritual for Prophesy to get the recipe for his birthday cake. Omri and some others helped Timmy assemble and cast the spell, at which point Timmy got his birthday cake and birthday back just before Fundown.

At this point we were able to leave Von Hurl’s feculent domain, deal undone and all parties getting what they wanted. Timmy turned 9ish, the Duke got two birthdays as specific days he could escape his prison on a technicality, and I got to meet my hero and get a powerful blade of sanitation.

Signed

Bubbles O’Sudsie

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On an out of character note, this was genuinely one of the most fun quests I have been on in the realms, this plot staff did an excellent job making a light hearted and silly quest for us to do, the wonderful NPC’s fought to their role excellently, and Tim Suitor was a scummy and filthy and expertly played antagonist as Earl Von Hurl. Mine Falls, while definitely a northern site, was a great site for a one-day quest. The downside of having to let normal folks pass us by on the trail was not that bad of a burden, for a cheap but very nice site.
And as a final note, the soap making thing we did IC was complimented by Ethan making real OOC soap on a camp stove, scented based off the stories we told. We got to take it home.
Rumors around the Realms NOvember 1025
Pax Tharkus
All across the Realms crows have been spotted carrying all manner of gifts in their talons. They seem to be converging in a snowy glade where a fancy crow is inspecting the presents.
central Chimeron
Something has been chopping peasants and foresters to bits.  It appears that nothing has been taken from the corpses.
General Realms
Residents of a remote hamlet are looking to relocate their homesteads, as their livestock is constantly stolen, their forest bereft of game, and their fields overrun with aggressive flora.  The scouts that have been sent to look for better conditions fear they are pursued by monstrous beasts.
Why I Want To Go - Nedenpalooza
By: James "Tao" Murphy
I think I have been to every one of these. I have gone by myself, and I have gone with friends. The great thing that happens in both cases is that I meet friends there as well.
This crew knows how to put on a show. I have played poker there, I have played ball rolling games, I have fought in tournaments, I have spun a giant puzzle wheel. I have watched my magic cask fill with cider. I have eaten great food, (Even the year of the cranberry incident). I expect to see some amazing things in the museum, I expect to hear some bardics, I expect to enjoy great food, and amazing companionship. I expect to win prizes!
Hope to see you there.
Sir Tao,
Lots of titles
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey, James here, I have always had a good time at this event. It’s a rare Sunday event, its good food, a very cheep bar on the main side of the building (that is CASH ONLY), it has sideshow games that I do not see anywhere else, it’s has a ticket auction with just some amazing stuff. Tickets you get by playing games or donating food or both. And that speaks to my heart. If you stop by a supermarket on the way there and donate at least 5 cans you will get $5 off the door price. And You will also get tickets to win prizes. Why I want to go, fun, food, good times, great cause.
What You Missed - Feassst of the Gorgon
 By Paul "Grindin" Tilton
A new opportunity to learn! Cultural exchange! What a wonderful opportunity to spend the day at SnakeU and our friends in Zimeya. If I was to succinctly sum up the experience: Snekromancy rules, all other departments drool.
But I’m getting ahead of myself. After a welcome by 3 professors to SnakeU, we took a brief and inscrutable questionnaire to sort us into three houses: Snekromancy, Snistory, and Snarkeology (Unfortunately the study of artifacts, and not snide remarks). That really set the tone for the level of puns we were subjected to throughout the day. Having been sorted, we were led indoors to our departments’ tables, where we read some background on Zimeyan culture, got to see the Ziggurat in the center of the hall, and received our first assignments.
Snekromancy was the first out of the hall, and down into the catacombs. We delved into an ancient crypt, filled with puzzles, hidden runes, moons, and the need to complete a ritual. Alas, that ritual was not completed successfully by the end of our hour’s time, but we sure did get close. Along the way we received our silver Artifact of Ascension, and a smattering of energy, both of which we needed to try and ascend the Ziggurat.
In our first break, we were fed soup! A delicious soup that some people had some level of moral quandary about, but I was focused more on the spinning of the Artifact of Ascension, so that we could clearly show everyone the excellence of Snekromancy. Unfortunately, we had not gotten much energy, and fell behind. I knew that if we tried harder next time, that we could make up the difference.
Our next adventure was delving into some catacombs. We freed some spirits via some puzzles, we energized some wisps and made them fly, then the diseased and possessed guardian of the catacomb was accidentally thrown into a lava river. Then we used the wisps to collect a box out of the lava river, in which was the spirit familiar of the aforementioned guardian. Realizing our unforeseeable mistake, we retrieved his body, performed the well known ritual of singing twinkle twinkle little star, and exorcised him. I truly wish Gary the best at all his future Catacoomb defending ventures.
The next break was a “salad” course, of spring and sushi rolls. I’m unaware of any moral objections to this course. And of course, this was when the Snistory team struck a blow against Snekromancy. Whilst traversing the Ziggurat, we fell down a snake, falling even further behind. And then… Snistory played a card that caused that setback to be even worse. Little did they know, that was the most deadly mistake they could have made. I declared war, they argued that they “had” to play the card, because they bought it (patently false). By the end of our second break, Snekromancy was far behind our competition, and things were looking grim.
Our final assignment was doing something with a burial ritual in another cavern. Honestly, I did not interact with anything, other than trying to hold off an unending assault of undead. Ask Swift if you want more details.
Which gets us to our final break period. 3 Delicious goops were served. Special shoutout to the staff of SnakeU for making too much food, so that I could bring leftovers back to Highmarket and keep eating it all week.
Our unparalleled success on our final mission (I assume) procured the Snekromancy department much energy. Some may say it was because the spirits of the land felt bad for how far back we were, but I know it was based solely on merit. Armed with so much energy, and such a distance to traverse, we knew there was only one move: Prevent Snistory from winning. We purchased cards in the hopes of finding detriments, and detriments did we find. We halved their movement, we stole energy, and hoped for them to land on a snake so that we could send them back a further 5 spaces.
With dwindling energy reserves, both our friends in Snarkeology and the evil Snistory departments neared the top, but could not quite finish the deal, as they needed exact numbers to summit the Ziggurat. I glanced back at our massive pile of energy (some of which were stolen, but hey, they were ours now). My mental math was quick: we had done enough to the competition, and it was time to make a break for the top. And sprint up the Ziggurat we did. As we passed the final snake, we knew that nothing but unfortunate dice rolls could stop us. Each member of Snekromancy took a turn spinning, hoping for a 2 to finish our ascent. On our second to last roll, I took another spin… and managed to land a 2! Against all odds, and the treachery and deceit of the Snistory department, Snekromancy had emerged victorious. The Ziggurat opened, and spilled out its various treasures, which were quickly shared about the room, as all rivalries were forgotten in the revels of treasure (Much love to our yet again friends in Snistory).
A wonderful time was had by all, even if there were a few rumblings about burning the cooks at the stake for some perceived slight.
Why I Want To Go - Neden Questing
By: Dustin "Gwynplaine" Mack
Ah Neden, a wretched hive of scum and villainy… no wait, that’s that other place. Neden is a land of undead and hijinx. I always have a fun time visiting Neden. Hydration challenges, fighting pizza monsters, and surviving hordes of undead. But this time, we’re going for a party.
Why do I want to go? It’s my clownly duty to attend little Timmy’s birthday. This way, even if this Earl Von Hurl bozo gets away with stealing Timmy’s party, at least he’ll still have a clown. But that’s not gonna happen. Homie don’t play that! We’ll get the party back from that joker. So come join this insane clown’s posse and help little Timmy get the birthday he deserves. It could be another 27 years before you have this much fun.
OOC: Neden puts on really fun events with lots of humor and spirit. I have never had a bad time at one and I go to as many as I can. I don’t know what Ethan has in store but I’m confident it’ll be entertaining. And it’s the last real questing before that cold white stuff comes back.
What You Missed - Black and White '25
A few years back the adventurers of the lands brushed against the veil of death for fae, where they fought eternally in Tir Na Nog as their reward. This day of Black and White they returned, the boundaries marked with flowers. Along with fighting them adventurers could solve other problems in Fae.
Leon Hunura - Adam Huneke, when asked what others missed from Black and White:
"Well, I recall fighting fae spirits (friendly, but really wanted to fight) that were leading us to a village who's name was "lost in the wind." once we got closer to the town, we started fighting that wind, and it dropped various pieces of names, way too many for them all to be included in the town name. When we got to the town we also saw a fae-metal structure with the symbol/rune for The Inventor on it. It had two hatches that were sealed shut, Kiddo used piercing on one of them and was able to grab a letter from inside. (I don't remember what it said, but it was in futhark and was from 'X'). Later, at night, I and a few others revisited the structure and we learned it was a diving bell. There was also something going around regarding the Curse Rune ((Midoru)). I don't think I can say they're not related, but I don't know how they would be. I don't know if we ever resolved what was going on with the town's name."
Blue wasn't killing everybody? Shocked everyone
At Fae Court Raindrop was Knighted to Knight Protectors of Fae and now goes by Dame Raindrop.
By Josh "Silva"
"The demon Seeker was found lurking around after a brief confrontation they second chances away leaving behind a series of skulls found to contain imprisoned souls. It was found out that the souls were being collected in order to be fed to a spider-themed demon. With the assistance of James Swift and Alpacasaurus the souls were freed and sent to their rest."
Much fun was had by all, as is the norm at Black and White, and Death claimed no lives.
What You Missed - Splinter in the Heart of the Earth
By Sarah "Evitta Jainrose" Fournier and Aiden "Ace" Emeric
A Splinter in the Heart of the Earth was a fantastic adventure, let me share my perspective on what you missed!
I arrived at the Church of Aurora on All Hallow’s Eve to see a rousing celebration had already begun. The church was filled with everything a good party needs: a bustling bar, an assortment of food, a casino, music, and a crowd. A magical aura emanated throughout the land, allowing the attendees to shape shift at will, so there were many entertaining creatures to behold, most notably a gigantic chicken. The Blackthorn Bar, operated by Alder with assistance from Grarr served up a wide variety of hot and cold drinks, all equally delicious. I found myself immediately drawn to the Chimeron Casino table, where I played Let It Ride to pass some time.
After a short while, the Queen of All Hallow’s Eve [the Hallowed Queen] made her entrance, formally welcoming us to her party. She excitedly introduced us to a famous bard she hired for the occasion, a quirky character named Merv. Merv had prepared a poem for the celebration, but as they concluded the performance with a chant of “Bagagwa, Bagagwa, Bagagwa!” [editor's note: The name Bagagwa had been used in the poem three times to act as a summoning tool by calling the name thrice innocuously], a figure appeared out of thin air and snatched the Queen’s crown off of her head! In shock, the Queen begged us to chase after the fiend and retrieve her crown, for all of her power was stored within it. Of course, us adventurers grabbed our swords and headed out into the night.
Within just a minute of walking, we ran into hostile creatures covered in candy. Since I was told there would be trick or treating on this night, I had a candy bucket equipped, and as we downed the creatures, I said “trick or treat!” and looted many-a-sweet off of them.
As we continued our journey down the path, we discovered a wizard alchemist in need of assistance. He wished to complete his potion, but was in need of a few ingredients including a fallen star, a pumpkin grown from a soul, a gift freely given, and a light. We excitedly went on our quests to collect the items, which didn’t take too long.
After we had gathered all that was needed, he informed us that he could not stir the potion without his special broom stick. We searched high and low for the broomstick, with trick or treaters harassing us for candy all the while, and discovered it in the hands of a 7-year old candy seeker. I asked if he would be willing to trade some candy for it, but he had grown quite attached to it. Someone else resorted to violence, and got final striked for their treachery. I asked the child why he liked the broom so much, and he said it made him feel safe, and there were scary things in the night. I assured him that if he lets the alchemist borrow the broom for just a moment, we would be able to make the land safe again. He begrudgingly agreed to give the broom back, but only if we agreed to play tag with him… I’m not a runner but I chased that kid down and tackled him to the ground. Unfortunately that wasn’t enough and he wanted to play 2 more times…  I was too out of breath for that…
Anyway, someone played his game with him again, retrieved the broom, and brought it back to the alchemist. With relief, the alchemist took back his broom, and stirred the potion, illuminating the cauldron in beautiful colors. Finally, the potion was ready for consumption. As the questing party ate the potion (which became cupcakes), a commotion could be heard in the distance.
Merv had manifested before us, in a pentagram circle with spooky lights surrounding them and the Queen’s crown upon their head. Quickly, Styx disrupted all of the lights, and Merv was vulnerable, but knocked us back every time we tried to approach. Then seemingly out of nowhere, the Bagagwa appeared and swallowed Merv whole! It was quite the sight. The Bagagwa was a massive presence with a pumpkin for a head. We attacked the Bagagwa to no avail; its body was invulnerable. Finally a blow landed on the pumpkin head, and we realized what must be done. We rained strike after strike on that pumpkin head, until it exploded into a pile of candy! We picked up all of the candy, and the Queen’s crown, and made our journey back to the Church of Aurora to celebrate our win with drinks, hot food, and lots of socializing.
When we rose in the morning, we were greeted by a worshipper of Gaia by the name of Aspen. He informed us that Gaia had graced him with a vision the night before. A shard of the Progenitor’s Blade permeated her heart, causing all manner of chaos. The creatures of her grove were inflicted with uncontrolled growth magic, and we needed to retrieve the shard from her heart to grant Gaia and her creatures relief. Aspen led us to Gaia’s Grove within the basement of the Church of Aurora, where we found a seal with a symbol of Gaia. In order to open the seal, followers of Gaia needed to complete a ritual. Within the questing party, I was the only one who called themselves a follower of Gaia, but Traveller had recently become acquainted with her, and had vowed to serve her for a year, so they stepped up to the plate to complete the task. I stood for nature, Aspen stood for healing, and Traveller stood for the hunt, three of Gaia’s domains. We used our collective magics to open a crater in the earth, and one by one we jumped in.
We landed in the Chimeron city sewers… filled with rats. It was absolutely disgusting and Orion, if you’re reading this, please hire some sanitation workers. As we slew rat upon rat, we realized that to continue through the sewer tunnels, we would need to collect keys. It took forever, but we unlocked each tunnel one key at a time. Magnus and Kitty were integral to keeping the quest going, and diligently unlocked the majority of the tunnels. At one point, a few adventurers were sucked into a sewer rat abomination ball, and started hunting down the rest of the questing party. Nearly everyone was consumed and I watched on in horror. The sight of 20+ bodies congealed into a ball and rolling swiftly towards me honestly should’ve caused nightmares, but we persist. After a lot of stabbing, everyone was freed from the rat ball and we resurrected them to continue our quest.
When we broke out of the last tunnel, we were greeted by cave miners who needed our help getting their pickaxes back from some rude goblins. Sounds like an easy task, but it was rough! The goblins had a crazy power to make our limbs extremely heavy and practically unusable. The only way to break that curse was to hack away at our limbs 200 times. After getting afflicted with that a few times, I was wiped out, but eventually we were able to get the pickaxes, and get on our merry way.
Next we encountered a rushing underground river. Luckily we didn’t have to make our own boats, there were some ready for us! I hopped into a boat with Avendar, Pawldo, Nestra, Niamh, and Second, and we quickly sailed away. Goblins stalked us and tried to attack from the shore, and boulders fell from the caverns above us! Thankfully we escaped relatively unscathed, and made it to our next destination with the rest of the group.
At this destination, we were met with a pillar that had 5 empty seals, each inscribed with words written in High Auroran. Thank Gaia we had Magus Margaret with us! She didn't know what the words meant; she isn’t fluent in High Auroran. But she is super smart, and eventually worked out that the words were Birth, Growth, Life, Death, and Decay. The cycle of life. Makes sense!
Stone golems resided by the pillar, and told us that in order to pass, we must unlock all of the seals. Others in the party taught the stone golems about the joys of life, witnessed birth and witnessed growth. I spent most of my time speaking with an elder named Boulder, who had a deep connection with Gaia. Boulder told me that in order to unlock one of the seals, a great personal and permanent sacrifice was required. At this point, my very close friend and fellow Gaia devotee Twenaria arrived. After some contemplation, Twen and I decided that we would each sacrifice 50 soul points to unlock the seal. Others within the questing party were also willing to take on a similar burden on a smaller scale, and I am very grateful to them, but the sacrifice had to be larger than we initially gathered. This was a difficult and yet easy decision for Twen and I. We would both do anything for Mother Gaia. Our sacrifice was deemed worthy, and the seal of Death was obtained. Once Twen and I placed the seal, we sought out where many of our fellow adventurers had headed off to; a graveyard in the distance. This was where we’d find the seal of Decay.
The graveyard was swimming with undead, seemingly impossible to keep down. Twen and I called out to Mother to smite the unnatural foes, and we had a realization: we had to kill undead beings next to their gravestones to end their cycle of undeath, and begin their cycle of decay. We relayed that information to the rest of the group and quickly all of the undead were smote. Well, all except Zombithy (sounds like Timothy except he’s a zombie). Zombithy had been enslaved, I mean befriended by Jasper and Jasper had run off! So we shouted across the way to Jasper that he had to sacrifice his new friend, and that’s what happened. With all of the undead slain, the final seal was obtained and we were ready for one more ritual.
With Twen, Raindrop, Styx, Kitty, Traveller and I surrounding the pillar, we called out to Gaia once more, sharing our tales of the cycle of life and swearing to remove the Shard of the Progenitor’s Blade from her heart. With a whoosh, the 5 seals lit up, and the chamber was opened.
Within Gaia’s Heart, Gaia made her appearance. We approached her in awe. The feeling of seeing her before me was nearly indescribable. A joy unlike any joy I’d felt before. Like the first sip of the best hot apple cider after a long day in the cold. Or the feeling of a hug from your closest friend, only 1000 times better. She was adorned with beautiful fall leaves, and the kindest smile. But I couldn't help noticing a corrupted aura about her. The shard of the Progenitor’s blade had been spreading rampant growth uncontrollably, and she was unable to contain it because it is not of this plane. She asked us to retrieve the shard from her heart, and the questing party enthusiastically agreed to complete the task. We bid Mother farewell, and went off into the night.
Within the dark, we were met with a gigantic and monstrous creature, defending a terrifying hooded figure with a face that could only be described as mind-bending. It shone in 1000 different colors, ever-changing and confusing. I imagine that it was the Progenitor’s Blade’s power personified. The defender had incredible strength, killing anyone it hit with a single blow. We focused our attacks on it, and when we had stunned it, the Avatar became vulnerable. We alternated between killing the defender and the avatar, until finally, both fell. Left in the wake of the avatar was the shard that had caused the chaos we’d been facing all day. Not even 5 minutes after we collected the shard, we were surrounded by a new opponent.
They called themselves the Apostles of the End, led by Lieutenant Sylvain. They were there to collect the shard for their master, Morgan Aster. Many of us were apprehensive about this due to the extremely dangerous nature of the shard. It had corrupted Gaia and had the potential power to destroy the world if combined with the rest of the shards. Most of us had decided that the shard needed to be cleansed or destroyed. The Lieutenant agreed to allow us adventurers to cleanse the shard, but claimed that it could only be done with entropic magic, which none of us were willing to invoke. Margaret lead a fiery ritual to try and purify the shard, but it was disrupted by the Apostles, and unfortunately resulted in a lot of people turning into goo. I rushed in after the fact to try and revive Twen, but as I worked to heal her, the Lieutenant grabbed the Shard from the ground under me and ran off. I chased after him but don’t remember how that ended… Eventually my soul was retrieved and I was resurrected, but the Apostles were gone, nowhere to be seen. We couldn’t let them get away with the shard, it was too dangerous!
Raindrop invoked an awe-inspiring summoning power and Lieutenant Sylvain materialized before us, holding the Shard of the Progenitor’s Blade. We argued back and forth for a bit, the adventurers insisting that we take the shard as we had defeated its avatar and defender (and also we didn’t trust these people). Sir Avendar challenged the Lieutenant to honorable combat, and won. They seemed to reach an agreement to act honorably and truthfully, and the conversation continued with less hostility.
The adventurers and Sylvain talked and talked, but a resolution was hard to come by. Finally, it was suggested that this shard go to the Apostles, and that us adventurers would take the next one that surfaces. An agreement would be made that each party would be communicative about shards surfacing, and they would be split evenly between the Apostles and us. Considering that the Shard was placed within Gaia’s heart for over a year and was imbued with her power, I was not super thrilled about this idea. However, we needed to make our way out of the Heart of Gaia as the Apostles had invoked entropy to cleanse the shard themselves, and it resulted in some terrifying entropic creatures hunting us down.
With a tentative pact of peace, we all fled the Heart of Gaia and started making our way to the surface. Sylvain journeyed with us, and Twen and I got to know him a bit. We told him that we didn’t want a relic of Gaia to be lost, and we wished it to be brought to Gaia’s Grove to be wielded by Gaia’s Champion once they are named. He told us about his master, Morgan Aster, and explained that he didn’t have much of a sense of humor. If Sylvain returned to him without the shard, he would be as good as dead. Honestly, Sylvain was a very likeable guy, so we wanted to work it out. We requested an audience with his master, and the look on Sylvain’s face was pretty concerning. He didn’t want to piss off his master, but this was important to us! He said he would be able to arrange it. Honestly I was pretty nervous about what we would be facing, but don’t worry dear reader, we lived! I’m writing this article!
We traversed through the caverns, fighting entropic creatures along the way, and Twen and I contemplated what we would say to this terrifying Morgan Aster. I’m grateful to the adventuring party for getting us through the caverns because I didn’t do much to contribute here besides heal a bit and worry about how that conversation would go. After an arduous journey, we reached the Church of Aurora once more, where we found Laika and other followers of Aurora, including Makhta, had been overcome with entropic magic. They had to be slain and rendered soulless by a shard of the Progenitor’s Blade to be cleansed. Thankfully Pawldo with his shard dagger, and Jasper, borrowing the newest shard from Sylvain, took up their arms and completed the grisly task. With the entropic magic stopped, and our friends back to normal, the party’s quest was complete, and Twen and I braced ourselves to meet the Master.
His presence was intimidating, but his demeanor was surprisingly normal. He patiently listened as we explained our devotion to our Goddess, and our concerns about relinquishing the Shard of the Progenitor’s Blade which had become imbued with Gaia’s own magic. The adventurers had already agreed that this shard would go with the Apostles, but for us to let go of a piece of Gaia felt completely impossible. Graciously, the Master explained that he could remove all of the Gaian ties from the shard, so that her magic could be returned to her. Twen and I agreed, and watched as he conducted the ritual before us. With a sigh of relief, we bid farewell to Sylvain and Morgan, and took a nap on Mom’s lap (the ground).
I’m still exhausted just thinking about the events of the weekend, but I am ever so glad that I did not miss it. It is abundantly clear how dangerous the Progenitor’s Blade and Entropy are, and we must do everything we can to ensure that all of that power does not fall into the wrong hands. Although this missive is written from my perspective, I must stress that the things I did and witnessed were not all of the important parts of this story, and I’m sure I missed some things in the chaos. Countless adventurers stepped up to the plate to ensure our success. My sincerest thanks go out to all who journeyed to the Heart of Gaia to defend my Goddess and bring balance to the Grove once more. It is a kindness I will not soon forget.
May the ground underfoot be steady, and the wind be at your back,
Sunday:
Hello I am Aiden, a newer Realms player who started a little under three months ago. In character I am Ace, a mercenary working to pay off some heavy gambling debts, and this is my experience during the Sunday portion of A Splinter in the Heart of the Earth.
OOC Section: I arrived at the site early alongside Max|Azimuth and Fin|Second and decided to help with setting up the woods due to boredom and the EH’s needing help. For the most part I simply put up surveyor tape with green representing walls, orange representing doors, and blue representing waterlogged areas. Aside from the I put up some signs detailing certain mods such as the waterlogged rooms and a border mod where one side of the woods was Chimeron territory and the other being Blackwood if I remember correctly. There were also puzzles scattered around the area, none of which I completed, and chests that took 100 pickaxe/hammer and chisel strikes to unlock that would give scrolls or or ore that can be used to buy traps. Afterwards I went to join up with the rest of the PCs who would be joining me for the Rum Run.
IC Section: Now for the actual event we were told that Makhta|Kathy (and some others I can't remember) had opened an underground bar but were robbed by bandits and goblins and that our job was to bring back as much as we could. From there we established a stronghold a little way from the tavern/bar and began to work our way through the tunnels. First we encountered a door rigged with Final Strike (8 ft), the room after forced all humans to go into an uncontrollable rage (I forgot the spell name), and lastly was a room with spider webs and some bandits I had to bribe in order for me and some others to pass through without fighting. Fast forward through a lot of fighting, me running away with a keg of booze like Jack Sparrow, and stealing gold from the corpse of a goblin who stole from my friends; I discover that some of the bottles of booze lying around that we are supposed to bring back have magic effects when drunk. The main 3 I encountered were floating armor, swings of piercing, and I think I have floating armor except I don’t. Cue 30min.-1hr. later, and I have had 15-25 bottles of both normal and magic booze (IC of course) and have decided to commit to the bit by pretending to be drunk. This included stumbling, falling over backwards, and “falling unconscious” which Kathy managed to get some pictures of.
OOC Section: Sometime later the event came to an end, and we went back to the tavern/bar to eat and have some drinks (non-alcoholic) in celebration. Sadly, I was unable to stay for teardown but did manage to score some leftover food that the EHs and NPCs were giving away. Overall, I had a bunch of fun and really enjoyed this portion of the event even though most folks would say Sunday portions aren’t as good as full day or nighttime questing. And yeah, this is the Rum Run portion of A Splinter in the Heart of the Earth from my perspective. I don’t doubt there were some other funny moments that others participated in that I missed, but I am tragically not all-seeing nor all-knowing like your favorite deities.
Why I Want To Go - Feassst of the Gorgon
By: Timothy "James Swift" Suitor
 A busy summer has at last come to an end, and though I gladly quest until the last quest is done, the quieter months are now upon us. With these quieter months, I can turn my focus more greatly upon my studies, with a focus on the Necromancy I’ve been learning.
Luckily though, someone recently brought a missive to me! SnakeU is hosting an academic conference on the Obsidian Necropolis, its mysteries, and leading expeditions within? As quick as my pen could write I issued an RSVP and began gathering my kit.
Alternating expeditions with time for research, rest, and refreshments throughout the day is a brilliant way to keep our bodies strong for the fight, and our minds keen for uncovering more about this Ziggarut. Whether or not you have an interest in Necromancy, I hope many of you will join us, many eyes will be able to pick up on details some of us may miss, and it takes many hands to lift a boulder, so to speak. …and literally. Ahem.
If the field of study doesn’t suit you, consider that this is one of the last adventures you may be likely to have until the spring thaw, so close out a year of questing with a great huzzah. You will be fed by a new team of chefs looking to make their mark, and that in of itself can be an adventure!
I hope to see many of you out there this weekend!
Ever the Student,
Magus Prime, Sir James Swift
((While I myself will be taking the whole thing way too seriously, this team has proven to do exceptionally well at fun and light content, mixed with some good depth. The wording around the food they’ve described has me excited to see what they come up with, and I’m sure they will have some high quality standard fare for the less adventurous of us.
And really, this is one of the last chances to quest side by side with one another for a good while, so it will be great to see whoever can make it!
Looking forward to seeing you out there,
Timothy Suitor))
Day should prepare for the morning and Night will see happenings in the afternoon.
Metal
Your future lies in the weather
Fall may find fate on a sunny day
Spring will see theirs in the cold
Summer should watch for rain
Winter could see something on a windy day
Day is destined to have an accident. Night will see good luck.
Water
People will shape your destiny
Fall will be impacted by a blacksmith
Spring will find a healer to be important
Summer should look for a fletcher
Winter may want to be aware of clowns
Day will be lead to fortune, but Night will have doom brought to them.
Community Care in the Realms
TLDR; The Order of the Spoon is helping to organize assistance during the upcoming uncertainty of food assistance benefits, if you could use assistance with meals or groceries or you would like to volunteer to help, please click HERE. To donate funds please click HERE. __________________________________________________
The Order of the Spoon has taken pride in feeding the people of The Realms for decades, from grand feasts to quest snacks, the order has provided countless meals to our community. Now more than ever we are planning to serve up the community, both in game and in real life. With changes and uncertainty surrounding food assistance programs across the US, we want to make sure that no member of our community goes without.
In that spirit, The Order of the Spoon, with inspiration from Becky Baron, is organizing an effort to raise funds and deliver home-cooked meals to members of our community who may be affected by this shutdown.
If you or someone you know could use a hand, whether that’s a warm meal, groceries, or a little extra help getting by; please fill out the form linked HERE
All submissions will only been seen by select members of the orders administrative council, and only the necessary delivery details will be shared with volunteers helping to prepare and deliver meals.
If you would like to help cook or deliver meals, you can also sign up through the same form linked above, every pair of hands and every bit of care helps keep this community strong. If you would like to donate to the fund, please do so HERE. We will also be hosting a bake sale to help raise donations at Feassst of the Gorgon on November 8th, 2025.
In addition to this, we would like to take a moment to remind the community about the Paladins Fund, if you need further financial assistance, please do not hesitate to contact Kelly Bonci.
[Editor’s note; You can learn a little bit about the Paladins Fund in this article]
Now more than ever, we have the chance to live up to the ideals we play for: resilience, compassion, and community. The Realms community has always been there for each other, I'm certain this time will be no different.
In service,
Dani Lacasse
