Throwback Thursday - Ask Syruss

 The View's original agony aunt, Sir Syruss, would tackle questions from readers on topics ranging from the magical to the mundane, dishing out advice and tough love with his signature humor and style. This post was originally published on April 12, 2017:

Dear Syruss,

What do you suggest would be the best familiar that I could claim for my own? There are so many creatures out there, both magical and mundane, it's so hard to choose! I'll stay away from bats of course, since that seems to be your thing and all, but surely there must be a method to this madness...please advise!

Dear Totally Your Real Name,

This is a tough question. I generally found when choosing a familiar I looked for sentient creatures who could have a real conversation. Like a real conversation, you know what I am saying? Sometimes you need to vent and these little buggers are guaranteed to listen. In fact, they have to and they generally won’t be too judgey to boot.

Now people may not know this but our resident Jerky Master Jean Baptiste is also one heck of a trapper. Now ever since he discovered these powerful magical ball traps he has been bringing ALL KINDS of creatures to the castle. Now some of them have been awesome, like the Nacho Cheese Breathing Dragon, the Sentient Giant Apple Tree or the Whiskey Fairies but some of them have been terrible like the Troll of Smothering. This troll just does not understand personal space!!! Everywhere you turn boom there it is, with its constant need for attention *shudders*

Or the Non-Alcoholic Gelatinous Cube. I was excited when JB told me he was working on a jello shot jerky but when I heard the crash kaboom coming from the kitchen only to see JB, three of our petitioners, and half the kitchen staff being digested, well I lost my hankering for jello.

But if you want solid advice follow Syruss’ five simple steps to picking an animal companion, familiar, and other magical creature friends.

More than a mere spell

Familiars are like family members, as loved as the kids, country members and are a lifelong commitment (or until you unlearn magic and forget that you have a Wookie in the Neden Castle). So before you wander down the ‘what familiar to choose path’ ask yourself these basic questions to check if you’re familiar-ready:

Who’s going to look after it? – let’s be realistic about this one, it is going to be you. No one is walking your T-Rex at 4 am when it needs to go potty. No one is going to feed your War Llama except you.

Can we make sure it gets regular exercise? The thing is that your pal is going to want to get out and about often. Once they have had a taste of adventuring then the life of a castle hawk is not so exciting so make sure they can spread their legs/wings/fins.

What will happen to it when you go away? Who is looking after it when you leave it back at home and how will you deal with the sudden loss of supreme power? Magic is thrilling and addictive. Face it, we always want more. That’s why we learn familiar in the first place to gain access to their natural magical abilities. But remember when they are not around you lose that and they lose out on a fun weekend with their best buddy (you!).

Is your country equipped to deal with its needs? Aka do we need fencing? If your lava hound is known for getting out you may not want to reside in a wooded area. If you have Small Banshee you probably shouldn’t live on a Snow Mountain top.

Can you afford a familiar? – Have you considered what it takes to feed a tiger? Have you seen how much Dragon litter it takes to fill up their litterbox?

Woof, woof or meow or RAWWWWWWWWW?

Dogs, wolves and cats, cheetahs, beholders are still the most popular familiar and it is possible to choose a creature that will fit in with your lifestyle, suit your backyard size and the level of maintenance you’re prepared to outlay. But with so many magical creatures and cross-breeds to choose from, trying to work out which one to get can give you a headache. I try to think of what I handle and manage. If the familiar is more likely to kill me rather than aid me I tend to stay away.

Fur, feathers or scales?

If you’re thinking beyond the typical unicorn or rhinoceros then there are plenty of things to choose from: cat, dog, fish, birds, reptiles, bear with a knife, small mammals, trolls, rodents, crab-shark and even insects. These alternate familiar choices can really work in with your lifestyle and home, especially if you don’t have a Self-Repairing Castle! But don’t be fooled into thinking they’re necessarily low maintenance – even a three-headed goldfish (that can’t be taken into certain fishing villages in Corsica) needs regular water changes and feeding that can be more work than a pedigree Creathorne horse!

Ask the familiar store salesperson all about the level of up-keep required before giving in to your first choice.

Are you ready to be a new parent?

Baby animals are almost as cute as newborn elves and raising a dog from a pup is a wonderful experience. But just like dwarven babies, animal bambinos require a lot of care – think potty training a Grebinar only with a dragon! If you’re not up for the extra effort of raising a creature, consider choosing a grown up familiar with a lot of spell experience or buying down for another spell.

Ah-ah-ah-choo!

If you have an allergy-prone country member, or an asthmatic in the family, you’ll need to think long and hard about the type of familiar that’s not going to turn your village into sneeze city. Familiar fur, saliva, and skin flakes are magical and can set off a number of allergic reactions to an extreme and while there are some hairless breeds, these are still not entirely hypoallergenic. Chat to an experienced Sorcerer about the best pet choice for your allergies.

Familiar and Friends

Owning a familiar can teach you responsibility and give you a special and unique companion that simply doesn’t compare to human friendships. Unfortunately, though, some of your country mates may not get along with your familiar, especially if they thinks it’s funny to pull Fido’s ears, tail, wings, or horns on a daily basis. Before you invest in a familiar, remember that they are not an emergency sacrifice on a quest, someone else’s plaything or someone else’s pet’s chew thing…they are your friend and new family member.

In the end, you are the only one who can decide what creature best suits you but maybe this story Nymbous once told me about selecting a familiar can help:

“One day Nymbous goes into a familiar shop and tells the owner he wants to buy a familiar that can do everything. The shop owner suggests a faithful dog. The man replies, “Come on, a dog?” The owner says, “How about a cat?” The man replies, “No way! A cat certainly can’t do everything. I want a pet that can do everything!” The shop owner thinks for a minute, then says, “I’ve got it! A centipede!” Then Nymbous said, “A centipede? I can’t imagine a centipede doing anything, but okay… I’ll try a centipede.”

Nymbous gets the centipede home to Neden and says to the centipede, “Clean the kitchen.” Thirty minutes later, he walks into the kitchen and… it’s immaculate!  All the dishes and silverware have been washed, dried, and put away. The counter-tops have been cleaned and the appliances are sparkling. Even the floor was waxed.  He’s absolutely amazed. He says to the centipede, “Go clean the living room.” Twenty minutes later, he walks into the living room.  The carpet has been vacuumed, the furniture cleaned and dusted and the pillows on the sofa plumped. It even watered the plants. Nymbous thinks to himself, “This is the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen. This really is a familiar that can do everything!” Next he says to the centipede, “Run down to the corner and get me some whiskey.” The centipede walks out the door.  Ten minutes later…no centipede. Twenty minutes later… no centipede.  Thirty minutes later… no centipede. By this point, Nymbous is wondering what’s going on.  The centipede should have been back after a couple of minutes.  45 minutes later… still no centipede!

Nymbous couldn’t imagine what could have happened.  Did the centipede run away?  Did it get run over by a cart?  Where is that centipede?  So Nymbous goes to the front door, opens it…and there’s the centipede sitting right outside. Nymbous says, “Hey! I sent you down to the corner store 45 minutes ago to get me a whiskey. What’s the matter?!” The centipede says, “I’m goin’! I’m goin’! I’m just puttin’ on my shoes!”

Hope this helps. sorry if it doesn’t and remember it’s like Lord Nymbous O’Leary always says “……..What do you want from me? I already told you a story get that pen and paper out of my face!!!!!!!”

Ask Syrus: Valentine's Day Edition

----------
Dear Syruss,

With the holiday of love fast approaching, I wanted to try to up my game this year. Since you are so smooth yet so sassy, I was wondering if you had any tips for the rest of us mere mortals on how to impress a significant other this year (or potential significant other!) Advice for all genders and species is appreciated!

Sincerely,

Looking for love

Hey there Looking for Love in All the Right Places,

I get it, Cupid and his cousin Aros are out and about causing trouble in hearts and loins across the Realms. Making all your hearts swoon for those you may have only admired from afar at this point.
They are making you loins go crazy and with that, you too are going a bit crazy. It is a real issue when they mess with Rhiassa loins, lion loins there I just wanted to write that.....

But speaking of Rhiassa, a while back at a Cecil's Taliea Gathalion and I started a book of pick up lines that are sure to do the trick we called "You used line _____ It was super effective!!!" There are all kinds of tips and tricks on how to approach.

The following is what we call the Do’s and Don'ts of Devine Debonair Dating Druids:

DON'T tell them to cheer up
The quickest way to direct a dialogue downhill is with a command. So saying “Cheer up!” or “Give us a smile!" is not the best way to go.  Nope, save your commands for troops on the battlefield.
DO spark a dialogue
By the time you cast a ritual to give you the nerve to approach someone you like, you may panic and say the first thing that comes to your noggin: “So… What are you doing?”
BLAH, right? Let me tell you that more often than not it's not clumsy questions but rather your personality and character that will pique your crush’s interest.

“The fighting here is great. I come in every morning on my way to the citadel to slay orcs. Do you work in the area?”

When they have told you that they work right next door and/or wants to have your babies, give them your opinion right back. This is called a conversation.

“Pffft, that’s just common sense, Syruss,” you may scoff, but trust me: it's an art that seems lost on a lot of people especially when you are trying to warm up to that new Hot Sorcerer.
DON'T invade their personal space
Dear random adventurer, I don't know where your hand has been - in a dragon, searching a laboratory, or searching a scalped goo  - it is gross, but I do know where you want to put it. If you touch my hair or bum I will break your arm. Kindest regards.
DO pay them subtle compliments
If you're Elvish, you're allowed to talk about the weather ONCE and only if you're leading somewhere with it. I'll condone one weather mention if accompanied by looking out the window contemplatively and sighing, “Dark One, the weather is awful. You look tanned though, have you just come back from holiday?”
 I don't mind assumptions, either. For example:
“You look like you have a creative job, do you work on the Neden Kazoo or the View?” If you're wrong, they'll be flattered that you called them creative. If you're right, they will most likely engage you in a nice conversation on the topic.

DO read the situation

If they’re a reading a book, dashing down the street or they’re fighting a dragon, they’re busy. Some adventurer sidled up last week when I was neck-deep in a fight with a gargoyle and they were sweating espresso with “Gosh, is that guy tough?” *Insert snorty chuckle* “Yes, actually.” “Oh. Right. I'll leave you to it then.” End of (thrilling) conversation.

Make sure you're timing each situation correctly.
DO be confident
A confident hero is not a self-obsessed one. They just know themselves well enough to be open to considering others. They don't concentrate on questions, creating a one-sided conversation that puts the onus on their crush  to “entertain” them. Instead, they make a statement that sparks a conversation. People/Elves/ Dwarfs/and Creatures can sense it if you aren't fully “present” or if your bravado is formed of poorly managed insecurity. So be yourself but do with self-assurance.
DON'T let one rejection ruin your confidence
You can spend hours analyzing the where’s and how’s of talking to people but the one “trick” that will dramatically increase the odds of you having a relationship of any kind with a particular person is talking to them. But if that doesn’t work get back out there and chat up someone new. Plenty more fish in the sea, as they say. Just don't catch crabs.
DON’T use cheesy lines
I would rule out “pick up lines” completely for the most part. There isn't one magical sentence that holds the key to unlocking romance. Not even “Dayum Elf, are you my dead grandmother? Because I never hear from you”  which has been used on me….twice… Just stick to normal conversation that makes people feel comfortable.

HOWEVER, IF YOU ARE GOING TO USE PICK UP LINES well then Taliea and I have come up with some doozies that will either get you scalped or get you that date you were looking for:

“I have a quiver full of arrows and this is your shot at love!”

“I am like a marn, I can equip both ways.”

“Are you a Shaman because I really want to merge with you.”

“ I see we are both learning sorcery, how about we get familiar?”

“ I know our first encounter may not have been memorable, but luckily I am a Seer because you get a Second Chance….At love!”

“ Are you an Alchemist Orc? Because you don’t need a love potion to get with this.”

“Woah easy, there is no need to call Divine Aid - I am already here.”

“You must be the best Seer in the world because you don’t need a find the path to find your way to my heart.”

“Are you enchanting your blade or are you just happy to see me?”

“You must be a phylactery because you have my mind body and soul.”

“Is that an Ashenmark Pike, because it is bigger than I thought!”

“You don’t need to go on a quest to find my heart.”

“Are you sure you’re an abjurer? Because I don’t think you can resist my magic.”

“Are you a blacksmith because you are reforging my broken heart.”

“I can be your cantrip baby, I am anything you might need.”

“Want to go to fight practice together because I would love to hit that!”

Wow, that was a lot of pickup lines Taliea!!!!!!

Anyway guys, love is magic, it is unexpected and can happen at any moment for no reason so be on the lookout for something special.

 It is like this story Nymbous once told me about pouring candy hearts into a Volcano, he said:
“As the candy hearts poured into the fiery quasar, a wondrous thing happened, why not. They vaporized into a mystical love radiation that spread across the universe, destroying many, many planets, including two gangster planets and a cowboy world. But one world was exactly the right distance to see the romantic rays but not be destroyed by them: The Realms. So all over the Realms couples stood together in joy and that is the magic of love” –Lord Nymbous O”Leary

I hope this helps, I am sorry if it doesn’t-

Till next time loyal readers!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Syruss,
It seems as if hats have taken the Realms by storm. I want to fit in but I'm not sure what hat choice is best for me. Since you're always sporting fashionable toppers - how do I get my hat game on par with yours?
Signed,
Hoping for Haberdashery
Dear Hats are the best thing on the planet thanks for asking,
             First things first I’m the realist realist….er, hem, I mean, first things first the thing you need to know about hats is, well, hmm...let me think, I got something for this…
            Hats are like love. There’s a hat out there for everyone…and once you find it, you’ll know. No, hats are more like badass vigilantes always watching over your head, protecting you from the Dr. Harmful Sunrays and evil Baron Bad Hair day.
Now some say pair the hat with the shape of your face! Here are some examples.
Man, that’s a lot of different shapes. I often forget how many different walks of life require hats.
With that said, picking a hat is all about the individual. Take those guides and throw them out of the window. YOU SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND, wear what makes you feel great, wear what makes you feel fashionable, maybe wear some head armor from time to time.
You could go around being the guy with no hats or you could wear ALL THE HATS.
Remember it is like Sir Lord Nymbous O’Leary always says: “Wearing a fancy hat is like having a baby or a puppy; everyone stops to coo and talk about it.”
I hope this helps, sorry if it doesn’t.
Ask Syruss
Dear Syruss,
There's so many paths of magic out there with so many spells to chose from, I can't help but feel so overwhelmed! Healer, blacksmith, sorcerer, necromancer - help! You seem like a guy who knows what he wants - how can I decide which path is right for me?
Sincerely,
Losing my (Magical) Mind
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear You’re In Good Company, Who Needs Minds Anyways (henceforth known as Y.I.G.C.W.N.M.A, pronounced *yeeg**cwin**ma**)

I hear ya, so many paths of magic, YET NOT ENOUGH!!!! I NEED MORE, MORE, MORE I TELL YOU!!!! THE GODS WILL TREMBLE AT THE MIGHT OF MY-- er, ahem, er, I mean -- yeah, so many choices, so many choices…..

I always choose magic based off of my immediate needs. I find once you are able to bend the physics of one magical plan it is easy to grasp the small connections that makes casting similar.

Best question to ask yourself: “WHAT DO U WANT TO DO????”

Once you answer this, most of the time you’ll know which path of magic to pursue, I mean most of the schools of magic contain the names of the things people are seeking to do.

You want to heal be a healer, you want to channel your god? Be a channeler. You want to see the future become a Seer, heck you want Assassin become an assassin-er…um, er, ok not a perfect example but you get the point.

Not sure on specifics? Maybe you have a general idea.
There are three general types of Magic. Support Magic, Offensive Magic, Plot Magic.

I know what you are thinking: “Syruss, what? Are you Bananas?” The short answer is yes; the long answer shouldn’t be written down, but hear me out on this magic thing.

Sure there are other spells and not all of them will seem like they fit in those three categories but let’s just look and see.

Support Magic: Magic that helps another adventurer (Raises, Repairs, Aura of Protection, Weapon Augments ETC)

These are the types of Magics you find on your healers, blacksmiths, shamans and buy-down-mancers. They are the friendly bunch behind the lines that you are often yelling “ARM...ARRRRMM….SOMEONE HEAL MY ARM!!!!!” at and are the ones responsible for fixing it and keeping you in between them and harm.

They fix you, heal you, and generally hate you when you yell so be kind to those at your behind…

Combat Magic: Magic you can use to inflict harm (Magic Missile, Lightinbolt, Armor Piercing, Poison, Disease, and Transformation)

These types of spells make you, the caster, into the weapon.

With these spells accompanied with some protection spells (Armored Cloak, Resist Death, Resist Magic, and Protection from Missile) you will be a formidable force flying throughout the ranks casting your destruction without fear of harm or reprisal.

Lastly some of my favorite: Quest Magic: (Guidance, Fortune Tell, Find the Path, Divine Aid, Precognition, Intervention, Foretell, Séance, Vision and Prophecy)

This is perfect if you want to coast through a quest. Don’t know the riddle? QUEST MAGIC. Forgot the Main Villain's Weakness that was written down on a Tomb in room 3? QUEST MAGIC. Want to ask the gods to return your friend's soul but get a Pie instead (no seriously, this happened to me I was the worst Channeler ever)…you guessed it, QUEST MAGIC.

Quest magic is super helpful, and can add a ton to your weird schtick. It can be as creative as you want to be, limitations are that of your imagination and the local gods' willingness to fly by the cuff.

But you have options and it is super easy to learn spells now too. The time gods have long vanished with the mandatory dagger-carrying gods and church or guild worshiping gods, so now it is easier than ever to become an all-powerful mage.

Also if you learn a bunch of spells and hate them be patient, in like a few months the gods will say you can pick a whole spellbook's worth of spells…that is, unless you are a figher.

Until next time kids, hope this helps sorry if it doesn’t and remember it is like Sir Lord Nymbous O’Leary always says: “What do you mean there is no protection path anymore, at least they didn’t mess with my embrace…..WHAT, NOOOOOO...”

Love Always,
