10 Questions with Greg "Daekara" Falconer

This week we have an interview with Greg Falconer, who plays Daekara (both he/him)!

1) How long have you been playing?
9ish years now. I started practicing at UConn in Fall of 2014 and went to my first event shortly after that.

2) How has the game changed since you've been playing?
The game has put a lot more effort into making great quests, when I started it was a very tournament focused game. The culture has also changed into a much more open place which I think has been great for the community. I see the new players given an environment they feel comfortable stepping up in and its wonderful.

3) Who in the community have you learned the most from?
The people I've learned the most from would have to be King Shandar, Sir Trent, and Sir Gwen. King Shandar has taught me a lot of my fighting skills and how to organize and work with groups, Sir Trent taught me discipline and scheduling, and Sir Gwen taught me a lot about running a kitchen and budgeting out food for an event.

4) What was your best IC moment so far?
My best in-character moment would have to have been at an Ashen Bounty a few years back. It was one of the first quests for which I had done the research to figure out how to kill most of the types of enemies we were facing. Instructing people how to fight creatures while leading the front of the line all day culminated in getting to kill the enemies' champion at the end of the night. Taking the scale mail off him to claim as my own made me feel like a big damn hero.

5) What was your best OOC moment so far?
So my best out of character moment would have to be the at the Coronation of King Shandar. Running my first event as a feastocrat was a huge undertaking, especially with how important the event was to my King and the amount of work that went into it and having a great let us pull through. Hearing the praise and what people loved about the food had me glowing.

6) What would you like to see changed or developed more in the game?
I would like to see individual tournaments and war maneuvers come back more. I miss the thrill of those fights and the adrenaline from the competition.

7) What advice would you give to new players?

Explore how you can bring what you love into the game. Chances are there are other people here who share your interests, and you can do something together that you never would have thought possible before. I've built lifelong friendships this way - doing things I never would have expected before coming to the Realms, and now those side projects have become a huge part of my life.

8) What do you love most about the Realms?
The people, Realms has become a found family for me and outside the game everyone is still friends with each other. The best moments of my life have all been tied to people I met in the game in some way.

9) Who would you like to see the next interview be with?
I would like to see Ben Lacasse's, Ryan Welch's, or Adam Blaisdell's answers. (Editor's note: Here's a link to Adam's 10 Questions interview.)

10) Anything else you'd like to take the opportunity to share with the community here?
This community has done a ton with charities and helping each other throughout the years but especially since we came back from the pandemic. I'm proud of all the good work we do and that we came back and endure.

We hope you've enjoyed getting to know a little more about Greg and his thoughts about the Realms! If you'd like to do one of these interviews, just send Pat Bobell (emeraldsaka on Discord) a message to let him know.

10 Questions with Adam "Tulkhan/Elric" Blaisdell

10 Questions with Adam Blaisdell
(aka Tulkhan/Elric)

1) How long have you been playing?

I have been playing since I was 5 years old, so roughly 22 years.

2) How has the game changed since you've been playing?

Necromancy has become a lot more... accepted? When I started if you were a necromancer you were killed on site. Now its become a bit more relaxed which I love. Also, the weapon construction has changed dramatically, from PVC only, to fiberglass, to bamboo, and now to flat blade weapons. Its been cool to watch the weapons evolve.

3) Who have you learned the most from?

That's hard being in the game for so long. So I have a few people. One Is the Baron. He taught me a ton of how the game is and though we don't chat as much as we used too, it was great to be able to fight him at QoH and show what I have learned. The second is Avendar. When I was young I never thought I would consider him my mentor but now, he has pushed me to hone my fighting skills and perfect what I can do. Last are Hygar and Kindrianna. They have opened up my mind to the possibilities of how magics can be used.

4) What was your best moment IC?

Honestly, I believe I have so many amazing moments to come. But if I had to pick it would be getting my Blue Bar in Voraniss. It meant a ton to be accepted and it was such a special in-character moment

5) What was your best moment as a NPC/EH/Player?

I have 2. The first is when I decided to make a fighter alt after being a 3 path for so many years. Showing up and having a good Npc coming up behind the group. I let everyone know they were there, and no one did anything, so I went "don't worry guys I got it." Went and killed the NPC with my baseball slide fighting technique and had everyone go "oh shit you can fight.

The second is the event after that one where I petitioned Voraniss. Renee came up and went "Hey you're a werewolf you wanna help in this ritual?" I said sure and she goes "awesome. You get to call out to Luna, you're on in 5 min good luck." I was not ready at all for that but Renee believed in my ability to swim when just tossed into the deep end.

6) What would you like to see changed or developed more in game?

I would like to see more roleplay-style fighting. I love the skill of how fast can I swing and get the kill. But I feel there are sometimes when a more dramatic-style fight could impact the event or scene far better.

7) What advice would you give new players?

If you want to get involved just do so. Don't wait for an opportunity to come to you, make the opportunity. Also, don't be afraid to find your own style. Don't think "oh no one takes these spells I probably shouldn't." I am a very decent backpack healer but have no combat raises. It's not fully about the spells but how you can use them.

8) What do you love most about the game?

The people. The diversity in how many people we have that come together and make something wonderful.

9) Who would you like to see the next interview be with?

That's a hard one. Honestly probably someone who has been playing longer than I have.

10) Anything else you'd like to take the opportunity to put into print?

If you ever have any questions, in or out of character, please reach out. I am happy to help. Also, I shall be opening the Claw and Fang armory. I do a lot of flat-blade weapons. People tell me they are fantastic. I take Green, Gold, or Barter for them.

10 Questions

with Renee "Mouse" Booke

1) How long have you been playing?

I began playing on October 14th, 2006 at an event titled “Reflections on a Distant Land.” I guess I’m coming up on twelve years pretty soon.

2) How has the game changed since you've been playing?

The spell system is what has changed the most, I think. As many oldbies will tell you, back in our day the length of the weapon you wielded determined how quickly you could learn your spells. I’ve personally seen our system go from that, to two cost buy downs, to one cost buy downs, and finally to no cost buy downs! On top of that, we now have spell mastery and the ability to learn multiple spells per event. It was quite the shift. I’ve also had the pleasure of seeing the changes in weapon construction first hand, and the phases of PVC, fiber glass, and bamboo cores.

3) Who have you learned the most from?

I’m one of those people that considers myself to be a lifelong student. I don’t ever want to stop learning from everyone and anyone. That being said, I think Lord Sir Aven’Dar had a very big part to play in my Realms education. He taught me how to make weapons, how to analyze situations and not get bystander syndrome, how to lead, and he introduced me to Vandor to name a few of his contributions.

4) What was your best moment IC?

I hate picking favorites. I owe all of these moments to amazing Event-Holders from over the years. If I absolutely had to pick a favorite though, it would be Clan Defender’s last stand when adventurers of the Realms were attempting to escape from Wayland’s fortress. The inky blackness of Bedlam was coming fast down the hall, and the Church of Vandor decided to stay and fight so that others could get away. It was such an emotionally intense moment. I’m crying, I’m stabbing, I’m giving it my all while I’m surrounded by the Lords of two nations (Aven’Dar & Malaki) and some of my best friends, while thinking that we’re all about to bite it. Aven’dar, who was the leader of the Church at the time, had given us all the chance to leave and save ourselves but we had unanimously agreed to stay and fight together. That event was also the first, and only, time I received a tick…albeit a voluntary one. I had agreed to represent the Church and sacrifice a part of myself to restore the magic of the weakened adventurers around us.

5) What was your best moment as a NPC/EH/Player?

This past year my OOC husband (Derek Booke), my friends, and I started a nation together. Voraniss has been a culmination of everything I’ve learned in my years in the Realms, and it is one of the things I am most proud of contributing towards. It is rich in lore, spirituality, and creativity, and has forced me to take on a more public role in the Realms. I will never forget the look of pride on everyone’s faces when we won Best New and Upcoming Nation at Feast of Leviathan that year, and the sense of accomplishment when I, Gavin, and Hygar swept the category of Best Role-Playing of Magic by a Spell caster. Hopefully I’ll have my own good EHing stories once the very first Feast of Voraniss comes around next April!

6) What would you like to see changed or developed more in game?

I would love to see a more immersive experience happen at events. I think you’ve seen a big push for it on the EHing side like with what the Folkewood Initiative has been doing, and how the quality of props just keeps going up in our community. On the player side, I love what groups have been doing to create identities for themselves: Northern Alliance and their epic camp, Gau Dring and their unique ways of displaying heraldry beyond a tabard. I want more people to feel comfortable trying that stuff out. We can only benefit from it, and I know ya’ll a really creative bunch of people because you inspire me daily. Secondly? I want continuity between events. We have to figure out a way to get more of this into our community from a story-telling perspective.

7) What advice would you give new players?

Learn from everyone, and never approach the game like you have it all figured out. Things are always changing, so there are always opportunities to learn…even when you’re learning what not to do. There are some of us that have had a really long time to make mistakes and we could save you a boat-load of trouble! Ask questions, get involved. If you’re not sure how to get involved…then ask that question! Are you seeing the pattern here?

8) What do you love most about the game?

My absolute favorite thing about the Realms is the level of creativity people have. So many of you are insanely talented artists, writers, musicians, event-holders, leatherworkers, seamstresses, chefs, actors, etc. I love seeing what you create, and it pushes me to want to do better. On top of all of that, most of you are incredibly charitable with your time. Without you, a lot of these wonderful memories and experiences wouldn’t exist. You’re the real heroes of the Realms.

9) Who would you like to see the next interview be with?

Craig Blais (Stewhart of Voraniss, and Squire Bohis of Creathorne)

10) Anything else you'd like to take the opportunity to put into print?

If you’re bored, check out the Voraniss website for lore and other goodies at https://voraniss.wordpress.com/.

Ten Questions with Rob "Morkeleb the Red/Alder Ragnarson" Nolan

Ten Questions With Rob Nolan
(aka Morkeleb the Red/Alder Ragnarson)

How long have you been playing?
A little over 22 years. More than half my life.
Potato Goblins

How has the game changed since you've been playing?
I started as a Rouge caster in the guild system, I had one specific weapon I could use and it took forever to learn spells. Now magic is much easier, but it feels like it is less effective, I miss netherforms and conductive lightning bolts.

Who have you learned the most from?
Trent, Artex, and Ashnak. The three of them taught me the most important thing, no matter how much you invest in the game, remember it is a game and not to take it too seriously to have fun.

What was your best moment IC?
My favorite moment has to be watching my step son go under the shield wall in a line battle at Gold and Green. He drum rolled most the the enemy team before they knew he was there. In fact it worked so well he did it again in the next fight. The third time they were ready for it so when he got behind them he just yelled, "I'm about to do it again!" and laughed as their entire line turned around in the middle of a fight.
Some of those faces look familiar

What was your best moment as a NPC/EH/Player?
As an NPC it has to be a tie between the game of hot potato that spiraled out of control into the Potatoe Goblins, or the singing zombie chorus line that danced into the middle of the PC's unchallenged because of the gobsmacked laughter. As a player it has been, and I hope always will be, bringing a new player into the game and discovering it again through them.

What would you like to see changed or developed more in game?
I would love to see another combat spell path that would be a viable alternative/compliment to sorcerer.
I'd also love to see a real full scale war within the realms where everyone is pressured to take sides, friendships tested or shattered(IC), people get scalped out, nations are destroyed, and boarders are redrawn. I experience a lot of schadenfreude with my characters.

What advice would you give new players?
For fighters, don't be afraid to die, you'll get back up. For casters, never make a verbal that you can't say in one breath. That last has saved several of my characters lives.

What do you love most about the game?
The history. I've played other LARPs where they have these long written cannon histories of the nations in the game, "our forefathers" this and "long ago" that, but it is all made up and no one was there to see it.  In Realms you can talk to people who were there when Kugen became a god, or the nameless one fell, or the Knights of the Eternal Flame were founded. We've seen the history of this world grow up around us and we've played a part in forging it, it hasn't just been typed up by an EH as backstory.

Who would you like to see the next interviews be with?
Any of the kids who have been playing since before they could walk and are now adult players.

Anything else you'd like to take the opportunity to put into print?
Accents are hard, everyone wants to be like Garhars but when you go from Swedish to Russian to Irish over the course of an event it might be time to throw in the towel.

Ten Questions With Emily "Kara Akiak" Murphy

How long have you been playing?
At this point 1 year and 2 months; surprisingly a lot.
How has the game changed since you've been playing?
There was Northern Alliance joining Blackwood to verbals finally being clarified going on in the year and two months I've been in game.
Who have you learned the most from?
I've learnt the most from Tao.  Make all the comments about favoritism you want, hes still one of the main reasons I know how to deal casino blackjack
What was your best moment IC?
My best moment was actually pretty recent. It was at Feat of Chimeron's questing and I regret not sleeping well the night before, because I was kinda bad mouthing the Fallen Kingdom goons. Now as to be expected, they didn't like this very well. They ended up, cutting of all my limbs, but not killing me. I know the spell heal limb, and I'm near a puzzle. I kid you not, I heal my right arm and just keep going. I ended up solving the puzzle after they had put up with enough of my crap and killed me, but I believe if was worth it.
What was your best moment as a NPC/EH/Player?
My best moment as an Npc was when I was npcing for the night quest as a non-com due to an injury I had gotten earlier that day. People started asking my questions and I didn't have time to run to the marshal and run back, so I made stuff up. I am so thankful that Mackenzie (Valley Girl) and the person she had brought went with it, or we would've been caught in an awkward situation.
What would you like to see changed or developed more in game?
I would like to at least play an 24 hour live event just to see what it would be like, but that's really it.

What advice would you give new players?
My advice is well its great to meet a lot of people and to ask questions and to remember to not commit to anything, do what you're comfortable with. When I first joined, I knew, at that time, I was comfortable with the idea of being in the front lines, so I became a spell caster, who are very rarely in the front.
What do you love most about the game?
I love, and I'm going to sound cheesy here, the people. Honestly, they're really nice, or at least tolerant enough not to snap at people without good reason.
Who would you like to see the next interviews be with?
Jean Baptiste (if you haven't done him already), Hunter of Dustin's Blackwood province I can never remember the name of, and you.*
Anything else you'd like to take the opportunity to put into print?
And my final piece of advice for everyone: when in doubt, use sarcasm to get out.

* Editors Note.
When Emily responded with "and you" to the question of "Who would you like to see the next interviews be with?"  I posted the link to my past interview, as she was responding to me with "and you."  But lets take it one step forward.  "And You!"

10 Questions with Brian "Crispin" Rubenstein

How long have you been playing?
I’ve been playing for about three and a half years now. I was brought in by my brother who had just started being involved in SMAS.
How has the game changed since you've been playing?
Honestly, not a whole lot has changed. We still have high skill based combat, an extensive magic system and a ton of really dedicated helpers and content providers.
Who have you learned the most from?
There are a huge number of people who I have learned from. I’ve learned a number of things about the history of the game from Becky Baron (Kovaks), a ton about spellcasting from Eric Willison (Rosetta/Ged) and Richard Pavis (Quinn) and a lot about how to stand up for myself and argue points I have to make from Jesse Gifford. (Mestoph)

What was your best moment IC?
My best moment IC definitely has to be the end of the Bedlam series, as Kieren. Walking around the circle, carrying the ball of northern light was one of the most powerful moments I have had in a LARP in a long time.
What was your best moment as a NPC/EH/Player?
My best moment as an NPC (or really, staff for the event) would have to be when someone shouted “Its vision is based on movement” at Saurabian Questing. That room was definitely the highlight of that event, and I think really had the sort of silly horror moment we were going for, including the breaking of the fourth wall.

What would you like to see changed or developed more in game?
I would love to see more roleplaying in the game This isn’t to say that I haven’t also been guilty of dropping character sometimes, but the more people are immersed as a whole, the less likely individuals are to break character.
What advice would you give new players?
Be willing to accept help, but also be willing to make your own choices. A lot of people talk about how there are plenty of people who are around to help you, but oftentimes I’ve noticed people fall into one of two types when they start playing. One, they are willing to listen, but their own thoughts get overwhelmed by all the voices around them, or two, they aren’t willing to listen, and just want to do everything on their own. I’ve found that a combination of the two really works well, for those who can do it.

What do you love most about the game? I love how much people jump to help. One of the greatest things I’ve seen about the realms is how much people care, and how much they give back to the community. If I could say one thing that truly means Realms to me, that would be it.
Who would you like to see the next interviews be with?
Andrew Bancroft (Rorin), Jesse Gifford (Mestoph), Jeremy Grayson (Nighthawk)
Anything else you'd like to take the opportunity to put into print?
Nope.

10 Questions with Robert "Mullet" Hopkins

Ten Questions with Robert "Mullet" Hopkins

How long have you been playing?
My first event was Shadow’s Wrath, thrown by Robert “Drake” Hayes on his farm in Kingston, NH, 1997. I had a large gap while away in the Air Force from 2000, but was fortunate enough to come back home permanently for my re-debut at Feast of Creathorne 2012. The player I was in the beginning is a stark contrast to the player I became upon my return. Where once I kept very much to myself and my circles, I returned far more engaging of other players and nations. I also returned with my wife, whom had to endure seven years of bending her ear about Realms before getting here. I was very lucky she loves it as much as I.

How has the game changed since you've been playing?

I’ll state the obvious about the change in equipment. As far as I was concerned, Realms was a time capsule during my time away. I was very wrong, and blown away when I showed up with my hardware store PVC and duct tape logs. Feeling a 4’6” sword as light as a feather wasn’t a concept I was prepared to digest so suddenly. Organizations such as the Order of the List brought a season long competition in a way I had never seen before. The progression tempo of casters was a change I could not have anticipated. I remember the days when becoming a three path was a much longer process, and buy downs were more restrictive.

Who have you learned the most from?
I hate to leave anyone out, but Sir Guilliam has had the largest impact on me in and out of game. I admire his leadership, patience, honesty, and trustworthiness. When I think of players I’d like to emulate, Sir Guilliam’s mentorship is the example I try to follow. He sees the strengths in people and has helped develop them in subtle ways that isn’t forced or with ulterior motives.
Many others have had positive influences in guiding me to be the player I am today, such as Sir Shean, Sir Radstar, Lord Swan, and Sir K to name a few.

What was your best moment IC?
An occurrence comes to mind, and is very small in the grand scheme of things. I stumbled into an element where Sir K was fighting individual combat challenges wherein the judge would determine if the battle was worthy to him or not. It appeared the judge wanted three worthy battles. Between fights, sir K had his helmet off when a combatant stepped forward before he was able to fully don his headpiece. I rushed in to his defense with no armor, and a single 4’6” in an attempt to stall the enemy. I lost an arm and a leg in the scuffle, desperately attempting to wear down the foe’s two points of armor versus my armor less person. I fell on my back as I frantically attempted to defeat my adversary, managing to strike the necessary, albeit lucky, fatal blows, emerging the victor. This pleased the judge, the third needed, leaving us victorious to this encounter.
It seemed trivial, but it was the complete immersion during those mere seconds that stand out to this day. I was completely in the moment, it got my adrenaline going, and was rewarded with victory to boot. Moments like that I relish.

What was your best moment as a NPC/EH/Player?
Not a moment, as much as an event. Shadow’s Wrath was my first event, and I NPC’d to “get my feet wet”. Being so new, I was given a menial, and in my opinion, the best task a newbie could be given. In order to maintain maximum immersion, the site could be live at any time. My job was to play a “crunchy” whose sole purpose was to pop out at unsuspecting players at any time. I was a pitiful foe at best, and was slain over and over again. I relished every moment of it. The surprise and sometimes fear I brought upon the unsuspecting prey was every bit as enjoyable for me as I believe it was to those I crossed paths with. Nowhere, and no time was safe. I don’t believe there was a dull moment for anyone that weekend.

What would you like to see changed or developed more in game?
It’s very difficult to say as the game continues to evolve over time. There will never be a time where we are able to reach a realms utopia, but I do believe in the community at large doing its best to make this experience the best it possibly can be for the masses. I see very positive initiatives such the “No Jeans” to help garb, to feasting, bardic, and marshalling groups all player driven to improve the experience from within. I would much enjoy to see those drives continue to develop.

What advice would you give new players?
Be immersed. Get to know as many people as you can within your boundaries. Most of all, ask questions about everything and everyone. Learn the stories, people’s histories as best as you can. Most folks are more than happy to share words, knowledge, and lore. The game is far more fun with new friends, and getting to know goings on that surround you.

What do you love most about the game?
Night questing, bar none. I’d say the comradery of the people, but it goes without saying. The suspension of disbelief in the darkness is the aspect of the game I crave the most, as every sense of my being is heightened like a tight wire. The sheer chaos of a battle in the blind brings me right where I want to be, in the story, a part of it, a chapter with no clue as to how it will end. If I had my way, I’d night quest from sun down to sun up.

Who would you like to see the next interviews be with?
Jim “Quaran” Marden, Pete “Mellow” Starkey, Mike “Wrath” Doherty

Anything else you'd like to take the opportunity to put into print?
It’s cliché but thank you to all that make events possible. Without the hard work and dedication, there would be no game, so I give much respect to all the efforts put into making the Realms possible!

10 Questions with Sara "Zarine" Jessop

How long have you been playing?

My first experience with the game was a double header weekend in 1998. Black and White and Yoma. Two totally different styles of events so it was an interesting experience. I was a teenage girl who really just showed up because my boyfriend and his friends pressured me into trying it. I thought the game was interesting, but I was a really different person then so I thought it was kind of stupid and I was a bit embarrassed about even playing at all. But almost 20 years later, here I am.

How has the game changed since you've been playing?

Besides weapon and armor being lighter, and cheaper? The attitude of the game has changed a lot. There is a lot less PvP, everyone 'gets along' (or so it seems) and there is a lot more worry about offending people and hurting feelings. This can be both good and bad. I felt a lot more immersed in the game when there was more PvP as the world felt a lot more real. There was a continuity to it that we don't get as much from plots which change from week to week.

Garb has gotten better. Yes, I said that. I know there is still room for improvement, but I think it has come a long way since I first came into the game.

There are a lot more kids, and I don't just mean because I am old. I mean actual little tikes running around. I personally am not a fan of more kids, but it does allow more people to continue to enjoy the game even though they are older and busier, where as back when I started most people felt that they needed to walk away from it when they got to that point in life.

The Omnibus has changed a lot as well, and I don't mean just the rules. It is much more verbose, more serious. I miss the simpler, thinner, more fun focused rule book.

Who have you learned the most from?

Ah, my least favorite question because it's the hardest to answer. When you've been around as long as I have, you inevitably learn a little bit from everyone, and everything you learn is important in some way. Everyone in Invictus deserves a mention here, just for showing me that I can do things that I never thought possible. But I suppose you want me to single people out.

Jon (Trent) is obviously the person I have spent the most time with both in and out of game (he's like a fungus that just keeps hanging around), and as such I am sure I have learned the most things from him. Most importantly he has instilled the most confidence in me both in and out of game.

Diana (Kiira) has helped me a lot with learning to craft and how best to build my spell paths and use them effectively. She also pushes me to be better in all aspects of the game.

Mike (Vuel) has helped me a lot at practice. His patience with me has helped a lot and he always pushes me to do just one more fight. If it weren't for him I would spend a lot more time sitting on my butt at practice.

What was your best moment IC?

My Gladitorium (initiation into Invictus). I'm not sure I have ever been more nervous for anything, ever. I actually felt sick to my stomach from nerves and excitement. Then I felt sick from exhaustion from all of the fighting (though Vuel did most of the actual fighting, it was a lot more physically demanding than I expected). In the end, I felt that I deserved that tabard, and I felt so proud to have Shandaar present to me. The feeling of hard work paying off was the best feeling.

And joining a nation that I believed in was an amazing experience that I will never forget.

What was your best moment as a NPC/EH/Player?

I very much enjoyed playing Delphi, the Oracle of Blackwood. It was a different role for me, and I really liked thechallenge of role playing someone new. Creating a costume and a personality for a face character was really fun, and I was really grateful to have the opportunity to play someone important who got to help shape the plot. It was also a lot of fun to watch people fight for Delphi's honor with that ridiculous staff during the tournaments.

What would you like to see changed or developed more in game?

I would really like to see more collaboration between eventholders and plot writers to make a more consistent world. It would be nice to have things cross over from event to event, instead of having to wait a year to not only continue a plot, but for it to even exist again. It would also be nice for the PCs to fail every once in a while, and to have it still matter next week.

I'd love to see the return of more PvP (reason: please see 'how has the game changed...'). We can all still like each other outside the game, but why do we all of our characters have to get along all of the time? Why can't we all go to war with each other and then go have pizza?

What advice would you give new players?

Don't be embarrassed too easily. Talk to people. Don't be afraid of screwing up. Enter tournaments. Go to practices. Visit all the fire pits and listen to all the stories. Ask questions. Get involved.

What do you love most about the game?

How absolutely life changing it is. I met my husband here. I have met almost all of my friends here. It is not an exaggeration for me to say that if it weren't for this game I would not be where I in in my life, and I am in a pretty damn good place. It's shaped who I am more than just about anything else in my life, and I feel like I am not the only person who can say that.

Who would you like to see the next interviews be with? Please list three people.

There are people who haven't done this yet?? Lets try to get a good variety here: Elias (Nate Carr), Riverstone (Allyson Cunningham), Rillan (Joe Sims)

10 Questions with Pi "Kwido Sedna" Fisher

1) How long have you been playing?

I first LARPed with the Realms combat system at a Summer camp in 2011. Hillary Fotino and Rhiannon Chucciaro were counselors, and the camp was looking for someone to lead a LARP. The first legal event I made it to was Feast of Blackwood III, in October of 2012.

10 Questions with Adam "Damion" Landry

How long have you been playing?
19 years. Dan O'Neil (Hiro Yashida) brought my to my first event; Tournaments of Creathorne 97.
How has the game changed since you've been playing?
The game itself has been remarkably consistent. The organization of spells might be different and the omnibus wordier but everything is fundamentally the same from when I started. I remember the View from Valehaven being a monthly half page zine with restrictions on how often you could contribute.

Who have you learned the most from?
I've learned most from the leaders I've followed; Kugen, Cinnabar, Jarrod, Blade and Jaha. Each of them had their own repertoire for handling challenges and problems and it gave me a large play book to pull from in the times I am called on to lead by rank or by example.
What was your best moment IC?
Cementing Grimloch's legacy of marital prowess by continuing to dominate the war tourney in spite of being a twenty to one underdog.
What was your best moment as a NPC/EH/Player?
With no legs and my sword impaling Blade, killing Yimmit with my marn to win the final fight of my gauntlet. Also, riding a unicorn.
What would you like to see changed or developed more in game?
A) Costuming. Both clothing and armor as well as props like latex weapons. John's no jeans initiative is a great program and I think it does a lot for immersion which in turn helps with... B) Role-playing. You can't role play without roles and what we have right now fighter with support caster, quester and self-sufficient aren't really roles but meta-games.
What advice would you give new players?
Don't let veterans bulldoze your ideas. Even if they say we tried that before, try it your way, do it better. If we like it things will change.
What do you love most about the game?
love that this is a place where I feel at home with old friends I've known since the beginning and young ones I've only known a few years. The spring drive down route 4 towards Creathorne and the start of the season, being exhausted and sore after North/South, The long autumn afternoon of Queen's War. These have become the places I feel I belong at certain times of the year and are what I look forward to.
Who would you like to see the next interviews be with?
Please list three people. Cathy and Rob Hoskins, Tara Jackson and Steve Hinkle
Anything else you'd like to take the opportunity to put into print?
I'd like to thank all the event holders who keep me entertained on weekends as well as the NPC's and Realms photographers! Lastly, a shoutout to all my brother and sisters in arms in Grimloch!

10 Questions with Steve " Torolf/Red" Nelson

10 Questions with Steve “Torolf / Red” Nelson

How long have you been playing?

My first event was the Queen of Hearts in 2010, and I went with my
oldest kid. At the time, I had been going to the Methuen fight
practice with both my children for a while. But we were completely
blown away by that QOH. The funny thing is that I initially started
going to the Methuen practice and some events mostly as an activity to
do with my kids. But somehow over time, it grew into a thing that I
did, and one or both of the kids sometimes come with me.

How has the game changed since you've been playing?

Probably the most visible change since I began is in the construction
of weapons and its effect on combat. When I first started bamboo was
an experimental material and not allowed by all event holders yet. The
real reason that I adopted it back then was not for the speed and a
fighting advantage that most people consider. I started using bamboo
to lighten weapons so that my kids would be able to participate more
fully. At the time, they were roughly 9 and 11 years old, and the
weight of the PVC weapons made it very hard for them. I think that
this is the real benefit to the game of lighter materials for things
like weapons, shields and armor.

The Order of the List was also founded around the time that I joined
the game. I feel like it has served to drive more focus on excellence
in fighting. I know that personally it has given me more tangible
goals to strive towards from year to year. It’s also gotten me to some
more events, particularly in the last few years.

Who have you learned the most from?

I’d have to say without a doubt that I’ve learned the most in Realms
from Steve Johnson. In fact, I wouldn’t have even found out about
Realms if he hadn’t put out fliers at a local pizza place for the
Methuen practice that he ran years ago. So it was from him that I
first learned to fight and make weapons and everything else that goes
along with being a newbie. Then over the last handful of years I’ve
helped Steve and Dave Hayden start and run the Riverhawk group. From
both of these pillars of the Realms, I’ve learned a lot about
mentoring and giving back to the community. Their viewpoint of
building this group while empowering the Riverhawks to run it
themselves rather than run it for them I think is profound. I’m also
frequently amazed by how active Dave is in the community and honestly
don’t know how he does it. I’ve fought under Dave’s generalship a
number of times now and am beginning to understand the dynamics of
field leadership and tactics as well.

What was your best moment IC?

In general, I love the large scale war maneuver kinds of events. Big
field or bridge battles with lots of people and castle battles really
get my blood flowing. Also, any event that one of my children go with
me is still a real highpoint. Like the night quest at that first QOH
with my oldest kid stands out in my memory. But one moment from the
past year that I especially enjoyed was at the Tournament of
Creathorne. For the war of nations, Swoop entered the Riverhawks to
compete despite being the only Riverhawk on the field at the time. The
sheer brass of that impressed me, so I offered to join him and put on
a tabard for the first time in my Realms career. Clearly it was not
about winning but about standing boldly against whatever storm may
come. Two fighters potentially facing an army on the field. That was
epic, and there were some great pictures taken of it too!

What was your best moment as a NPC/EH/Player?

I haven’t held any events, or even NPC’d yet. Although NPCing is on my
short list of things to do in the near future. But there have been a
lot of really great moments acting as one of the mentors of the
Riverhawks. It’s been a real pleasure seeing them grow as a nation and
branching out into the larger community as individuals. They’ve come a
long way from where they started, which was just us old guys sparring
on the UMass Lowell quad trying to suck in anyone who showed an
interest. We weren’t even sure back then that security would let us
stay, but we always tried to be friendly with them, and they never
chased us off. Then the Riverhawks reached a core size and membership
to go through all of the processes with the school to attain
recognition as a club that got them things like a budget and indoor
practice space.

But one of my proudest moments in Realms was at the last feast of
Leviathan seeing the Riverhawk Clan receive the 2014 View award for
Best up and Coming Group as well as multiple individual awards.
Achieving such recognition by the Realms community was a real big
milestone for the Riverhawks. This year at the feast of Eagle’s Rook,
I got pretty choked up when they recognized Dave, Steve, and I for our
efforts over the years. The bacon cupcakes were awesome, and I wear
that belt favor into battle with pride.

What would you like to see changed or developed more in game?

I would like to see more plot lines like Bedlam that cross over
events. While I can see how hard it is to make something like that
happen, I find that very immersive. Currently, I like the Norlund plot
a lot and would like to see it seep into some other events. And not
just because it’s a Norse plot, but the idea of a bleeding over of
problems from another realm is an interesting notion.

What advice would you give new players?

Just ask! Whether it’s: How do you keep hitting me in the head? How
did you make that? Or what’s a good build for a particular path. In my
experience folks in the Realms are always happy to explain what and
how they do what they do. And fighters love fighting, so don’t be
afraid to ask someone to spar with you even if they’re a lot more
experienced. And if you’re going to fight wear kneepads! You may be
surprised to learn that knees don’t last forever.

What do you love most about the game?

It’s probably no surprise to hear that I love the combat. As I said
before, I really like the big war maneuver kinds of scenarios. But for
me, it’s not about winning and losing, because let’s face it most of
us get killed a lot. I love to challenge and push myself to do better.
And maybe I tend to favor the war events and tourneys because I’m
surer that the person I’m facing is actually trying to win. When you
fight an NPC, while this is often the case it’s hard to be certain.
I’d much rather lose a great fight than win an easy fight. In fact,
some of my favorite moments in combat were fights that I lost but felt
like I did well against a much more experienced opponent. It’s also
the reason I enjoy the North-South wars so much even though the
outcome is usually the same. There are always some fantastic
struggles.

Who would you like to see the next interviews be with? Please list three people.

Pi Fisher, Ben Pepper, Adam Landry

Anything else you'd like to take the opportunity to put into print?

As a parent of kids who have been active in Realms, some years more
than others, I’d like to remark on how the community has interacted
with them. When they were fighters they were treated like any other
fighter, when they were casters they were treated like casters. While
they may have occasionally struggled for a position in the action it
never seemed like more than any other newbie might encounter while
trying to find their role or voice. When they had questions, people
were always very generous in taking the time to explain or give
advice. Particularly about the spell stuff that I couldn’t help them
with at all. And the couple times that one of them sustained minor
injuries people were quick to step out of character and help out or
voice concern. This speaks very well for this community, and I’d like
to thank you all for that.

10 Questions with Craig "Bohis Nosetti" Blais

Hi My name is Craig Blais also known as Bohis Nosetti.

How long have you been playing?
I have been a part of the realms for a little over ten years.

How has the game changed since you've been playing?
The game has changed a lot since i started playing, from the spell system to the weapons we now use, A lot has changed. Back when I started we had to use 3/4" pvc for our weapons and 1/2" pvc was on trial to see if it was safe to be used for 3'8"s. We also used to have Two cost buy downs for spells instead of the current one cost buy downs.

10 Questions with Joseph "Saito Bonkai" Sylvain

How long have you been playing?
-I have been playing since 2006, my first event was The View from Valehaven Festival II,

How has the game changed since you've been playing?
-It seems that the game has changed to focus more on performance and speed rather than aesthetics and fun.

Who have you learned the most from?
-I would say that the person that I learned the most from was Andy Adams, who introduced me to the game in the first place.

What was your best moment IC?
-It is hard to pick a best moment, there are moments are a great for the character and ones that are great for me, I suppose I would have to go with a funny moment. At one point I was part of Nature's Kin, and at the Green and Gold that year my Lord Rhubarb was inside the castle defending it while I was part of the horde assaulting it. During the fight we took aim on each other and loosed arrows at the same time. We got to watch our arrows hit perfectly and fly back to us.

What was your best moment as a NPC/EH/Player?
-My favorite NPC moment was when I was the tail of the Hydra at Demonic Invasion. I had to down power myself a bit but because of bad choices I got to keep Alex Sokolowski stuck in the corner of the building for about 20 min while I repeatedly cut off his legs.

What would you like to see changed or developed more in game?
-I would like to see more crossover in quests and story lines, I would help the world seem more interconnected.

What advice would you give new players?
-Being a new player is hard if you don't know someone in the game, so I would say the best way to start would be to go to events and not play at first, and then NPC a few before you bring in your own character.

What do you love most about the game?
-I love many things about the game. I love the friendships that you can make, how into the game people can get (IC), and some of the epic combat situations you can get into.

Who would you like to see the next interviews be with? Please list three people.
-It has been a while since I've played (real life and stuff) so 3 people to interview.... Alex Solokowski, Shane Braun, Doug Fisher.

10 Questions With Justin "Dresden" Theriault

Sorcerer Dresden Silverspring of Neden, lord of respite.

How long have you been playing?
Feast of Leviathan 2014 was my first event, so coming up on 2 years

How has the game changed since you've been playing?
I feel much more at home, know a lot of the faces and feel cofortable throwing myself into things as opposed to watching from the sidelines.  But apart from that since I've only been adventuring two years I can't say too much has changed.

Who have you learned the most from?
I've learned so much from so many people, but hats off to my fellow Neden members. They approached me when I was new and without friends/allies. They showed me how to be a successful quester, and most importantly how to have fun and become more known in the game.

What was your best moment IC?
Two moments spring to mind:

The moment when I became the first Neden petitioner to pass the new petitioners' requirements and become a full fledged member of Neden. I'm sure many of you have imagined or speculated as to what depraved acts of debauchery are  included in petitioning Neden, I will leave it to your colorful imaginations. I will however tell you that there was a live lobster involved - take from that what you will. When all was said and done I was given my pinstripe N, literally cut from one of Lord Nymbous' finest feasting Togas. (He literally gave me the shirt off his back)

Becoming a Lord of Hell and throwing myself into the center of an adventure moreso than I ever had before. I thouroughly enjoyed it. I think i'll volunteer for more stuff and see what happens

What was your best moment as a NPC/EH/Player?
At QOH this year during Phoenix telling me to 'just go lightning bolt the queen. Just do it.' and striking the queen down with my lightning less than 5 min later during 'kill the queen'.

What would you like to see changed or developed more in game?
More plot, drama and intrigue - I hear all these glory tales of burning down compounds and sites being live all night.

What advice would you give new players?
Despite all of your instincts - Ask questions, talk to strangers. Also have somebody give you a nickname that sticks to you like peanut butter. Also petition Neden.

What do you love most about the game?
Good Plot, Good People, and nightquests.

Who would you like to see the next interviews be with?  Please list three people.
Sarix (Sean Gustavis), Nymbous (Andrew Whitty), Syruss (Cal Marsden)

Anything else you'd like to take the opportunity to put into print?
I am super grateful for all the friends I've made adventuring, and am looking forward to many more.
Neden For Life.

Ten Questions with Marc "Ryu" or "Varik" Marcel Tetreault

How long have you been playing?

My first event was Feast of Leviathan 9. I was in High school and it was highly recommended by Andrew Adams that I go to an event, seeing how I was thoroughly enjoying fight practices he was holding. Since then, it has been off and on. I tried hitting 2-3 events every year starting in 2010, more recently playing much more often.

How has the game changed since you've been playing?

I remember when spells were at a 2 cost buy down and your restriction limited you to how fast you would learn your spells. PVC was the material for weapons and people were starting to try new materials. Since then, spell paths have been re-worked, we have new spells and new materials are being used.

Ten Questions with Hannah "Nhadala" Blood!

How long have you been playing?
Well, I was 19 for my first event back in 2010. I wore jean shorts and npc'd against Grimloch like a champion. I don't remember the name of the event, so if anyone can tell from the picture, that'd be great! It was at Creathorne farm. Anyway, I loved played the game, but unfortunately only had time for a few events over the years... This summer I've finally had the time to go to tons of events! I have time to work on Kita the Alchemist and Nhadala the converted 3-path. It's been great!

How has the game changed since you've been playing?
WELP! I guess the only change I really know if is changing from PVC to Bamboo weapons... I haven't been in the game consistently enough over the years to really know of anything else.

Who have you learned the most from?
It's hard to pick out specific people. I'm open, and not afraid to ask questions, so pretty much everyone has helped me out. I definitely have to give a shout out to Marc Tetreault and Conrad Barnes, though, for taking extensive amounts of time to explain spell paths to me. Coming back into the game as a caster was a whole new world!

What was your best moment IC?
I've had some fun times in character this year, but my two favorites were the Kita/Keela dying spree from capture the flag night quest at north south, and being possessed by a demon with Bohis at Folkstone questing.

What was your best moment as a NPC/EH/Player?
As a player, I feel I really stepped my game up at QoH this year. I broke my finger (still kind of broken) in the first five minutes. I popsicle sticked that bad boy and spent two days SPRINTING as one of the few people who had repair item in my kit. I loved seeing my efforts go to good use. I ended up getting a cup for Blood Bowl, which I feel is fun with my last name, and was my best event.

What would you like to see changed or developed more in game?
Oh man.... uh... potions! Brewing, using, disposable objects.... it gets a bit confusing and wasteful, and I'm not really sure where to go with it. I love potions, but I feel like.... it might need a rework.

What advice would you give new players?
DON'T BE AFRAID TO GO ALONE. I didn't come to events for YEARS because I was afraid of driving all the way down from Vermont alone. I finally did it this year for the dragon master questing event, and I had an absolute blast. Everyone is sweet and helpful, I ended up meeting a lot of people and as of last month I moved to New Hampshire. Never be afraid of who you are.

What do you love most about the game?
People owning who they are! If you want to be an aggressive fighter, do it! If you want to hardcore roleplay, do it! If you want to be a helpful healer, do it! You want to mess around and be chaotic, do it! Realms is an open world, and I love that people take advantage of it. Without people thinking outside of the box, the game would get boring really fast.

Who would you like to see the next interviews be with?
Marc Tetreault, Justin Theriault, Rae Nistler.

Anything else you'd like to take the opportunity to put into print?
All I have are old pictures of me as fighter NPC and fighter Nhadala!
On a more serious note, the game has been a huge stepping stone for the changes happening in my life. I'd like to thank everyone I've met for being a part of it. Last year I became very sick, and it became a huge set back on my career goals. Ever since then, I've been re-evaluating my previous steps before taking any new steps forward. Realms is a step that I do not, and will never regret. Every time I show up to an event where people I hardly knew 4 months ago come over and give me a big hug, I cannot being to express how much this has meant to me. I'm not sure where I would be without the realms, but all I know is that everything happens for a reason.
