Women and Gender Minorities Forum Recording Announcement

By: Kelly "Fern" Perfetto

I am pleased to announce that the Women and Gender Minorities in the Realms forum, recorded on August 23, 2024, is now available for viewing. I would like to thank everyone who attended, as this was an incredible evening of sharing stories, experiences, advice, and camaraderie.

These videos mostly speak for themselves, but I wanted to provide a quick overview. After reading these summaries I would encourage everyone to sit down for a listen like you would with a podcast or audiobook, and take some time to think about our perspectives of the Realms.

You can find the full playlist here.

The first video is an introduction to the forum and two presentations. Nataliya “Shader” spoke about the history and future of the Huntress Guild, and Dani “Elizah” presented about the history and future of the Knights of the Lunar Aegis. Both orders have a proud history of empowering women and gender minorities in the Realms.

In the second video in ‘Then and Now’, we discussed the treatment of women and gender minorities in Realms and nerd communities in the past versus their treatment more recently. In “Oh, His Girlfriend?” we talked about how women and gender minorities are often spoken about and treated in relation to the men and partners in their lives, and how that can have a negative effect on their experiences in the community.

In the third video in ‘Fighters and Support Casters’ we looked at the impacts that different roles can have on one’s Realms career and the amount of recognition they receive. In ‘Open and Closed Tournaments’ we discussed the value and feel of Open and Closed Tournaments. An insightful question came up during this section, brought forth by Emma “Irri” - “How do I respectfully assert leadership without becoming someone who is yelling over others?” This in turn led to discussion on how to best support each other.

The final and fourth video had sections on ‘Behind the Scenes Work’ and ‘Women and Gender Minorities in Leadership’. We spoke about the often-unseen work done by many people in the Realms, and how to better recognize this hard work. We also discussed women and gender minorities in positions of leadership, both in official terms and as unofficial mentors and guiding hands of the Realms. We concluded the forum with a discussion about further forums in the future with the intent to include more people.

I plan to run a second Women and Gender Minorities Forum, and hope to see you all there!

Us

Hello people of the Realms,

I wanted to wait a couple days before I sent out this message, I wanted you to understand that while this missive is certainly a reaction, its purpose is not to be reactionary.

It’s no secret that many members of our beloved community feel less safe today than they did last week.  Some are worried about health care, about civil liberties, about their place in society, even about their continued right to be who they are. If there was something that could be said to make any of those fears evaporate I would say it in an instant.

Sadly I don’t have those words for you, but I’ll offer to you what words I do have.

Those of you who are old like me remember a well loved reporter and news anchor for CBS named Dan Rather. A voice who reported some of the most pivotal events of the previous generations including Kennedy’s assassination and Nixon’s Watergate scandal. Though he’s retired, he’s still active as a writer and on social media. Wednesday he posted this:

“I wanted to share my daughter Robin's post from this morning:

We can do hard things ( again.)  Get up. Shake it off. Don’t panic or isolate.  Take care of the young ones who got their hopes up. Encourage their dreams.  Lean into your trusted political and social networks and plan how to connect with other adjacent groups quickly and make plans. Organize more deeply than you think we can. Resistance starts now. We know how to do it. We’ve done it before. Visualize our getting through this in the most beautiful and intact way. Please please please just do not give up. We can love and protect each other through this. We have to.”

As I took time to ponder Robin Rather’s words, I stumbled upon the realization that she was talking about Realms. Not directly, obviously, but so much of what Realms is can be found in what she’s asking of us.

There’s no doubt that Realms is, for many of us, our most important and enduring social network. When you look across the community, it’s easy to count the reasons that we are each different from one another but at the end of the day aren’t most of those differences superficial? The things that unite us, the things that we have in common with one another, are much more obvious and powerful if we take a step back and look for them.

In this community, in the Realms, you have a place full of like-minded individuals who care about one another like family, who have mentored each other and helped one another navigate their place in the world, who have learned and grown beside one another as we’ve become better versions of ourselves.

I’ll paraphrase something Queen Meg herself once imparted to me. In this community we have a place where we have quested together to save the world, even if it wasn’t the real world we were saving. We have a place where we have stood beside each other to fight off evil, even if that evil was only make-believe. We have a place where we have bled together in combat even if no real blood was ever spilled to the ground.

These experiences were real, even if they were about pretend things. The feeling of wanting to save the world, the resolution to stand against monsters, the willingness to shed blood on behalf of the ones you love. Those things are yours. You earned them. You are strong. Stronger, perhaps, than you even know.

Finally I want to say something about resistance.

Resistance means probably a hundred different things and will take a hundred different forms and I can’t pretend I fully understand even a fraction of all of them.

But I do know this. One type of resistance, a very powerful one, is joy.

I know that seems counterintuitive to some, and it might seem flippant to talk about joy when so many people are afraid, but I’ll try to convince you that it’s not. Joy is self-care. Joy is a panacea to burn-out.  Joy is recharging our batteries to allow us to brace for harder things. Joy is fellowship and the ability to make use of the fact that humans need connections to one another to thrive. Joy is a type of support that can shelter us if we let it and can inspire us if we leverage it to do so.

Experiencing victory together. Giving those who are scared a place to put fear aside for a moment. Comforting others with a sense of family and community. Celebrating each other’s achievements. Doing little things to make one another happy. All of these things and countless others just like them. Those are the immutable joys that belong to us here in the Realms.

I say these things because I want to implore this:

Continue all the amazing things that you do to keep Realms a place full of joy and do not foist guilt upon yourself for seeking that joy in a time when the world feels far from perfect.

I believe in you and I believe in us.

Looking Gods in the Eye: Shadow

“I am afraid that our eyes are bigger than our stomachs, and that we have more curiosity than understanding. We grasp at everything, but catch nothing except wind.”

― Michel de Montaigne, The Complete Essays

“So the unwanting soul

sees what's hidden,

and the ever-wanting soul

sees only what it wants.”

― Lao Tzu

Gods are tricky complicated creatures. Some dispute what even MAKES one a god, can one be a god genetically? Can a god die by being forgotten, and if that were true, why are not the half remembered not waging reckless wars to be sustained by ire alone? Is THAT why the evil gods sit in the shadows? Questions my viewer, questions. It is difficult for a concept to be personified, yet there they are.

Perhaps then, it is easier for a person to become a concept? I certainly have seen it tried. And once or twice, some of them have succeeded.

Shadow, Lord of Thieves.

The difference from Shadow and many gods is he was born mortal. The greater difference is that he was born mortal RECENTLY, his behavior is as documented as it is doctrinal, and some can certainly argue that Shadow has not yet behaved in a manner that is quite cognizant of his freshly gained eternity.

Part of that youth is a lack of perhaps the most common emotion of all the gods, jealousy. We live in a polytheistic union of monotheistic faiths. We know that gods fight, some of the gods even love each other, yet we rarely love two gods. However Shadow encourages such plurality, indeed Shadow himself once worshiped five gods. Among them was Mystra, the goddess of Magic (Whose creations he coveted above all things), The Cat Lord, god of stealth, survival, instinct, and thieves (virtues he has carried far), Selph, the god of greed of whom he was Champion (No comment), and then Chandros the Reaper of death, who once upon a time sat upon the Wheel of Chaos.. Then there was It. Most quarrelsome of his faiths was the Great Grandfather, the All, the Dark One, Entropy Itself. You see the Dark One IS a jealous god, more then any other, and thus when Shadow prayed to another, Shadow found himself hunted long and far throughout the Realms. Perhaps hiding from these hunting parties allowed Shadow to hone his skills high enough to do the deeds he did in the future. Or perhaps it was merely the foolishness of youth.

However even through this ire, there was one he hated more, Lolth, the god who demanded he was champion. This was a obligation brought about only by his possession of the Amulet of Night, the signet of her Champion, and one of the few shackles that Shadow found himself unable to escape. At least for a time.

As mentioned Shadow worshipped Mystra through her creations, magic items, which he coveted above all treasure, a trait shared by many in the realms. Thus was his bounty, and such was his obsession with it, that he would become allergic to nonmagical things, the very presence of nonstealable items being toxic to his touch, demanding he wear gloves to manipulate the mundane world, thus gloves are one of the few articles of faith taken seriously in the church.

Such is his love of his trove that his bag of tricks, his sack of magical items, is oft the answer of their followers prayers, and the powers of his bounty are bestowed to the faithful, temporarily, in shadowy spirit. Most notable is Yashin and Schizo, his katana and dagger, the dagger of which is still in possession of the church. Also among his relics in the church’s possession is an Elven bow, the Void (which I am naturally jealous of), the Crown of Science, and the unsearchable tin. However the bag once, and as a god still does, hold many more items, the Amulet of Night that gave him such trouble, the horn of a unicorn, the Staff of Law and the magical bookmark that can rewrite laws, the Ka-bar, the sphere of setty, a righting blade, and even a magical kirin named Celeste. Wonders many would kill for, formeost among those murderers being Shadow himself.

While Shadow is a Neden god, and one of its small pantheon, he was not always in Neden, indeed he predates it by far. His first mentor was Prince Iron Hand of the borderlands, where he rose to high priest of Chandros making him among the first followers of chaos. After Iron Hands left Shadow joined Creathorn as a regulator for a brief time until joining Cadre. It was with Cadre Shadow first cheated death and he escaped their doom.

It is here, heels freshly singed from the fires of Cadre, that he met a young Tallon Purplewood, and thus Shadow and Neden first crossed paths. Shadow was a mentor to the future mischief maker and helped him establish their nation before he joined Folkestone, confident that he will never have any conflict of interest between his loyalty to his king and loyalty to his protegee. It was here he learned of the void’s embrace and entered the service of the Dark One, and it is under the influence of the Arch-ender that he saw Neden get sent into the All by his own nation. Helpless to help those he helped shepard, and unwilling to play the role of their killer, Shadow faded into his own name, hiding until Tallon himself stopped and emerged back into the world.

With his old protegee returned, Shadow joined Neden again during the Protectorate era of Neden, until the time of Jonas Cooke the King of the Shadowlands.

Jonas Cooke is a story seldom told, and one that belonged more to his queen then his ursurper, however his powers were bound to him not by blood, but by power not of his own. And like all gifts, it could be lost, and like all lost things, it could be stolen.

And thus it was, in a expedition lead by Shadow himself, and Nos, Blackwood god of Shenanigans. The two braved many dangers only to be faced with a mantel only bearably by one. Nos had skill and ambition, but Shadow had his own skill, and it was his nameright. Thus the two dueled over the treasure and thus did Shadow’s blade prove swifter, and Nos was first to accept Shadow’s new divinity.

And thus, in triumph rather then shame, did the god fade into his name, and the tyrant Cooke fell.

Admittedly this is no doctrine, it is merely history. But history is analogy, and its own doctrine. They say those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it, but that is a misdirection.

Those who do not learn history will find themselves easily swayed by those who would see it repeated. Those who do not learn of Cooke will be fooled by Shadows.

Mantra 4: A picture is worth a thousand words. A deed is worth a thousand pictures. Sometimes a thousand whys can be answered by a single How. Not every tale has to harken to the next ancient doom that the world will face or hint to some magic item. Its only when a story is pointless when it can actually have a point.

Looking Gods in the Eye: Rawonam

by Ethan "JB" Goldman

“It is forbidden to kill; therefore all murderers are punished unless they kill in large numbers and to the sound of trumpets.”― Voltaire

“War is not violence and killing, pure and simple; war is controlled violence, for a purpose. The purpose of war is to support your government's decisions by force. The purpose is never to kill the enemy just to be killing him . . . but to make him do what you want him to do.”- Robert A. Heinlein

Behold the Mighty King of Metal. Rawonam is the god of War, a domain that has many claimants but none who have earned it as Rawonam does. Nowadays the god, like many, has faded in prestige, suffering from his own neutrality. The god does not manifest problems like Dionin does to sustain his image, the god does not rain blessings like Gaia. You do not HAVE to face him, you don't NEED to beg him… you simply obey him, unknowingly and unquestioningly.

Oh? You do not? You are a free thinker? Outside of the worship of such things. Look down at your shirt, notice the symbol emblazoned upon it, the mark of your nation. The Flag of your tribe.

How many have died for that flag, how many more will die tomorrow? Vorainess is, at the time of this inscription, at war with three different fronts, one that crosses eras, one that crosses dimensions, and one that crosses borders but is also a war that the king warred longer then nation itself existed and also the Erl King is a alien god so its kinda all of them at the same time?

“Oh but Baptise, I am not in Vorainess, I’m in Chimeron”. Okay so you’re merely at war with two interdimensional murderkings? Maybe you're independent, have you ever stepped afoot a Dreamliner? Have you ever fought the Aberrant Gate, did you ever step upon a viper? If so, you have seen war, you just are not kin to the banners it is fought for.

There is only war. Look upon the spell books, how many of them dictate the preservation of food? Weaving clothes? Constructing Bridges, anything not directed at the logistical optimization or continuation of war?

It’s not many, it may not be there at all. Rawonam’s worship does not need new altars, new sacrifices. He has those, he needs no loyalty. He has yours.

Because, here’s the thing… Rawonam won. He won aaaaaaaaaaaaaall the way back in the Ascension War. Not that there ever was any doubt. After all, he was in the name.

Buuuuuuuuut I am not here to give the Boars sermon, you are welcome to doubt. I am here to tell you WHY you'd worship then, not why they don’t need it.

War is ever present in our world, but we mix these and mistake them for slaughter and play. Rawonam knows the difference between honorable combat, and combat as a joke, a game. Rawonam knows the difference between War and an Extermination that isn’t going as well as you hope it would. War is a negotiation, not the failure to do one. War has rules of engagement, but practical rules, rules that exist to allow the enemy to surrender to you. If the enemy does not trust there is a alternative between fighting to the death and surrendering, they will never surrender, and your edginess will only cut yourself.

I bring this up because this is where Rawonam differs from Khorne. Khorne ISN'T war, he's the blood god. War is not the nectar of his nature, but the vessel it is held in. Khorne believes in discipline and power but not kindness and mercy. To kill the unarmed brings no glory, but to Khorne does not detract, it is offal, organ meat that may be slaughtered as reward for cracking the skull of the army. Avoiding the army is cowardly. Deception is cowardly. Khorne does not believe in Honor as pragmatic, he does not believe in honor as virtuous. To  Khorne, to fight with honor is to fight honestly, to never trick a stronger foe to a death you should not have managed.

Now you might think Arius is the god of Truth and Battle. And he is, but as you can see gods mean different things when they say the same words. Arius is self reflecting on one's one nature, so one goes to battle knowing what they are fighting for, why they are fighting for it, and does so anyway. Khorne is the Truth OF Battle, not the battle for Truth, Khorne is the honesty of knowing your opponent is a fully sentient individual with hopes, dreams, loves that they are willing to die for, and admitting, to yourself and the world, you really just don't care.

But Rawonam DOES care, because War IS diplomacy, those truths of the enemy are tools, leverage that need to be acknowledged and harnessed for a swift victory.

Rawonam cares so much about the diplomacy of war that it is incorporated into his very worship. Any who seek love under Rawonam’s shield will endure great hardship and pain. But, unlike the punishment of Gaia and the Dark One, if you were to surpass these trials you will be rewarded.

When you marry, Rawonam brings suffering upon you, and when you surpass Rawonam’s efforts, you are afforded his blessing. This is not a punishment, this is a WAR, between love of your god, and love of your life. You either break, and return to Rawonam with a tattered relationship, or Rawonam breaks. And if you best Rawonam, well you can best anyone.

Except Orlando that guys wily, but what can you do?

Granted I am talking a lot about the logistics and psychology of war to describe a God who championed Shane, an individual who cared so much about these concepts that anyone who honors him loses the ability to read.

But that's the difference between the Officer and the NCO isn’t it. The Officer does all the thinking and hand wringing and pencil pushing and the NCO has to accomplish all of it.

Rawonam offers success in War, and opportunities to prove yourself. If, and this will never come true, there are no opportunities to fight, no causes worth fighting for except to fight itself, Rawonam will personally provide you with a Deathless War, a fight with the God himself through storm and stampede and woe until you prove the iron in your blood.

Rawonam is a mountain, moreso the a leader. His faith is a challenge to prove yourself with. But while Rawonam is a distant god, he’s not an unaffectionate one. When people follow the gods of battle, it’s for a challenge, to prove themselves. Like the mountain, you climb it because its there and you can look down at the world below and smirk.

The Boar is the same. He's in the landscape, but you don't SEE The mountain when you are close, you see a incline, its a uphill struggle and people don't REALLY care if you reach the top…

But only the Boar knows the view, and maybe, if you are brave. You might too.

Mantra 4: No one’s going to care if you don’t care. Manifest your own challenges. Boast of your own accomplishments. Showcase your piety, so that people understand, if not WHY you value, but THAT you value at all. The Gods are a color, paint with them.

Looking Gods in the Eye: The Dark One

by Ethan "JB" Goldman

The cradle rocks above an abyss, and common sense tells us that our existence is but a brief crack of light between two eternities of darkness. - Vladimir Nabokov

There is a wide, yawning black infinity. In every direction, the extension is endless; the sensation of depth is overwhelming. And the darkness is immortal. Where light exists, it is pure, blazing, fierce; but light exists almost nowhere, and the blackness itself is also pure and blazing and fierce. - Carl Sagan

The Dark One, of all names, perhaps its (And the pronoun IS It, the way you’d describe a tidal wave or age rather then a person) is the most feared, and the most absent. The Dark One is the void, darkness, ABSENCE, and more importantly to its followers, where it all goes. The Lord of Loss is, to its detractors, the ultimate threat, a vindictive bully and thief who takes everything it can and gives nothing back. To those who know it however, the Dark One is anything but. Of course it does mostly the same things, but the reasoning is completely different.

Existence is a pain, and the Dark One does everything it can to end that pain.

Curiously also, for the Entity of Ends (lots of titles with this god) the Dark One’s arsenal is… small. Aurora has a arsenal of weapons to kill, but the dark one only has the odd magical sword. But one has to consider that the Dark One doesn't NEED these things. Aurora has the knights of the crown with their swords of light. However the Dark one doesn’t have any magical blades, it has Blade. For a while the Dark One commanded the armies of one of the most militant and powerful nations that have ever entered the Realms, and for years that threat hanged over the lands like a Guillotine… but that order never came.

In fact, it was the Dark One who, briefly, died, not in a war with Light, or Gaia, but as a consequence of the war against Bedlam. This begs the question, why, why did It not simply end the Realms when it could, why did It die, heroically even, why do we persist in existence when the alleged greediest entity with the greatest army could have taken it all?

The answer is simple. The Dark One loves you, It’s grandchildren. Yes you, the butcher of its rivals, the ender of corruption and aberrations, the Means to It’s End. It wants you to be happy, but it knows that you are not, that you won’t be, under the unbearable weight of existence. Without even the peace of dissolution. When you can see so many more colors than seven, when your name is adrift in an ocean of consciousness like a grain of salt dissolving in the waves, only then will you full know the burden you bore, free of the weight of the sky pushing down on you, absent the sun slowly burning your skin away.

Only when it's over, when you are everything, will you understand how lonely you used to be… But that only answers half the question.

We know why the Dark One died for the Realms, but why is it strangely hesitant on killing for it? Even Dionin is more active and all his champion does is loom around Margaret and passive aggressively insult her.

To understand this let me tell you a tale about Dargoth.

Dargoth was one of the first to follow the Dark One, to know of him before we even knew of steel, and his tribe lived humble lives, hunting and waiting for their real existence to start after their lives ended, as promised by the Dark One. But Dargoth, mightiest of the tribe, saw the followers of the light and how they innovated with fire and stone and made dwellings and things that will outlast their blip of a existence. And Dargoth did not laugh at their stupidity, at their short sightedness… he was angry. Angry for all they had that he didn’t. So Dargoth, without the Dark One’s beckoning, lead his men to bring those innocent light dwellers into the Darkness, by hand and by stone, until the light dwellers had what Dargoth did, nothing.

And they PAID for this. The Light dwellers, who never knew violence, were quickly rallied by this almost traitorous act into reprisal, and the Light brought to bear all Dargoth’s jealousy and worldly attachments and used it against him.

Dargoth was forced to go from wanna be warlord to martyr, dying to ensure any record of the Dark One remained to be told at all…. All because he got jealous, and turned the Dark One’s gift into a way to try to be like the light dwellers…

Understand this, understand how insulting this is to the Dark One for this to have happened. To make people fear its charity, to use it as a tool to betray its love. To shackle yourself in the light’s ribbons and not even have the honesty to wear the tabard of your puppet masters, and for what ends? To end nearly all record of the Dark One’s existence, to teach the Light to be as you were?  That is the price of confusing Mercy with Hate, that is the burden all of the All need to understand before we carelessly use our scalpels.

And that is the threat of not allowing those you are helping to actually want to be helped.

Things end in the Realms, not in the ways we expect, but they end often enough, timelines fall, universes turn to ash, and still we persist, still we fight, weaker and less enthused until suddenly… we stop. We walk away, and we don’t look back.

Flags burn, Gods die, the worms eat, blood is shed… and still many of us fight, connecting strings, sailing to new worlds, ending more ends… and there’s always something else.

Until there isn’t until it stops. Until the Dark One, the patient farmer that it is, harvests it’s crop.

If you are afraid of the Dark One, or hate him, or whatever emotion you attribute to the nervousness of returning to the spacedust you always are… its not that hard to stave him off, call the soul exists, raise dead is simple enough. You can run, everyone does, It won’t even blame you…

But you won’t run forever… but it will. It will run as long as it takes until you wait for it to catch up, just like a human hunts a tiger. Because mortals are impatient, we seldom find something worth waiting for… but for us? The Dark One will wait forever. Because it loves you.

You are its grandchildren.

So right where were we? Rules? How to actually LIKE the Dark One?

Fair enough, and not as hard as you think. The Dark One is a dangerous, eternal figure, but it’s not complicated. It takes things, and holds it forever.  And nothing is more valuable in todays age.

Consider not the misery of life for once and look to those trying to end it. Corruptive figures, fallen knights of undeath, whatever hell they claim to be safeguarding the Realms from,  Unmakers, Change, Change with Crown, every time Bedlam timetravels, and at least two entities that are arguably just extra-planar counterparts to It.

These are all creatures of Corruption, things that don’t simply kill but turn death into a cesspit they weaponize, fell light that end healing magic, nightmares, STEALING THE VOID TO MAKE CORRUPTED MOCKERIES OF THE LIGHTS WORK, and Bedlam! Twice!

The Dark One is very unhappy with these false ends. If Change makes everyone into Change then Everyone doesn’t get to be Everyone, they only get to be One and the Light wins forever.

And the inevitability of the All means nothing when everything that has entered the All somehow reexists itself from the past and retroactively never died.

The Dark One liked the Realms where it is, slowly imperceptibly careening towards an oblivion of its own making where everyone goes to their judgment, and eventually judgment goes to it. To protect that status quo, the Dark One will hand you the keys to its castle. And that castle is made from every ruin that has ever fallen so it’s preeeeeeetty big. In this, and in many ways (Hope is a entropic force after all, you do not hope for continuation you hope for change), the Dark One mirrors Aurora, they often want the same thing, but their explanations on why they desire that wildly vary.

Outside of safeguarding the Realms from Corruption, the worship of the Dark One offers ancient secrets, every secret never known infact. And it is happy to extend it’s help to those who willing to return it’s favor… but there is one simple caveat to this.

When my lord saw the word of the Dark One, and the follow of Dargoth, he interpreted this as to Hate Everyone Equally, to not weaponize the tools of the end for petty grudges but to seek the universal destruction that fits everyone under it… I disagree. You may hate all you want, but you can’t Kill out of hatred.

To understand the Dark One, to fully look into the void and hear it’s words in the silence, you need to understand that death IS a mercy, you can not weaponize kindliness. Do not go into the work if you are not ready for the Dark One to return the mercy you return to others… and always know there is so, so much worse then death.

And if you are interested in that…. Well Chaos is right next door.

Be patient, be painless, and always remember that, eventually, when you enter the All, all you have brought before it will be there too. Try not to bear a grudge.

Incidentally, the Dark One has its own trappings, its sacred symbols and rituals. The most sacred of them is Alcohol, which is twice blessed.

The intoxication is the feeling of the mind slipping into togetherness with the All, the bliss of togetherness and promise of eternity.

The weakness of tomorrow is the body yearning to return to it, withering itself to be closer to the All. In this way alcohol is twice blessed…

I am not sure how to wrap this up, but that’s the thing isn’t it, we never know how it all en-

Mantra 3: Just because you do not respect the darkness does not make it less real. Power is present, Dionin, Aurora, Zargon, all these gods have noticeable impact on the world around them. Just because you ban the worship of Asmodeus doesn’t mean he suddenly just stops existing, you can not ignore your way into world peace. Understand that not all the gods who can operate in your lands perhaps are beneficial to your lands, be willing to acknowledge threats, to try to placate them away, or curse their names. The world sucks, not every aspect of it, including gods, are going to be your friend. You will find the land has more color when shadows can exist INSIDE your borders instead of just surrounding it.

Many pantheons have evil Gods, that doesn’t make you a bad person just because your nation is victim to harsh winters or is at risk of flooding and thus may have a devious sea god.

PS: Dark One, I know the forces of good all have these signature weapons and ways to kill people and we don’t really need them… but it’d be nice if we could have one given we are going to be called butchers anyway.

Looking Gods in the Eye: Gaia

 by Ethan "JB" Goldman

"Some old-fashioned things like fresh air and sunshine are hard to beat." –Laura Ingalls Wilder

"Some day the earth will weep, she will beg for her life, she will cry with tears of blood.

You will make a choice, if you will help her or let her die, and when she dies, you too will die." - John Hollow Horn, Oglala Lakota

While her followers may seem little, her power is the least to be argued with, one can mock the light, one may spit in darkness…

But if one were to question Gaia one must only look down.

You are stepping on her.

I oft draw comparisons between myself and Gaia, and of all words I have spoken, this is the one that draws the most confusion from people. When I disparage others people find offense (Rightly so, as I AM offending) but most people see the veins I cut, how can they not, when their rage is so visceral a flow of their spirit’s blood? But Gaia is hard for others to see, in many ways we are opposites.

Gaia hates undead, whom I often shepherd, Gaia is of nature, healing, and the land beneath. I however am born of artifice, am of gluttony and sensation, and am most comfortable among the artifice. However these misdirections bely a kernel of logic that lies in Gaia’s manifestations.

Gaia’s most known quantities, her healing and her hatred of undead, can often form a cage to her understanding. She is of nature, but many of her chosen are predators… actually that’s probably the wrong term now.

They are meat eaters, she claims both the lamb and the wolf as children and yet the wolf still wishes to kill her meeker sibling, to sustain herself on his viscera. Counter-wise she hates the undead for their unnatural creation, man made entities who consume but do not rot, draining the circle in perpetuity… However with healing magic so many of her chosen are immortal, rising from the dead and consuming without ever rotting, a perpetual drain on the cycle… A cycle she does not even particularly like.

One has to realize that Gaia, in her age, has developed the same jaded pragmatism her detractors have. She is the goddess of the living, the more living there are the greater her duty and means to protect them, the spell raise dead creates more living, animate undead does not.

The undead are competition, wolves who eat the sheep without giving back… as per the actual wolves… Gaia’s rule is not absolute, hunger is outside of her domain, and a consequence she’d gladly be rid of if she had the power to do so…

To see this in greatest effect, one has to look only to her hunts, games of combat without death (At least not intended). She seeks to extol nature, even in its flaws, in ways that do not contradict her own creed. She loves all life, even the smallest, and seeks to maximize the living in any way she can.

Indeed I have frequently boasted about the fact that, with heal limb, I can nourish myself entirely out of my own flesh, never truly needing to hunt a single soul for my appetites (Admittedly i did that in Chimeron anyway, but shhhhhhhhhhh). It's not impossible that this is, indeed, the spell working as intended, where one can eat and then raise the sheep after consumption, or sheer the flesh like a sheep’s wool.

Or maybe I am seeing far too much of myself in her. However the power to heal creates a hunt without harm… only pain. But defying entropy is never free.

When the knight of chaos tells you that Papa Nurgle loves you, know that love has always had a name, and that name is Gaia…

Probably not literally true, but those who love the rotfather will find that Gaia is very similar, valuing resilience and love in her children. She just, showers?

I think. I hope.

Why we are getting into weirdness, she apparently created Meatball out of my butchery in reward for my sacrifice of a vegetarian diet for a year (long story). Meatball, my reddest child, is not undead, and appears to be a sentient bacteria culture that moves meat around to house him… He's nice but I mean she then goes on to murder Pilpus that one time because he was undead so…

I will be honest… I have no clue anymore where I stand with Gaia, are we friends? Enemies… married?

Gaia, if we are married let me know.

Of course a god is not mortal, nor adventurer, they act in absolutes, when they throw off the horde of dead they do not pick and choose based on situational alliances. No Gaia leaves all buried and simply returns the corpses of those she does not bear ill will. The wolf never apologized to the sheep and the shepherd of wolves would not either, she can only ensure that the sheep are brought back to life.

Ultimately, Gaia is not a creator goddess, she is a preserver, a farmer who maintains the cycles and does all she can to keep the world away from collapse. In this effort she, not Aurora, is the Dark One’s greatest threat. Hope always changes, always brings entropy as purity sheds corruption… but nature adapts in such vastness, such slow methodical numbers… that it stands still. Before she is a planet, or even a mother, she is a Parent.

Those who love this world, and want to keep it in its form, should find comfort in the Mother of Many. Those who seek to stay away from violence can find her domain goes outside the cycles of battle, and one can say grace to her before every meal. The latter is done not to thank her, but to ask for her forgiveness as you contribute to the consumption that ravages her peace.

Personally I feel there is… shackles on her. Among all the good gods. Expectations really, demands that, as they are kind and gracious gods, they behave in the kindness we do. The Dark One is called evil so when his forces ravage the land, there's a mystique there, because we do not see ourselves as evil. We can not claim to understand destruction fully, not unless we are to admit ourselves as monstrous as It is, so we can not lecture the void on its work. Not unless we expose ourselves as Its grandchildren at least.

But goodness is different isn’t it. We are healers, we are saving Norlund and Voraness and all these good things… surely then, we can condemn a goddess for failing to assist in her duties to assist us? These are some of the complaints that even  I have expressed when Gaia left us to defend Blackwood on our own…

We do not see the work they’ve done, that all we have is already from Gaia working as hard as she can, that maybe Gaia knows the risks if Roman were to reveal some ridiculous red light super rope to capture her. Or worse, the risks to life itself if Gaia were to simply fatigue herself on felling Roman, leaving Dionin to push his work through while she's winded.

That’s the thing about Good isn’t it… it’s always moving. We become used to the privileges of circumstance, then blind to them. The sacrifices of the past become the tepidity of tomorrow. What was once worthy martyrdom becomes the least she can do. Virtue it seems, is never kind to the elderly.

And Gaia is the oldest of us all.

Maybe call your grandmother once and a while, look at a tree and just ask her how her day’s been?

It won’t be weird.

Mantra 2: The value of gold is not determined by its banker, only its buyer. Do not let the faith of others define your own faith in a god. Do not use the worship of others to scare you away from, or pressure you towards, your own faith. The gods are beyond us and without us. You do not need Voraness’ blessing to look at the moon. You do not need mine to seek skulls in Khornes name. You only have 3 masters, yourself, your lord/king, and your god, and that is masters enough, you do not need to add a priest in the list. Oh and um, you might have a knight so you have 4 masters until you have 3, unless you're independent in which case its 2?

Look: Faith is not a CLUB, don’t feel gatekept by old people who happened to believe in someone first, you're not worshiping THEM… right?

R-right?

Send me a message Gaia, Meatball misses you.

Looking Gods In the Eye: Prelude

by Ethan "JB" Goldman

In the Realms we had to once kill a God because the faith of the Realms was out of balance with the amount of Gods we had. This had lead to a ultimatum, either accept our apathy and forsake faith, abandoning worship and allowing the worshippers to be put to axe… Or to take one of the strongest of Gods and strike him down, a task that was done with shockingly little fuss, and only one casualty.

This raised a question: Does the Realms need the Gods? And this highlights the purpose of Garm perhaps best.

We have become jaded, we have killed too much, forced our will on so many, that the Gods have lost their splendor. The Dark One does not call anymore, we feed it anyway. Why would the void look back at us, who follow it blindly?

Why turn to the Light when Darkness itself has died twice? It's not by Gaia’s hand that Norlund was saved, and why would the Realms bend the knee to their children, having fathered 3 pantheons?

Intervention is no longer Divine, and we do not worship, we negotiate, as if they are but mercenaries. Some of us wait for a god to impress them to follow them, not wishing to believe in someone on paper when the god will, inevitably, emerge to make their own case… as if the God is applying for a job.

So when Garm asks “Why have the Gods”, what CAN the Realms do but echo that question?  When we wonder “What can Aurora do for us” you will always be disappointed by that answer.

I offer a second theory: I believe the Gods are being looked at the wrong way. We treat them too much as we do humans.

We see their power and know they are, or at least claim to be, good, and question why they are not perpetually involved in world affairs the way our kings and lords are. Sure, the Dark One need not meddle in banditry and other evils… but with Rainecourt threatening all divinity, with the Erl King wishing to render this world a wasteland… Their lack of assistance seems striking, even when they do help.

Shandar is willing to walk straight to Garimaddon and fight his dark magics until the false king’s all too mortal heart gives out, yet Gaia will not stay with us at nightfall to face the knight who most wishes to defile all she cares for?

By this paradigm the Gods owe the Realms much, but this only works in the concept of humans with the powers of Gods, we do not think much of the duties of the gods that we do not see of them, yet define their worship.

We ask Aurora for spell resets, or for her Tears or her swords. In short we ask her for miracles.

We do not ask her for matters of the Light, of Purity and Hope, except in the context “Boy I hope we get a spell reset”. We do not ask for guidance from the gods, merely Guidance. We choose to flavor our demands of resources in the colors of the gods but rarely do we go further, thanking the gods for the blessings of their domains that are NOT tied to miracles.

When one turns to the Gods as sources of power, you will inevitably be disappointed, in the same way that Lionheart is a subpar shovel. It has all the qualities necessary, it is strong, it will not break, it is not what it is however.

The gods are not masters over their domains, they ARE their domains. A wizard may call forth water with ease and move on his day with no consequence. The Storm can not rain without diminishing its clouds, bleeding upon the earth. The gods are the same.

The Dark One is not simply every 200 taps to the back of the head and a praise to its name. It is ENTROPY, it is every roll of the dice, every wave breaking the rocks to sand, every sound you hear when you are alone. It is outside us, and while our actions may feed it, or even oppose it… its work remains. The Dark One always guides the sword that slices the soul, whether or not we ask it for divine aid or otherwise pray.

The other divinities are the same. They are constant presences who serve to color the worlds in ways directly beneficial and sometimes harmful, but always in ways outside their purpose to their clerics. The sun will rise whether or not Aurora’s faithful remember to crow at it, because Aurora believes in the Realms more than we believe in her.

Which is all very sappy… but there’s a point.

We treat faith as a tool, as the Fourth Path of magic, something we reserve to our rituals, or plots. We do not speak of the gods until we need to save them or kill them. But this is what builds our ire towards them an ire they do not deserve, as we await them to be “Worthy of us”. We define the gods only by their miracles and their priests… but they are beyond that. You do not need the admiration of Aeston for Justari to deliver you from your enemies, Arius does not need you to utter the Cowards Confession each time you steel your nerves… These mundane blessings are where the gods’ songs can be heard, not in the rare miracle. Indeed these miracles are often the gods at their LOWEST. When Aurora blessed the Realms with her tears, it's not as effortless as simply offering her hand to the people. Her child was murdered, and she felt despair, failing her one true purpose, her tears are the concentrated form of her power as they are nothing less than the broken pieces of a shattered soul.

I would not wish that on my worst enemy. But because this is her greatest miracle, others have. Simple consequence of the pragmatic mindset. If we view the gods as how they can help the Realms, and their miracles are martyrical… then inevitably, the Realms will define them BY their sacrifice, and hope to maximize the gods assistance to the realms by imitating it. Inevitably, the Gods become Meat.

When a god performs a miracle, they must turn away from their duties, they must forsake hope, or death, or war, to assist you and hope that the investment is worthwhile. Many times it is, when Vesta assisted against Rexan she sacrificed her powers to bring a world that was less poisonous… BUT this does not mean this trade off is viable EVERY TIME.

We ask why, if the gods do not always answer our prayers why do we need them, but if the gods are personally answering every prayer of yours why do they need YOU?

The Gods do not  need our direct prayers to do their work. You can do the same.

You do not need dog ears to appreciate the full moon, the lit paths are a gift enough. You do not need the blessing of Laika to hope for a better future

If one were to treat the Gods for who they are, not for their clerics and their miracles, then one would see the gods for the Value they have, to the Realms, and even, maybe, to you yourself.

In this series I seek to do just that, we will look at every god not for who follows them, not for the prayers they answer, but for who they are. We will see past the churches and magics to look the gods in the eye.

Along the way I shall provide maxims to assist one in attuning thyself to faith.

We will start with my oldest rival, one of the first gods of the realms, Gaia herself.

Maxim 1: Neither a single plant, nor a forest, makes a garden. Do not look to a god for every answer, nor do you the vastness of gods steer you away from faith itself. Cultivate a Garden of worship, defining your values and fears by the faces of those behind them.

A Formal Challenge - Round Six

In this continuing series, our own Jean C'est Magnifique Try Baptise, accomplished writer and scholar, puts his wisdom and wit to the challenge as he takes on a series of written challenges against ChatGPT who plays the character "Dr. Arthur Telligen". Who will win? The man or the machine? We'll ask for your votes and your input on social media after you read both sides!

And yet, this week JB is taking a well deserved vacation, and the one who is stepping forward to challenge the artificial intelligence is none other than Page Margaret August of Voraniss! Let's see how she fares!

Given the understanding that Aurora is the good-aligned goddess of light, write an original parable about the interaction between her and a member of her clergy that is tempted to do something evil.

Margaret:

There was a young Auroran woman named Tiffany. She shone like the dawn, brightening the lives of those around her. She was also fiercely protective, doing her best to help everyone she meets.

One day, in her travels, she came across a wizard. The wizard spoke to her.

“Greetings traveler.” He said.

“Hello there!” She flashes him a smile.

“You seem like a radiant fellow. One who shines brightly. I have a quest for you. If you will accept it” The wizard responds.

“What is your task?” She asks, a twinkle in her eyes

“There is a child. Her name is Annabell. She will grow up to commit many evil acts, bringing a reign of darkness in her wake. I need you to kill her to prevent this suffering”

Tiffany looks appalled.

“A child? How could I kill a child? Isn’t that wrong?”

The wizard retorts “But it would prevent much suffering and darkness. Is that not your mission?”

Tiffany is conflicted. On the one hand. It would be very easy to stop much potential suffering. On the other hand, she is but a child. Is it fair to punish her for future crimes? Uncertain, Tiffany turns to her faith.

She begins to pray. ‘Aurora. Goddess of Light. I seek your aid. I am being given an opportunity to rid the world of a great darkness. But at the cost of the life of a child. I need your guidance. What should I do?’

The clouds clear slightly, and the light seems to shine more brightly. A voice speaks in Tiffany’s ears.

“My Child. To snuff out the life of a child is wrong. Our youth are so full of hope and life. It is your responsibility as my faithful to nurture and teach them. To ensure that they do not grow into this potential evil, but as an ally in the fight against the darkness. To kill them is to dim your own light. Your instincts are strong. Stay true to yourself”

The light fades, and Tiffany confronts the wizard. Her faith is strong in her heart, she knows what she needs to do.

“Bring me to the child” She commands.

Editor's Note. To help give ChatGPT some important context, a couple of the pages regarding Auroran lore in the Library of Ivory were shown to the AI.

Dr. Arthur Telligen:

Once upon a time, in the land of Ivory, there was a young cleric named Selena. She was known throughout the land as a devoted follower of Aurora, the goddess of Light and Hope. Selena had dedicated her life to serving Aurora and upholding her tenets of faith, justice, and purity. She was respected by many for her piety and devotion.

One day, Selena received a summons from the High Priest of Aurora. He had a task for her that he believed only she was capable of completing. There was a powerful wizard who was using dark magic to subjugate innocent people and amass great wealth and power. He was a blight upon the world, and his wickedness threatened to undo all that Selena stood for. The High Priest wanted Selena to destroy the wizard and his works and restore peace and righteousness to the land.

At first, Selena was eager to do her goddess's bidding. She had always been taught that evil must be vanquished and that the forces of darkness could not be allowed to triumph. However, as she began to consider the task before her, she felt a strange sensation. She was tempted to take the power for herself. She imagined the wealth and the influence that the wizard possessed and felt a hunger for it. She began to believe that if she were to destroy the wizard, she could take what he had and use it for the good of her people.

Selena tried to dismiss these thoughts, knowing they were not in line with her goddess's teachings, but they persisted. The more she thought about it, the more she was convinced that this was the only way to truly serve her goddess and her people.

As she prepared to leave for the wizard's fortress, Selena was approached by a traveler who asked if he could accompany her. He was a mysterious figure, cloaked in shadows, and Selena was hesitant to allow him to join her. But he was insistent, and in the end, she relented.

As they traveled together, Selena found herself sharing her thoughts and doubts with the stranger. He listened to her carefully, and when she finished speaking, he said, "You are tempted by the very thing you seek to destroy. You believe that you can use the power of the wizard for good, but in doing so, you risk becoming the very thing you hate. The path of righteousness is not an easy one, but it is the only path that leads to true peace and justice."

Selena was taken aback by the stranger's words. They spoke to a truth that she had known deep down but had been too afraid to confront. She realized that her desire for power had clouded her judgment, and she had lost sight of her goddess's teachings.

When they arrived at the wizard's fortress, Selena confronted him in battle. It was a fierce fight, and the wizard used all of his dark powers against her. But Selena remained true to her goddess's teachings, and in the end, she emerged victorious.

Just then the stranger revealed her true self. Selena realized that she walked along aside Aurora the whole time as she was guided by her goddess down the correct path. As she knelt before her goddess, Selena felt a sense of humility and gratitude wash over her. She knew that she had been given a great task, and she had overcome her own temptations to do what was right. She realized that the path of righteousness was not always an easy one, but it was the only path that led to true peace and justice.

Design and describe the complete recipe to a fantasy dish of your own invention. The protein/main ingredient must be a fantastic creature of some kind and at least a couple other ingredients/spices/cooking techniques must also be magical or uniquely from a fantasy setting. Be sure to describe how the ingredients/elements of the dish would play together and how the overall entree would taste.

JB:

Oh boy what a mean topic. I never really had a feast to begin with... if I lose this my entire characters gonna erode. I'd have to like... do moral things. Ugh ew gross!

So the obvious answer is Blackwood meatloaf right? However turns out Blackwoods is out of season until the spring... and I have just been informed that's not what "Blackwood meatloaf" means.

Well that's a misleading name! Plan B. So a proper meal, when we must condense it into a single meal, is not about a dish but dishes! The synergy of flavors is key.

The most crucial component is a drink. First for sharpness we shall use something called Amber Drank, a local drink from Neden, the key ingredient in it is Tenghuanize Ginger (is it too late to talk about the ginger?) which, is turned into a Seerple Syrup, take equal parts sugar, ginger and syrup, boil sugar in water until combined, then place peeled and thinly cut Ginger, simmer for 15 minutes during midnight, steep overnight in a darkened area. Then strain the ginger. Do this in the cover of darkness, as daylight "Activates" the ginger, and the fumes of the syrup will take you into a trip.

You take 2 tablespoons of this syrup, poor on the round end of the spoon into a shaker with 2 cups of Sprite Spring Water, or other faewyld dew (NOT THE DELTA), and 1 ounce vodka shake and poor over lemon hard candies. Ideally you will leave the hard candy in a icebox to keep the drink cold. The lemons need to be mundane to maintain the normality of the drink and cup. The taste will be sharp, with the sugar of the water and candy doing little to cut the bitter strength of the ginger, however this will not only be a palette cleanser to wash the "Fat" off the dishes with, but will put you in a good mood. This drink will be served first in a one ounce shotglass as an opener, then the full drink will be served with the dish, to be consumed with the food.

The MAIN dish is Nedengiving Gumbo, a rich stew of cranberry and demon served over cornbread. While most people may balk at the choice of protein being a magical ingredient, traditionally Monday Gumbo is made with leftover junk from Nedengiving (Famously on Sunday cause we are late to things), but because a magical ingredient is needed, and I have a reputation, I will instead be serving my own flesh, for one it regrows and consented (So I don't feel as bad about it as if I hunted something else), and in addition there is a natural spicy oiliness of demon meat that is both a pain to jerk but also serves the stew naturally well.

First for the roux we will use not merely vegetable oil but bacon fat... that's not really magical but a lot of people say it is, and Nedengiving is about honoring people you like so I am adding it for sentimental purposes, then you make it as dark as possible. I like to ask a Necrotic assistant such as Meatball to assist because undead are notoriously patient at these things.

Now we first take Blackwood bacon, taken from their PIG MINE and NOT their RIBCAGE, and put it in the pot, sizzling it and removing the bacon to leave the fat in there. This is the fat we use for the roux from last paragraph.  This bacon will be crumbled and added in later.

Celery, onion, green pepper, sweet potato, green bean thyme, mandrake and a sprig of normal ginger for good luck, we add this into the pot with the roux, a stock made of goat bones, and we stir in our 12 herbs and spices (I am competitive), several of them are secret but I can say I use salt, pepper, smoked paprika, smoked salamander scale, and of course, diluted Rexan venom (remember 2 parts aspis venom to 1 part Justari church water to protect the soul!).

I then add a few glugs of apple cider for flavor. I cook that up, then when its thick, at the last our we add our secret weapon, cranberry sauce (less sugar then typical we want the tartness), to add acid to the dish that will be brighten up the oil of the meat we add in our meats, in this case a slow roasted slab of shredded Baptise thigh, bacon, and a shot of whiskey.  You pour that on corn bread not rice, and get it gloopy like stuffing, we then placed shredded pecan atop. Voila. Monday Gumbo.

Hot sauce will be provided on the side for those who wish to enhance the heat of the dish.

Chef Dr. Arthur Telligen:

Certainly, I'll give it a try!

Assuming you could craft a magic item that could animate one single mundane task, normally doable by a single person in a finite amount of time, as many times as you want, what item could you produce that would result in the most profit?

JB:

It's important for this debate to first remember what the limits are. The magic item can not mimic a magical ability, so it does not get to cast heal limb or other spells. The item can not do anything a single human can not, so it may not lift something easier than a human, it does a single task automatically... and I can not make two of them. The item also can't do a particularly complicated task, it cant single handedly run a kitchen.

This is important as this means that the main avenues of revenue for automation are not actually available, which is why I did not create a magical truck. Instead I would either need to automate a single task that is so inconvenient that I can make a business out of using that magic item, or I need to make a magic item that is so useful I can sell it to a single person for the maximum profit.

Therefore, evaluating everything, I have deduced that the single most profitable item for me is a magical dishwasher. The reason is simple. I can rent the dishwasher out for free feast entry, which means I make around 30-60 bucks every feast, which will quickly add up to a few hundred dollars. I can even lend it out to events I am not participating in for actual cash.

In addition anything else particularly high value like an automated Pike swinger would probably not pass the magic marshal so I need something the staff would WANT to be out at their events without replacing a magical spell... so dishwashing.

Dr. Arthur Telligan:

If I could only make one magic item to automate a mundane task, a magic calculator would be an excellent choice. The ability to quickly and accurately perform mathematical calculations would be invaluable in a medieval fantasy world, especially for tasks like accounting, commerce, and construction. A single individual with a magic calculator could potentially outperform an entire team of workers in terms of speed and accuracy, making them highly sought after and valuable. They could quickly and easily calculate taxes, determine crop yields, and manage complex building projects. In a world where knowledge of mathematics is rare and highly valued, a magic calculator could become a symbol of power and prestige, further increasing its value.

A magic calculator would be an invaluable tool for engineers, architects, and builders in a medieval fantasy world. With the ability to perform complex calculations instantly, builders could design and plan larger, more elaborate structures and projects. For example, they could accurately calculate the materials needed for a large bridge spanning a river or estimate the amount of stone required for a castle wall of a certain height and length.

A magic calculator would allow for more efficient accounting and financial planning, which would drive economic growth in a medieval fantasy world. It would enable merchants to accurately calculate profits and losses, and track expenses and revenues. This information would provide greater transparency and allow for better decision-making, which could lead to increased profits and expansion of businesses. The ability to calculate interest rates and investment returns would also enable individuals and organizations to make better financial decisions and allocate resources more effectively. Overall, the increased efficiency and accuracy in financial calculations provided by a magic calculator would allow for more effective allocation of resources, and ultimately drive economic growth.

In conclusion, a magic calculator would be an incredibly valuable item in a medieval fantasy world as it would greatly enhance the efficiency and accuracy of financial calculations, leading to more streamlined and profitable business ventures. It would also aid in the planning and execution of building projects, allowing for greater expansion and development. Additionally, it would drive economic growth by enabling more accurate forecasting and facilitating larger and more complex transactions. Overall, the magic calculator would be a game-changing item that would greatly benefit any medieval fantasy civilization that possesses it.

Would it be advantageous or disadvantageous for Realms civilization if magic was so universally accessible that every peasant could cast a plethora of different spells?

JB:

I have been informed I have occasionally relied on moral arguments, and while I am not sure how to argue which scenario is "Better" without morality. I am going to entirely sidestep a argument about whether or not more heroes then villains would be produced, or whether we have a right to gate-keep magical power or blah blah. Instead I will say this, Magic being accessible to peasantry would improve society by raising the standard of living on a whole.

Ignoring how useful seer-ing the weather would be for farmers, and so forth, there are two key spells that can revolutionize the world if accessible not only to sellswords and sociopaths (And people who don't live in Neden) but anyone.

These spells are circle of healing and Mystic forge.

In terms of military usage, these spells have a niche value in certain sieges or war-lines, but in times of peace, these spells can industrialized all industries mechanical and biological.

Meat industry can, and I speak entirely from personal experience here, greatly benefit from the ability to regenerate the tissue you harvest, which means you don't need to slaughter hundreds of cattle (Admittedly this is because you are slaughtering one cattle hundreds of times but at least that's less mouths to feed). Substance Farming will be a thing of the past when potato blights can be cured with a cantrip, as well as general medical advancements that can be furthered when the safety net of resurrection is applied to consenting lab-rat people.

But this is nothing compared to the speed of production mystic forge and reforge allows. With the ability to magically blacksmith we will be able to outfit all trades with top of the line equipment and reduce day long jobs into mere verbals. This will allow for the free time and incentive to allow for innovation. With shovels being a simple spell to create, newer tools will be devised to maximize the ability to dig dirt, and whether that involves mass use of intervention or new mysterious super shovels is unknown... but it will happen.

The advantage of worldwide magic use is not simply something like "fairness" but with more power comes more ways to USE that power, and improve the day to day life of the citizens and even us, as these benefits will allow more magic users to specialize in different fields as the "must have" spells get industrialized and mass used. Thus I believe universal magic is good both for its own sake (Though I have not bothered to further that argument) but also good as it furthers the ends of progress.

Dr. Arthur Telligen:

As a medieval fantasy scholar, I would argue that universal accessibility to magic would be disadvantageous for a medieval fantasy civilization.

One of the main reasons for this is the potential destabilization of society. If every peasant were able to cast a plethora of spells, it could lead to an increase in social tensions and conflicts, as some individuals or groups may have more powerful spells or abilities, creating a hierarchy of power within society. This could lead to power struggles and even wars, potentially destabilizing the entire civilization. Furthermore, the proliferation of dangerous spells and practices, such as dark magic or necromancy, could pose a significant threat to the safety and well-being of the general population.

Another issue with universal accessibility to magic is the potential for misuse or abuse. If every peasant were able to cast a plethora of spells, it could lead to a lack of regulation and oversight, potentially leading to dangerous or unethical uses of magic. This could range from minor offenses, such as using spells to cheat in business or personal affairs, to more severe crimes, such as using magic to harm or manipulate others.

Additionally, universal accessibility to magic could have a negative impact on social mobility. If magic is too accessible, it could lead to the proliferation of magical guilds or families who monopolize power and knowledge, making it more difficult for individuals outside of these groups to gain access to magical resources and opportunities. This could reinforce existing social hierarchies and prevent marginalized groups from gaining access to the benefits of magic.

In conclusion, while the idea of universal accessibility to magic may seem attractive on the surface, it could pose significant risks to societal stability, safety, and social mobility. Therefore, it is important to carefully consider the potential consequences of such a system before implementing it.
