Revelry Filk: Baby, There's Kobolds Outside

 By Crystal "Cressida" Welch

Winter Revelry brought a filk competition, and what better way to end the week and kick off a showcase of filks (with their creators' permission and submission to the View) to sprinkle in the upcoming cold weeks than with this one from the one and only Bard Cressida! (Whose player also played Cornix throughout the event).

"I really can’t stay

(Baby, there’s Kobolds outside)

I’ve got to go away

(But, baby, there’s Kobolds outside)

This adventure has been

(Been kicking monster skulls in)

So very nice

(I’ll hold the line, just stab twice)

The kingdom will start to worry

(Got kill them in a hurry)

The villagers pacing their floors

(Listen to the creatures roars)

So, really, I’d unleash fury

(You’d be judge and jury)

But maybe just a half a sword more

(Grab a sword I’ll pick up my board)

The village might think

(Baby, it’s bad out there)

And the corpses do stink

(Best get the remains out of there)

I wish I knew how

(There seems to be a portal now)

To break this spell

(I’ll disenchant, I know it well)

I ought to say “Go, go, go, sir”

(The monsters move ever closer)

At least I’m gonna say that I tried

(What’s the sense of hurtin’ your pride?)

I really can’t stay

(Oh, baby, we’ll hold out)

Together: Baby, there’s Kobolds outside!

I simply must go

(But, baby, there’s Kobolds outside!)

Move and stay low

(But, baby, there’s Kobolds outside!)

Your hospitality has been

(How lucky you dropped in)

So nice and kind

(Look outside they’ve formed a line)

My they look so suspicious

(Gosh they look kinda vicious)

My knight will be at the door

(Waves of them hitting the floor)

My we must be ambitious

(Gosh they are super vicious)

But maybe just a lightning bolt toward

(Never such a group before)

I’ve gotta get home

(But, baby, you’d die out there)

Say, lend me your arms

(It’s totally dire out there)

We must take a stand

(I thrill and take your hand)

But don’t you see?

(How can they do this to me?)

There’s bound to be more tomorrow

(Think of the lifelong sorrow)

At least there will be plenty who tried

(If you got stabbed and died)

I really can’t stay

(Get down, Kobolds out)

Together: Baby, it’s Kobolds

Baby, it’s Kobolds outside!"

What You Missed - Winter Revelry

 Written by: Lynn "Tempest" Butler

Dear Friends,

The air was crisp with coldness, fresh, frosted leaves, and smoking breath. Oh how you missed the cold.

But, the sacrifices you made by staying warm, I could not do.

By staying warm you missed the excitement of a decorated hall, lights, candles, ornaments, as far as your eyes could see.

By staying warm you missed Matiya’s smiling face at the desk as she multitasked with baby Sage and Mathies hot on her tracks, waiting for the next magic friend to reach into Father Yule’s sack.

By staying warm you missed sweet Cornix fluttering about, from station to stage, squeaking and squawking, singing and shouting, - never having a chance to perch and eat her shrimp in peace

By staying warm you missed the feast!

Oh goodness so much food littered the tables; ham, potatoes, breads, appetizers Kyomi’s meals kept bellies bulging and belts loose.

By staying warm you missed the quick feet of old men, Tao ducking and weaving and not dealing, Sagart carrying presents for the mimic to feast.

By staying warm you missed cookies coming to life.

Frosting, sprinkles, props, and details- you could use anything on the table. Popular pieces replicated the named heir of Chimeron and Blackwood’s knight Commander.

By staying warm you missed the love that community brings.

The cheering of shots and shouting of cards, the rambunctious actions at Evie’s bar. The clapping and hollering of Sir Torolf’s knighting, a bruised shoulder marking achievement and years of fighting.

The laughter of many partaking in gift swap glee There is so much that you missed to see.

Though the fire was cozy and you were as warm as could be, Was it worth missing the Winter Revelry?

With Love,

Sir Tempest

High Priestess to the Church of Arius

Magistrate of the Winter Revelry

Knight of Chaos

Hear Ye Hear Ye: The Player's Meeting Announcement

 Hello everyone!

We've received a handful of questions about proposals and the upcoming PM/EHC. Since a few folks have asked, the questions are probably prevalent in others' minds as well. Below is a brief treatise for all who are interested. If you have additional questions, please feel free to reach out. Thank you for being engaged in our community's regulatory process!

Pat B. "Saka" and Keith C. "Saegan", your Realms Administrative Meeting Organizers

 How to See/Approve Proposals

We've put together this doc with some instructions and screenshots of the necessary RealmsNet navigation: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rTak2T_7-_m6SfyR6aVp0XSCa4765vKWpJuCJLj25hQ/edit?usp=sharing

 Dates and Locations

We're working on reserving in-person space that could theoretically facilitate hybrid meetings (as the prior EHC passed a standing policy encouraging hybrid meetings). That space and the practicality of a hybrid approach is still undetermined, but we are aiming for mid-February through early March Saturdays for the two meetings. The locations we are considering are in Nashua, NH and Worcester, MA.

 Proposal Approvals

The EHC passed a standing policy requiring at least 30 members of the community to support any given proposal before it will be discussed at the meeting. This includes day-of proposals - the standing policy specifically states: "This support and the proposal must be submitted to the organizer(s) of the Players’ Meeting before discussion on any tabled or other day-of proposals." As has been the case for well over a decade, proposals receiving the approval of at least 10 EHs able to attend and vote at the upcoming EHC can bypass the PM if that approval is registered at least a week before the PM. Time permitting, proposals that bypass the PM will still get discussion time at the PM.

The Epic History of the Realms: Chapter Two

Written by: Dan Diamond

Chapter Two: The fall of Valehaven and nearly the end of the whole Realms LARP

Corrections from chapter one: The Realms did not in fact start in Steve Johnson’s living room (according to him). John Wrisley did not break his arm when the siege tower fell on him, rather he sprained his ankle and torqued his back. In his words, "It was one of those things where six inches one way or the other would have been a different story. There were parts of the tower that would have killed me pretty good. I was caught by the diagonal metal braces that had some flex. Amy Reed, now Amy Wrisley was the EMT on site. So, it was one of the best things that ever happened to me."

1991 was the year everything changed.  First, the fall of Valehaven. With little preamble, Prince Bob announced the end of Valehaven. The individual nations were united no more. Prince Bob released his will, a document which specifically precluded any continuing of the principality (and neatly closing off the available Princesses alternatives). Sir Eldritch claims to have held on to the original document for all these decades, and was good enough to make it available for this article:

According to Bob Traynor, the general expectation had been that Prince Bob was going to leave the crown to Princess Meg, as their characters were married. Dis-inhering her was a surprise. It should be noted from this in character account that Sir BS apparently believed the will to be fake. He has a first hand account of this era dredged up from a very early website.

The Glendale Era (1987-1991) was over, but other events continued. No longer in character politically unified, some saw anarchy and some saw a larger society forming. Many missed this shattered unity and a longing for a return to Valehaven’s glory cast a shadow for years which boosted the rise of Verai (see upcoming chapter 3). And there were those who adapted to the new society. In that vein, Meg the fighting barmaid, no longer Princess of Valehaven, organized her friends and followers. Bob Traynor remembers that cold Friday September night at Rrathchllwyn. Queen Vrille of Blackavar had sent Morgil and Lady Anne with orders to support Chimeron’s genesis. That night there was an unusually spectacular northern lights display, which Bob proclaimed (in character as Morgil) was a good omen for Chimeron’s birth. In a small fireside swearing in ceremony, Chimeron was founded and Queen Meg emerged with a small group but big plans. I believe this group IC included the mighty Sir Shane, Lady Cassa, clever Pol Coville, and Angus Coville (nicknamed “Clockwork” for his crafted creations, among which was an early crossbow), and Lady Dee (a bard whose campfire singing was a prominent part of era before regular night quests).

It is here that I enter the story.  I came to WPI in 1990, and while I was interested in LARPs, those that I had found had been interactive literature style. I did participate in what I later learned was the legendary first run of Uncle Don’s “The Morning After”, but that’s another story. I’d read Niven’s “Dream Park”, and in the first month of 1991 at the Arisia convention I saw that the LARP group inspired by that book existed, but despite actively seeking one I had not managed to find the LARP for me. The best I could do was the WPI fencing team. Then in the fall of ‘91 my inquiries bore fruit: I heard that there were people doing a LARP fighter practice at nearby Elm Park. So, I sought them out and introduced myself to Chimeron. That was two weeks before they made their presentation to the WPI Science Fiction Society. In this presentation, Kathy Journeay (Queen Meg) spun tales of legends and wonder. Andy Dunphy (Cassa)’s leggy red dress certainly helped; the WPISFS membership were enthusiastically on board, and the large, regular practice at WPI began.

My first event was the first event for many of the WPISFS, in early December the “Plague Event” by Chris Chaney (Pol Coville). Like most new adventurers (then, as now, termed “newbies”) I didn’t have a good grasp of what was going on. There were tourneys, a tiny dungeon crawl, and a plague going around. The high point for me was when I saw utility in a cursed item. There was a noisemaker which if spun would create an eerie sound, which would attract all the monsters to converge and attack. I saw how it worked, and decided it could work for me. No one wanted it, so I got a hold of it and sounded it on the far side of the (tiny) event site from the dungeon. Then as the monsters converged, I dropped the noisemaker and ran around to hastily single handedly loot the temporarily vacant dungeon (a few silver from the bottom of a cauldron of goop). A lot of my best moments in my early adventuring years involved fast running.

After that, my friend Brian Lebel (Jamal) had the idea of founding our own nation, and with our friends  became “Banecroft Barony”. In January of ’92, the WPISFS pitched in and we had an unofficial Realms event in the WPI lower Wedge in which we had some tourneys, a modest feast, with Banecroft founded and the first blue tabards issued, the zeroth “Baronial Birthday”. Our first official event as a nation was Tournaments of Chiron. Like many we planned join Chimeron when the others did in the spring, but in this nebulous in between time I was faced with my first political decision. The Amazons were having some sort of serious disagreement with Kugen of Mirkshaw. Seeing our new group, the Amazons appealed to me for aid in their cause. Kugen (OOC, Terry Armstrong) looked and acted like THE Kugen from the “Highlander” movie. I was sympathetic to the Amazon’s plea, but did not offer our swords, and diplomacy prevailed anyway. But that was soon forgotten as something Realms-shattering happened. It was at this event that the shocking news dropped: Shannon announced the end of the Realms! No more game, no more events.

For me, it seemed like this new world full of promise, which took me a year or a lifetime to find, was being capriciously snatched away. Wonder became doubt. Years of legends seemed about to become myth. I asked Queen Meg if this was really the end, and her grim, businesslike reply was, “We won’t let that happen.” Indeed, the movers and shakers of the Realms had a series of meetings to determine how the Realms could or would continue. I know it was a series of meetings because three separate people I interviewed claimed to have hosted the “first Event Holder’s meeting.” I don’t doubt their honesty, and concluded that the process was more gradual than a single meeting and which one of these meetings was official was a judgement call, as the process was refined. The first “meeting of event holders” wasn’t the same as the “First (official) Event Holder’s Council”, as they were in the process of defining the latter. The basic gist they hashed out was the final core principal which makes the Realms what it is: shared ownership of the game. In a sense, the current Realms system began in those meetings of early ’92. What was before was the LARP Shannon created, what was after was the Realms community. It is this community ownership which makes the Realms unique among LARPs. Almost any LARP you can think of has a single event holding team. The Realms has as many event throwing teams as there are people who care about the Realms, and it changes over the decades with only minor rumbling. The Realms of 2024 is really different from the Realms of 1992, but it has continuity and is indisputably the same LARP. In my opinion, the greatest strength of this system is how different the events it can produce. One weekend can be a huge and desperate war, the next a high-profile tournament, the next and intricate role playing story, then the next week an intricate puzzle solving quest, and then a boisterous party. It’s what has kept me playing all these decades rather than getting bored. You never can tell what you will get, and there are little boundaries on an EH or player’s creativity.

Jarrod Marshal and John Wrisley’s accounts agree that one fundamental principal that was forged was that a player has control of their character and an event holder has control of what happens at the event they throw. That meant that an event holder couldn’t make it a fact that Vader was Luke’s father without Luke’s player’s consent. You got to set your own character’s backstory, and no one could rewrite it unless you agreed. Similarly, if a different event holder wanted to have a big activity from their plot happen at a first even holder’s event, they would need the permission of the event holder holding that actual event.

They worked out the definition of an Event Holder (subsequently abbreviated EH), and thus the definition of an official event. They wanted EHs to be the deciding the rules because, as John described it, “if you wanted to change the game, you had to put some work in”. They defined how this group of EHs would vote on the rules, and when. Thus, the Event Holder’s Council (EHC) was formed, which continues to keep the rules of the game a living document to this day. Last but not least, they hashed out the actual rules. Jarrod Marshal (lord Jarrod) wants it noted that Folkestone was key to Pikes being in the game in those first meetings. No doubt everyone had their own pikes to grind, and the rules needed (and got) decades of refinement since. They worked it out, every word in the Omnibus a result of democratic sausage making.

So, why did Shannon drop first Valehaven, then the Realms? Bob Traynor names simple burnout. As any leader of a large Realms nation will tell you, it’s not easy. Being the political leader of the entire Realms must have taken a lot of effort that had to have been difficult to sustain. Add to that running at least two large events a year, it’d be a lot. James Murphy points to creative differences. Shannon understandably had very strong feelings about what would be good for the Realms. As more people became creatively involved in the Realms, the more it changed from his vision. For example, James Murphy remembers that Lance’s (that’s a nickname, Highrider IC and Tim Gilkes OOC) “Path” magic system replaced the “Component” magic Shannon preferred. Steve Matulewitz confirms that Lance and Shannon differed on the rules. Jarrod Marshal points to a romantic breakup as a factor. Another source believed the actual, real and tragic death of the prominent Realms player Nana Prom had hit Shannon particularly hard, but this clashes with Jarrod’s recollection that Nana Prom was part of the EHC shortly before he was lost to us. This could be confused because there were certainly meetings of event holders in the Glendale Era. Randy Gordon at first told me that he “thought everybody knew” why Shannon abdicated IC and OOC, but then when I pointed out everyone else had a different answer than each other, he immediately said, “I’d best keep it under my hat then”, which is the most Sir Randal answer ever. But Randy was right that it doesn’t matter: Shannon Slate took the Realms as far as one man could, unifying several precursor games and establishing several of the fundamental principals that makes the Realms what it is. When he could bear it no farther, a lot of collective bargaining forged something unique to LARPing, and the final collective ownership of the rules both established the last Realms fundamental principals, and also made the Realms immortal: dependent on no one person or even team to keep it going. Distributing the work, when one EH moves on, another steps up. More events are possible, and they are more varied than ever. Of course that means there are lows as well as highs: so, curate your Realms experience for the sort of events which you personally like, but don’t be afraid to try new things because there is some surprisingly good stuff out there.

I could end my history of the Realms there. Everything that follows is in a form a player of 2024 would recognize. But there are some great stories to come, and the loss of Valehaven left a hole many were attempting to fill in different ways. In Chapter three, 1992, the new society was figuring itself out, IC and OOC. What nations would survive, which would set policy? Diplomacy was more complex than ever, and in that storm Banecroft struggled between different winds, and Verai began its meteoric rise. Camelot, I mean Valehaven, had fallen and a golden age was replaced with one that was both gritty but vibrant.

Why I Want To Go - Winter Revelry

By: Adrian Cronin "Barbarian"

I haven’t been this excited for an event in quite some time. Watching this community evolve while staying true to tradition brings me great joy.

On Friday, we Voranians will gather in ritual to protect the realms from winters bite. We will take on the suffering of the cold, letting the warmth of community and courage, keep us warm as we call to our gods for favor. We welcome any and all to participate and bear witness, but know it will likely not be comfortable. Once our ritual is complete, then we can begin our revelry in the warmth of the tavern. Songs will be sung. Swords will be swung. And the gods will protect us for another year.

Saturday will be filled with much activity. In addition to merriment and competition:

“I’ve been blessed with a unique opportunity. A tomb of my ancestors, long sealed, has opened. Draugr have been reported wandering in and out of its entrance. They need to be put back to rest, as well as the manner of their resurrection both discovered and dealt with. For this, I will need warriors of keen mind and honorable heart.

This Tomb is located in my ancestral home of Corbach. It is here the gods are dead, magic is stagnant and hope is a distant memory. The northern wastes, where we are going, were once home to many barbarian tribes. Their culture was eradicated and my homeland cursed. These Draugr were once proud warriors, who earned their rest, and now even that has been taken from them.

Aid me. Take what riches you can, if that is what motivates you. Only show honor in your actions, earn by right of conquest not by deception or desecration.

Once we are done, and our sword arms are heavy, hearts and purses full, we shall return to revel once more.”

I am excited to collaborate with the Adventures guild to provide a spot of content for you all that should foreshadow a new plot for you all to enjoy, brought to you by the “Broken Spears Free Company”. Announcements to be made in the new year.

In addition to seeing people, throwing content and howling at the moon… I am most excited for the food. Steven and Meghan Matulawicz are experts in hospitality and I plan to feast early and often. They’ve broght together a great staff of people from different nations who all embody the spirit and cheer of the season.

Saturday night, Father Yule will make an appearance, and all of the beautiful tradition that came with UCCT seems to carry into “Winter Revelry”. Tradition is truly what stands our community apart from other larps. I can’t wait to enjoy the holidays alongside all of you as we have for so many years, with faces both fresh and familiar.

The merriment will extend into sunday as well, with both food and content. The healers guild, is providing, and doing so out to pocket. Lucky for me, and those who can afford to contribute, they are accepting donations. We are a community game after all.

This is in no way an exhausted list of what’s in store. Only what is on my mind at the moment.

So saddle your steeds, pack your wagons and prepare to get merry. Can’t wait to see you all there.

Druid of the Mountain

Realmsie Radar (Charts) 2

We have a new fun feature here at the View! Part guessing game, part chance to explore the not-as-obvious traits of your characters and your character's friends. Mostly a good opportunity for some light-hearted fun!

Below are three radar charts with character stats, as is common in many RPGs and similar gaming experiences. Your job is to figure out what chart belongs to what Realms character.

There is no right or intended answer to any of these radar charts. They are made with a hearty dose of randomness and ridiculousness. Nonetheless, we at the View have faith you will zero in on exactly which Realmsies hit these stat profiles!

Post your ideas and comments on social media!

Rumors for December 1024

[Arken]

As the expedition to Midrealm continues to gather supplies and volunteers, an unexpected difficulty has arisen: Scrying magic into Midrealm has been unexpectedly difficult and unclear

[A random village]

Residents of a small wooded village report disturbing changes.  A nearby empty field was replaced overnight with a large meadow, covered in tall and unusual plant life.  Locals who went to explore the new meadow never returned.  Meanwhile, farmers have been missing cattle, the only clue to the livestock’s disappearance being large, beastly footprints left behind.

[Blackavar]

Reports of activity in an old ruined settlement to the east of the mountains of Blackavar has raised concerns among the nobility.

[Across the Realms]

All across the Realms crows have been spotted carrying all manner of gifts in their talons. They seem to be converging in a snowy glade where a fancy crow is inspecting the presents.

[Chimeron City]

There have been scattered reports of healing magic working a little too well within the city - the occasional Heal Limb causing muscle growth, or a Raise Dead seeming to make its target not only alive but several years physically younger. While these incidents have not been frequent or severe enough to cause alarm, some citizens have been speculating about the cause of these side effects.

[Saurabian Empire]

Talk of increased wages have tempered the discussions of secession. Skeptics some believe in the increased wages, but there are second- and third-hand reports of some people receiving their new wages.

A Letter from Cornix, Messenger of A God

 Hello Brave Adventurers,

I am Cornix, messenger of Athena. I have been watching over you all for a long time.  Though few have met me, I feel I know so many of you, and now there is an opportunity that you may know me. I have been bestowed a gift by my lady that once a year I can return to a mortal body from my crow form. In the spirit of this season of gifts I have set out to work with Pater Yule to bring Yuletide cheer during our darkest days. There are many hardworking volunteers for this festival, readying a great feast and other fun activities for your arrival in a few short weeks.

You have spent the year taking part in questing, fighting grand battles, making new friends, and competing in incredible tournaments: I have seen it all from nearby tree tops. That’s why I think it is high time we have a moment to come together this winter season and celebrate with shiny things and warming drinks near this beautiful object you call a Shinegourd. How wonderful your traditions are! It is my hope you find much Revelry this Winter, as you gather at Yule time in a familiar hall for new and old traditions alike. One new tradition I am quite excited to introduce is that of a beautiful new title for the one with the most festive spirit, more on this in my next missive! As I watch over your partying I will award points for many things. I have it on good authority that Friday evening there will be a potluck, where bringing dishes to share will bring points to you. Alongside decorating the tree, participating in winter rituals, and perhaps some other happenings that you shall see soon enough. Of course I love helpers, so those who step up to assist in kitchen or casino shifts will see their fair share of points as well! Come Saturday there will be some adventures to be had, as well as food, drink, caroling and much merriment! There will be many gifts to be had as well, I hear tell of a gift swap and a visit from Pater Yule for the young adventurers out there. But don’t fret if you are older in years, for I have been collecting shiny objects all year and keeping them very safe. You will have the chance to pick one for yourself and don’t worry if you wish to trade with each other, that is all part of the fun and I shall take great joy in seeing you seek out a shiny that suits you best.

Throughout the day there will be a dessert tournament, gingerbread decorating competition, holiday filk contest, performances, and plenty of time to clink glasses with your family and friends. And if all of that wasn’t enough, I hear tell of a Guild of Healers who will be throwing a quest on Sunday! How exciting it all is!

I cannot wait to see you all very soon!

Humbly yours,

Cornix

Why I Want to Go - Nedengiving: Opening the Halls back up

Written by: Dani "Elizah" Lacasse

Every year around this time we often find ourselves asking “What am I thankful for?” From good health, to family & friendship, another big thing that always crosses my mind is how grateful I am for being part of such a supportive community that cares so deeply about service and giving back to others. Nedengiving is one of many of those events that embodies just that, and I for one am thrilled to see it back in full swing.

For starters, this event hosts Nedens annual canned food drive that will be supporting the Veterans North East Outreach Center. Bringing at least 5 cans will not only provide a discount on the event entry fee but traditionally has gotten you some tickets to enter in their auction. And if the prizes from Neden BBQ this year are any indication of what's in store for the auction table, you definitely don't want to miss out. The last canned food drive they hosted, the community brought in over 600 cans to donate. [and I challenge us to beat that number this year!]

For folks who haven't had the pleasure of attending this event in the past and may need a little more convincing, there's typically a little bit of activity for everyone to enjoy. Mingling and gambling amongst them, though some of my past favorites that I hope are making a return are the various carnival games including Lord Syruss’s favorite of course, cornhole and Nymbous's SmithNEDian Museum that displays some of Nedens magical artifacts. JB also announced that a new activity to the Neden Hall, that we saw last at their BBQ will be making a reappearance and trust me, even if you don't participate, Judge Dresden is just as entertaining to observe.

Oh, and obviously there's the food! The food at this feast has never disappointed (except that one time with Madame Zarine and cranberry sauce, but you'll need to ask her about that some other time) with their generous conventional spread of “givings” foods, though this year I hear whispers of sea crustaceans as part of the menu? Whatever is served, I'm sure it'll be delicious!

Back in April our dearest Neden friends hosted their first event back in five years and it truly felt like they never missed a beat. The energy and atmosphere were as welcoming and as lively as ever and I expect that Nedengiving will be no different. So grab your cans and pull up a chair.

See you in the hall,

Sir Elizah

Realmsie Radar (Charts)

Word From the West - Black & White

Written by: Dan "N" Hudson

*The following was discovered in a dingy diary lost along a road, and translated from the original goblin to be readable in the common tongue. Spelling and grammar also underwent heavy corrections.*

Dear Diary,

My name is Gobbergobber now! It was Paul for a bit, but I traded that lame, short name for a super cool long name. Sadly that is the only thing I got to keep from our robbing of the mail carrier the other day - adventurers killed my pals and our trolls and took back all the mail we stole. No fair! Stealing things and disrupting the postal service is what I live for, yet apparently it is illegal in Chimeron just like other fun things like necromancy and murder!

I have made it my quest to change Chimeron’s unfair anti-fun laws, starting with the outlawing of theft! I talked to the guy who’s been king for years and get this - he didn’t even make the law! It’s been around since a monarch named Queen Meg, with no one questioning this outdated law that has no place in today’s society! The king made it clear that I would have to talk to this queen about changing the law, so that’s what I set out to do.

But it’s proving harder than I thought! He said that she was under the hill but I’ve been checking under every hill I can find and still no sign of her! Was I lied to? Did this “Queen Meg” ever really exist? I don’t know, but I’ll either find the truth or get tired trying and give up.

Make stealing legal!!!

-Gobbergobber

P.S. I’m hungry so I’m gonna go eat a pig now. A stolen one, because I like stealing things.

Us

Hello people of the Realms,

I wanted to wait a couple days before I sent out this message, I wanted you to understand that while this missive is certainly a reaction, its purpose is not to be reactionary.

It’s no secret that many members of our beloved community feel less safe today than they did last week.  Some are worried about health care, about civil liberties, about their place in society, even about their continued right to be who they are. If there was something that could be said to make any of those fears evaporate I would say it in an instant.

Sadly I don’t have those words for you, but I’ll offer to you what words I do have.

Those of you who are old like me remember a well loved reporter and news anchor for CBS named Dan Rather. A voice who reported some of the most pivotal events of the previous generations including Kennedy’s assassination and Nixon’s Watergate scandal. Though he’s retired, he’s still active as a writer and on social media. Wednesday he posted this:

“I wanted to share my daughter Robin's post from this morning:

We can do hard things ( again.)  Get up. Shake it off. Don’t panic or isolate.  Take care of the young ones who got their hopes up. Encourage their dreams.  Lean into your trusted political and social networks and plan how to connect with other adjacent groups quickly and make plans. Organize more deeply than you think we can. Resistance starts now. We know how to do it. We’ve done it before. Visualize our getting through this in the most beautiful and intact way. Please please please just do not give up. We can love and protect each other through this. We have to.”

As I took time to ponder Robin Rather’s words, I stumbled upon the realization that she was talking about Realms. Not directly, obviously, but so much of what Realms is can be found in what she’s asking of us.

There’s no doubt that Realms is, for many of us, our most important and enduring social network. When you look across the community, it’s easy to count the reasons that we are each different from one another but at the end of the day aren’t most of those differences superficial? The things that unite us, the things that we have in common with one another, are much more obvious and powerful if we take a step back and look for them.

In this community, in the Realms, you have a place full of like-minded individuals who care about one another like family, who have mentored each other and helped one another navigate their place in the world, who have learned and grown beside one another as we’ve become better versions of ourselves.

I’ll paraphrase something Queen Meg herself once imparted to me. In this community we have a place where we have quested together to save the world, even if it wasn’t the real world we were saving. We have a place where we have stood beside each other to fight off evil, even if that evil was only make-believe. We have a place where we have bled together in combat even if no real blood was ever spilled to the ground.

These experiences were real, even if they were about pretend things. The feeling of wanting to save the world, the resolution to stand against monsters, the willingness to shed blood on behalf of the ones you love. Those things are yours. You earned them. You are strong. Stronger, perhaps, than you even know.

Finally I want to say something about resistance.

Resistance means probably a hundred different things and will take a hundred different forms and I can’t pretend I fully understand even a fraction of all of them.

But I do know this. One type of resistance, a very powerful one, is joy.

I know that seems counterintuitive to some, and it might seem flippant to talk about joy when so many people are afraid, but I’ll try to convince you that it’s not. Joy is self-care. Joy is a panacea to burn-out.  Joy is recharging our batteries to allow us to brace for harder things. Joy is fellowship and the ability to make use of the fact that humans need connections to one another to thrive. Joy is a type of support that can shelter us if we let it and can inspire us if we leverage it to do so.

Experiencing victory together. Giving those who are scared a place to put fear aside for a moment. Comforting others with a sense of family and community. Celebrating each other’s achievements. Doing little things to make one another happy. All of these things and countless others just like them. Those are the immutable joys that belong to us here in the Realms.

I say these things because I want to implore this:

Continue all the amazing things that you do to keep Realms a place full of joy and do not foist guilt upon yourself for seeking that joy in a time when the world feels far from perfect.

I believe in you and I believe in us.

Jason Rosa, on behalf of the Knights of the Realms

Rumors for November 1024

[Blackavar]

With the passing of the Harvest and their annual Sowing of the Ground celebrated with so-called "Blood Games", the Orcs of the Mountain Clans have entered their hibernation for the winter.

[Chimeron]

Chimeron City: There have been reports of newcomers to the city asking about good places to worship Gaia in the area, though local Gaians say that they have not encountered any new Gaia worshippers fitting the descriptions of these strangers.

~~~
Clayburgh, Chimeron: In the small port town of Clayburgh, soldierly types calling themselves Ranterrans have come from across Lake Behert to establish trade, bringing crops from their harvest and looking for work as guards and mercenaries. Residents have expressed minor annoyance at how quick the visitors are to praise their god Ran, some sort of foreign golden dragon god of light and creation, but they appreciate the business nonetheless.
[Necron]
Scouts around Necron have reported increased activity in and around Necron.  Walls are being shored up, gates reinforced.  The gates have also started to emit a strange greenish glow as well.
[The “Saurabian Empire”]
Dissent grows among the populace, and secluded rooms are filled with talks of secession. In more brazen parts of the empire, people openly talk as if they were never a part of Saurabia!
What You Missed - Black and White 1024, Chimeron [Court Edition]
Sometimes important things go down during court. It would be nice if the abridged meeting minutes were shared so that those of us in the Realms who are not able to attend Court are still able to keep abreast of the minutiae of the politicking that occurs. With Sir Cecil's abdication and Sir Orion's rise to princehood, this last court is especially interesting.
Court began with a procession of the Royal House and important governmental figures of Chimeron. As the figures found their spot, with Sir Cecil and Sir Orion standing in front of their prospective seats, a hawk appropriately sounded off, marking the significance of this moment.
Once all had taken their seats, Sir Cecil stood, and declared that Chimeron was to go to the rule of Saurabia. Comically, Cecil clapped a hand immediately over his mouth as the court looked on in shock. Thankfully this was met with levity rather than accusations of betrayal, and after a brief misunderstanding with the King's Guard, Alpacasaurus was given high fives per the orders of the then king. Sir Orion has since reversed this ruling, with Saurabia not to be in charge of Chimeron.
Unfortunately it's not all levity, as then Advisor Cressida read off a letter from "the Author", who is believed to be the resuscitated shadow of the being formerly known as Rexan, though in the letter they claim to not be the same entities. The Author declared Daniel, a missing child from Blackavar, is theirs now, and with him the gift of creation. Cressida did an admirable job reading it neutrally, when one could have easily taken the tones to be mocking. The Author extends an invitation to all to
"Knock Knock Knock, and then again
Upon the Harrowed Gate
Three more knocks and then descend
Willingly to your Harrowed Fate."
And wrote that while they won't be attending Sir Orion's coronation, a gift will be sent instead.
Desserts as organized by Fern: Thimble, J'ortsa, High Lord Temorse, Sir Jean Baptiste, Ser Iawen, and Omri created culinary fudgy treats for the judges and people who attended Black and White. Omri's "streussal crumb bottom, coffee dark chocolate fudge, apple caramel fudge" won.
The Order of the Peacock were called, and Aiden spoke for the Order to welcome Lady Liselle into their ranks. They announced that this upcoming season there won't be a color, but an accessory to denote fashion according to the judgings of the Order, and that this year's accessory is: Pouches. It was also announced that there was not one chosen winner of "Black and White" fashion, but each member called out several whose outfits they admired.
Zarine: Kiira of Invictus, Lupa of Invictus
Kyomi: Sarah of Blackwood, Griffin of Chimeron
Tarnisha: Aelias of Invictus
Aiden: Hedda of Blackwood
Back to business, Fancy of Arken called for aid from the Realms for dealing with a band of "wild folk" who had appeared in Mid-Realms. They appear to be holed up in some sort of fortress, and may be worshipping some sort of mirrored rock. Fancy anticipates being ready for this quest some time in the early months of the new year by the common Realms calendar. January or February.
The Gambler's Guild were called, including members: Sir Avendar, Sir Zatara, Sir Tao, Sir Daekara, Sir Matthias, and Sir Eldritch. Sir Tao spoke for the Order, speaking of inducting a new member as well. He called up Sir Wil, with a ceremony that amounted to "Do you wanna?" with Sir Wil stating, "Of course."
Sir Pawldo was called up for Knights of Garm, and he in turn called up Sir Pilpus and Sir Tara. Pawldo spoke briefly about Garm's ultimatum a few years ago where a god had to be put on the chopping block, and Rexan was chosen. Pawldo talked about interlopers that threaten the godly order. Now, Asmodeus, Avatar of Garm, has made Sir Tara a squire to Knights of Garm and issued a new ultimatum for there to be five new squires to the Knights of Garm.
Ser Kovaks stood for the Knights of the Eternal Flame in order to bestow a Fireball, an indicator of honor from the KOEF, upon a worthy member of the community. They spoke to how adventurers can continue their work and attend events such as these freely because of the work Isla of Rhiassa does to ensure Cub Care is available for those with cubs of their own. Thank you Isla!
King CuCullain interrupted court to say that the Fae acknowledge all the work Cecil has done, and his accomplishments. He stated that the gates of Danaan are always open to Sir Cecil. When the two embraced, whispered words were exchanged that could not be heard by the court. When they broke apart and King CuCullain took his leave, he left with the parting announcement that Sir Cecil is expected at Fae Court.
Sir Orion called on five individuals for their efforts in Gi: Sir Jean Baptiste, Fern, Caleal, Sir Eimon, Apprentice YPNN. They had varied impact on the war efforts, leading to success, and were named "Great Heroes of the Resistance."
Sir Pawldo is once more called up, this time to be acknowledged by Sir Cecil for all his efforts. While Sir Cecil won't make Pawldo an Avatar of Chimeron during his reign, he stated that it will occur in Sir Orion's reign, to which Sir Orion agreed.
Princess Brynn and Princess Cimon stood. They talked about increasing their numbers and acknowledging the efforts and accomplishments of Cressida. After throwing in a joke about how Cressida keeps him in check, Sir Cecil called Cressida from where she stood as Advisor, and transitioned her from the role of Advisor to Princess. Although she still had to finish up heralding court.
Princess Cressida stated the last word went to the crown: Sir Cecil stated that he likes symmetry, things coming around. He named Princess Brynn as Princess in his first official act as king, the very first thing he did when he was coronated was call her up. And now he would like his last official act to be to call Sir Wil up, to acknowledge him as a Prince of Chimeron.
Cecil then placed his crown on the thrown, and left.
Prince Sam called Avatars of Chimeron on him, and led the procession of Court out. Thus, court of Black and White 1024 was concluded.
What You Missed - Black & White 1024
Written by: Anna "Hedda" Hewitt
The Retelling of the Masquerade celebration of Dià de los Muertos know as Black and White.
As we arrived people were spewn about preparing for the day. They newer adventurers went on a quest to save the mail carrier who was far to late in delivering a scavenger hunt.
All the whole blue was causing a ruckus and attacking people all about. Many a person becoming enchanted by this spirit after grabbing its weapon. They began to slay their friends and enemies alike.
This continued on for a while as there was a very entertaining bingo card which had spaces that could be filled out by interacting with blue in many ways.
People all about worked on completing their bingo cards in record time all while enjoying the array of the day board. There was an array of savory snacks such as crab bite, charcuterie, bread with flavored butters & dips to name a few.
Drink were also a hot with mulled ciders, flavored water, and poison drink.
Yes many a people died to be able to have a taste, all of which seemed to think it well worth it. Our adventurers with resistance to poison and resisting death became very pertinent in removing the poison so people could enjoy.
All the while fights for champions and tournaments in full swing down in the fighting ring.
Not long after Blackwood Joe came about and told us of his need for assistance. We traveled out to find golems protecting a station in which there was quick the intricate experiment. Having to balance circuits with proper scale patterns to the layline and gather crystals from the golems to power it all. Many new and seasoned adventurers collaborated on this challenge.
404 and the newer adventurers focused on solving the puzzle with their smarts.
Sir Elizah, Sage and I went for the route of trial and error.
In the end we managed to get power through to the circuits. As I wandered back to wet my pallet with more snacks. The team was able to distill opal at the experimental table!
All while I enjoyed a snack or mushroom and broccoli risotto.
After which I was able to convince Pawldo to eat chocolate as a werewolf and complete regicide to complete my bingo card!!
People in the tavern were playing poker, blackjack, and spending there gambled coin at the array of wonderful shops.
As time continued on people switched into their finery and Chimeron enlisted the help of Ser Vesper of Blackwood and Runaris of Invictus  to guard their doors so they could complete their blood ritual in peace. Once completed we all moved our way towards court.
Approaching court one could see an array of the mask covering everyone's faces as they settled in.
Many a wonderful things happened at court.
Cecil begun by announcing Chimeron under Sarbia. Then regretting not having magic blocked on himself today if all days.
Sir Wil was made apart of the gabler's guild and a prince of Chimeron, Cressida was made a princess of Chimeron, Pawldo was brought forth as one of the longest serving members of Chimeron and told Prince Regent Orion would dub him avatar of Chimeron at his own coronation.
A fireball was given to Squire Isla by Sir Kovaks in person as they were recognized behind the scenes but deserved their limelight.
The order of the peacock welcomed Liselle into their ranks and named pouches as the next year's fashion statement. They recognized the outstanding ability to look better than the rest to Squire Griffin, Lupa, Sir Kiira, and Myself.
Sir Orion recognized the efforts of Sir Eamon, Fern, Ypnn, and Sir Caleal for their efforts in Gi. How they helped to turn the tide of the battle.
King Cuchulain invited King Cecil to his court in fae.
I'm sure I've missed a few details but it was a court to remember for sure.
We had a nice auction, which I took short leave of to present a (much to handsy with other folks husbands) dead body before my King.
Finally we all went to desert and dance. People enjoyed the evening all while the wild hunt went on in the woods just near.
At this point dance had gone on for a while all while death wandered about.
I decided it was time to take my leave and rest after a day or running about.
It was quite the day of meeting new adventurers and having an array of different things to pass the time. A culmination of King Alexander Cecil hanging up his crown in preparation for Sir Orion to take his seat on the pedestal.
With all due respect and a bit of jest,
Squire Whan-Hedda con Atlantis of Blackwood.
