The Winning Entry from Team Arryn
Amyse & Rel

Team Phoenix's Entry- Raynor & Rillan

Team Salt Queen- I entered cleaved again this year, not knowing what to expect. I entered not only because I had a ton of fun last year, but I wanted to give my team a well deserved rest during dinner break. The basket held a slew of ingredients, that at first I didn’t know what to do with, so I wanted to stick to the same plan as last year - a simple meal, and a dessert. Here’s what we came up with.

Sliced pork chop on a bed of fried bacon and onion - seasoned with salt and chili powder.
Jambalaya rice - no extra seasonings necessary
Poached Pear Crepe - made by reducing orange juice and pear juice to sugar reduction, adding some sugared pineapple and the lucky charms breakfast bar to melt in flavor, reducing further with some milk for creaminess. I then added the sliced pears to cook in the flavors, and become sticky. I added these to a lightly fried tortilla to make a “crepe” dessert. ~ Hannah "Nhadala" Blood

Team Arryn- This was my first time entering Cleaved and actually first time attending QoH as a PC, so I had no idea what to expect.  Given my reputation in prior Realms kitchens, I packed up half of my non-electric kitchen and ventured forth with my OOC husband (Aaron) for our team. Our overall game plan was to create a cohesive dish, avoid braising because that takes too long, and transform the ingredients like tortillas because everyone makes tacos or burritos with them. As soon as the basket was revealed my mental cogs stated turning and I instantly knew what the main dish was going to be.

We offered up citrus, spice, and tropical fruit braised pork taco sliders.  The meat mixture started with caramelizing bacon and onions in coconut oil, then the pork chop was seared on both sides,  and we added the dried mango and papaya, orange juice, chili powder, paprika, onion powder, cinnamon, oregano, rosemary, salt, pepper, lime zest and lime juice and let that braise (yes I know) until the last minute. The squash noodle addition came out of wanting to use our spiralizer and add color contrast; the noodles were gently sauteed in oil and salt.  My sous chef cut the flour tortillas to mini circles for better presentation and I whipped up a quick aioli made of mayo, milk, chili powder, onion powder, lime juice and salt. The tacos were finished with a light sprinkling of the provided cheese.

For the side we served vegetable fried rice.  We were given jambalaya rice with the seasoning included, but that didn't play well with my tacos. So my sous chef dutifully picked and sifted out the spices and got the plain washed rice going. The rice was fried in coconut oil with a combination of onion, vegetables hand picked out of the can of mixed vegetables, and the veggie burger patty, all diced small. The rice was seasoned with salt, pepper, onion powder, chili powder and liquid from the can of pork and beans.

In all there were only 3 ingredients from the basket we did not use in some form. ~ Melissa "Amyse" Metzger

Team Phoenix- This was my second year competing in Cleaved.  I had a great time last year and wanted to give it a second attempt this year.  Joe 'Rillan' was my partner and we strategized together once we saw the basket, and then did our best to execute on our ideas.

Caribbean Crusted Pork - we used the lime and pineapple to flavor the pork, and gave it a Ritz cracker crust.  We topped this off with some seasoned diced onion.
Cheesy Jambalaya Rice - we added about a third of the cheese block in cubes and mixed that in with the rice, along with some of our remaining onions to add to the already heavily seasoned rice mix.
Squash Zoodles - once we saw the yellow squash, this came straight to mind.  We 'zoodled' the squash to get the shape and then cooked it down in coconut oil and some of the leftover pork fat to add flavor.
Papaya Pear Roll-up - We wanted to include a dessert element on our plate, so for this we took the dried papya bits and reconsituted them in the pear juice.  Once we had the papaya bits juicy again, we cooked that down along with the pear bits, then added in bacon and rolled them up.  We gave the roll-ups a nice toasting in some coconut oil and sent our plate out for judging. ~ Nick "Raynor" Quadrini

What You Missed- Queen of Hearts- The Queen's Edition (Part 3)

By Angela "Phoenix" Earle Gray

My Queen of Hearts weekend started on Friday, when Pat Bobell and I headed to Belchertown where we joined Rhiassa and Nataliya Kostenko for set up. All those bridge, castle, and stage pieces are stored on-site in a shed that the Rosas bought and negotiated having on-site year round. Each year the pieces are pulled out, loaded on a trailer, unloaded, then put together. Multiple items are heavy so it is an extra full day of physical labor for many of those involved.

In addition to our supplies the shed contained an infestation of ants, a couple dead mice, and a live mama mouse that had a nursing baby clinging to her that a brave person on the set up team gently herded into the woods.

As we worked we were taught or reminded about pieces of history, such as the origin of the castle. Rhiassa asked for contributions to make it. The groups who have heraldry on the towers (Chimeron, The Empire, Folkestone, McKryes Rhiassa, and the Realms) each contributed $100 towards construction.  Steve Johnson (Sir Duncan of Rhiassa), Jason Rosa (Sir Aeston of Rhiassa), Aaron Metzger (Sir Rel of Rua Thar Cinn), Josh Truskowski (Nagilum of Rhiassa), and Owen (Mohan) built the prototype Rhiassa tower. Each member of the group made one of the red handprints that you can still see on it, some 15 years ago.

By the time the castle, bridge, and stage were done I was getting pretty tired. Luckily Tom Gallagher arrived in time to be an extra set of hands and help with the last of the heavy lifting, moving the tables. In addition to the building, others set up supplies, pennants, fields, and the kitchen. Nataliya, Siona Gouthro, and I set up the Targetball field. I’m sure you noticed how nice and straight the lines were (NOT).

Saturday, we arrived on site excited for the day and ready to go.  Team presentation was great with a good mix of newer and familiar faces serving as true supporters and competitors backing the worthy potential queen of their choice. I did note during presentations that both the other people running already were queens, Nhadala the Salt Queen and Arryn the Storm Queen, thus the pressure was on my team to win for me so I didn’t remain the only crownless contender.

They rose to the occasion.  With the new format, it’s hard to get a commanding lead though and throughout Saturday and into Sunday we were unsure of what the final outcome would be. I was sure that no matter who won, I was thrilled to be competing and impressed by the attitudes and skill of all involved. It was really clean fighting and I can’t think of a single negative interpersonal interaction I witnessed on the field.

Along with being proud of my team, I was proud of myself as I learned I have long dormant dodgeball skills.  I’m not just saying this to brag personally, though as a non-athletic person who waited 48 years to get her glory moment in a childhood game, I am bragging.  I’m more saying it because I am the last person who would have thought I’d get 6 people out in one game of dodge ball, so don’t let your self-limiting beliefs define you - play hard!

My pupper dog was on site, and I had to take care of her during live chess so Malaki could assist with strategy there. That meant I didn’t get to see the matches which is something I was a bit sad about as I heard they were great games.

When we weren’t attacking or defending the castle, we did a group teamwork challenge. Many people were blindfolded a few weren’t and we worked together to make a structure of VHU’s (virtual hay bale units otherwise known as boxes).  I felt like Avendar, Rubis, Rorin and I worked well together directing construction, and our blindfolded members all filled their roles well too.  I and was proud of the team, but it was unique in that we did it alone for time, so we had to wait quite a while to learn how we did.

As I was able to I checked in with my Aces, both curious on this new tournament and interested in how they were doing. I heard it described as a mix of what was formerly Champion and Mages though the pieces I’m aware of all fit more with Champions than Mages. The aces weren’t required to participate in everything, but there was with a tally system which required participation to be spread throughout the aces in a team.  Part way through the event they stopped using the tally system though. I’m unsure if it will get used in future years.  While each team had four aces, they each were assigned a suit and only competed directly with the aces of their suit.  This led to different winners than there would have been if the four aces with the highest scores had won, and adds complexity and the need for strategic decision making.

Weather varied from overcast to heavy rain throughout Saturday ultimately culminating with some field battles being postponed till Sunday and us taking a longer than usual dinner break post watching some great individual and squad battles.

After some research for Janna and some hunks of meat for dinner I headed up for Rhiassa court, open court, and non-coms. At Rhiassian court Freija was made a full member and Bree became a squire to Knights of Rhiassa.  During open court, I spoke on behalf of the Magi of the Realms sharing history on the order and expressing our renewed commitment to support the role of casting in the Realms. We then brought Ged into the order. Following this we surprised Rorin (and me) by inducting him as well. I had to leave the meeting early and knew we’d agreed to do so but I didn’t think we were doing so that evening.  In my shock I didn’t share close to as much on why and how Rorin is awesome as I wish I had. If you don’t know, ask me. I’ll be happy to tell you wonderful things about him one on one.

Then we move on to the thing dozens of people had put hours and hours of time into preparing for (Hygar’s armor alone was over 200 hours of work) - the non-coms.  I am a long term fan of non-coms at Queen of Hearts. It seems to inspire the best of us.  I feel like I can’t call out any one entry without being neglecting to mention something else equally amazing.  The skills and talent in our community are truly awe inspiring.

My understanding is that a fun night quest was well attended post the non-coms but this future queen was already sleeping. I do know that Janna Pushee had been planning for an outdoor quest was forced to run things inside with super short notice. Props to her and those that assisted her for pulling that off.

I arrived back on site Sunday AM in time to cheer on the runners as they made it in and watch the Athletes drag around a big iron weight. From there we jumped into 10-person squad battles, bridge battles, luck of the draw and the challenge race.

The challenge race deserves a bit more explanation, and was very fun. First we had to use sponges to move water from bucket to bucket. Then we had to spread out in a line and throw a Frisbee from person to person. Once you were positioned you could only take 1 step. From there we played beer pong.  Then moved an egg down the line from spoon to spoon. Then ran puzzle pieces one at a time to where other team members put it together. Then had to pass a hoola-hoop down a line of team members without letting go of each other’s hands.  Another fun, unique and silly moment.   This felt competitive but fun and there was more shared laughter between all the team members than I recall from Queen of hearts past.

Then there was a final team grand melee, followed by Queen’s War (where Sagan beat me down with big weapons).  Post that we did some clean up.

The observant among us might have noticed the arrived of Twenaria, Cecil, Shandar, and Kiira who hadn't been with us for the full weekend.  They had come for a special reason, Rel (Aaron Metzger) was inducted into the Knights of the Eternal Flame.

The event concluded with awards (where I finally got a crown), thank yous (that will always feel inadequate to express the gratitude I feel), hugs, packing up and heading home, appreciative and tired.

I Am The Storm by Becky "Kovaks" Baron

Bardic written and performed by Becky "Kovaks" Baron at Queen of Hearts XXV

When I was young, my studies had me travel
To island after island on the sea
When we were under sail
I’d be standing by the rail
Thinking ‘bout my life in front of me

My teacher saw me as a future envoy
My parents saw me carrying their trade
Everyone could see
Who I was, apparently
And who I would become if I had stayed

I no longer look for answers off the starboard bow
Things have been a’changing, and I’m different now
Ever since I made my landfall, my life has taken form
I am the storm

I’ve seen ships be torn asunder by the lightning
I’ve seen oaken masts be splintered by the gale
I’ve seen captains strong and grand
And the sailors they command
Lose life and limb to swirling wind and hail

I took the thunder and the lighting and the driving rain
And harnessed them together by my will
This great force of strength and awe
Is a power I can draw
And conquer those who dare to wish me ill

I no longer look for answers off the starboard bow
Things have been a’changing, and I’m different now
Ever since I made my landfall, my life has taken form
I am the storm

The storm that sends shivers down the spines of those who sail
Is the force I have embodied to ensure that I prevail
To weather any storm you need a ship that’s strong and sound
And the best ships I have traveled are the friendships I have found

They say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger
They say facing your fears makes you brave
These things that people say
Made me who I am today
Arisen like a phoenix from the waves

I no longer look for answers off the starboard bow
Things have been a’changing, and I’m different now
Ever since I made my landfall, my life has taken form
I am the storm

What You Missed- Queen of Hearts- The Queen's Edition (Part 2)

By Rose "Arryn" Whittle, The Storm Queen:

I arrived in Rhiassa with Captain Orion, anticipating a fun and intense day of tournaments and war maneuvers. I knew my team was the smallest team to take the field, but I was thrilled with the enthusiasm that they approached the challenge with. After setting up our day camp, we readied our team for introductions. Team Phoenix and Team Salt Queen both had an amazing showing, and truth be told, I was afraid our introduction would not live up to theirs, but Captain Orion did splendidly.

My true supporters: Captain Orion, Court Seer Esmeralda, First Archer Darvan, and Lord Sir Kovaks, stood proud and set the mood of our team: we were a team that was there to compete, and even if we were outmatched, we would hold our heads high and not go down without a fight.

The first war maneuvers took nearly all of our team, while Kovaks and Mayumi stayed back and
maintained day camp, making sure that everyone on the team stayed in good health throughout the day.

The war maneuvers for the most part went as we expected them to, which unfortunately meant we placed third nearly every time. Nonetheless, I took the field with my team, and our generals Orion and Darvan made excellent use of what advantages we had, those being our mobility and our ranged superiority. I don’t think there was a single fight where Ashenmark’s great tower shields were not present. The castle battles were one of the battles we fared the best, with Mayerling’s archers and the coordinated volley of Zinc, Kara, and me launching lightning bolts into their second line. Ultimately, in our defense against Team Salt Queen, we brought the fight to them, breaking out of the gate to the left and opening their shield line for our archers. While we still lost the fight, I couldn’t have been happier with my team’s performance and high spirits. Ultimately, the sportsmanship displayed on the field on all sides made the day fantastic, despite the rain which drenched the entire field.

After war maneuvers and individual tournaments had concluded for the day, the fun continued into the noncombat tournaments. Again, the dedication and sportsmanship that all teams brought absolutely blew me away. Personally, I could not have been happier with the dress that Mayumi made for me, everything about it felt great. The performances were all fun and interesting, each team giving their performance its own flair. Lastly, the jester tournament was hilarious, Kara, Rolland, and Tulli made a great comedy trio.

The following day, the tournaments and war maneuvers proceeded in much the same way, but with much less rain, though not without the threat of it. Fortunately for us, the rain held off just long enough to get through the award ceremony and clean up afterwards.

What You Missed- Queen of Hearts- The Queen's Edition (Part 1)

By Nhadala “Salt Queen” Kinder of Grimloch

The long awaited weekend arrived - my first debut as a true queen. The beginning of the title felt like some far off dream - just an off-hand comment made by someone, and it stuck. I never imagined that it would gather so much momentum that I’d be standing in front of a group of followers, willing to shed blood in my name. Thoughts circled my mind - “will I make them proud? Will I be worthy of their loyalty?”

I took on as much as I could to keep my team’s spirits up. I planned and I prepped, not to win, but to make sure that those who chose to stand by my side wouldn’t regret it.

It became so much more than that.

I was away from the team for a majority of the time, taking on many competitions - Aces, One Path, Spirit and Steel, and Cleaved all took me away from them. I can’t express how much my heart filled as I still heard their cries of my name when going into battle, even though I was across site or inside a building.

So I kept putting myself out there. Battle after battle, win after loss, I couldn’t let them down. I dug into parts of me that I thought were lost. Saegan and I often joke with the phrase “don’t believe in yourself - believe in the me that believes in you,” but damn, it rang true during Queen of Hearts. How could I not believe in myself when I watched these warriors and mages run themselves ragged in my name?

I screamed, I fought, I smiled, I laughed, I panicked,  I cried, and I sang… I sang, and I finally looked up when it was done to see a standing ovation. It was then that I heard the cheers and support of the world and community that I built myself into. My team, loudest and proudest of all.

In character and out of character, this weekend has changed me. I took on leadership, and felt it’s rewards. I believe in myself again. I can see what I can do, and feel the strength of those who are not behind me, but right at my side. I wouldn’t give up any of them for the world - for we bring out the best in each other.

Support Caster Woes by Sarah Fournier

Bardic written and performed by Sarah Fournier for Queen of Hearts XXV

Phoenix walked onto the field,
While Temorse lifted his shield,
But she didn’t see the elbows
Her hand goes up to her nose,
to protect her from the blows;
It’s just another tragic tale of support caster woes

Knocked off a bridge
Piked in the face
Groping strangers in awkward places
These are the woes of a support caster

5 people call out for repairs
Your support caster mind’s in despair
Surrounded by a world of peril
Fighters don’t know the struggle
Well they’re gonna get an earful
It’s just another tragic tale of support caster woes

Knocked off a bridge
Piked in the face
Groping strangers in awkward places
These are the woes of a support caster

My armored cloak is coming apart at the seams
I swear I didn’t mean to grab your butt
You realize it takes 15 seconds to repair your armor, right?
I cant kill anything with this stupid dagger
That awkward moment when you accidentally raise the enemy
It’s just another tragic tale of support caster woes

Knocked off a bridge
Piked in the face
Groping strangers in awkward places
These are the woes of a support caster

On the front lines, hammering away at your chainmail
Avoiding missiles, arrows and pikes that impale
Throat hurts from all the shouting
Armorless fighters who won’t stop pouting
Knocked off a bridge
Piked in the face
Groping strangers in awkward places
These are the woes of a support caster
These are the woes of a support caster
These are the woes of a support caster
