What You Missed: Thursday Night Questing 1, 2, & 3

By: Kersten “Ypnn” Prince

A Guide to Doors, Red Demonoids, Conga Lines, and Freeze Golems Thus Far

As with all stories, I will start at the beginning of the occurences.

Back during Fall, Captain Orion was holding a fight practice in one of the militia’s buildings. A well-sized group had gathered for the evening’s practice, but during a moment when Orion stepped out in search of something since forgotten, a strange door rimmed in a glowing blue light opened, with a “scientist” and a healer stepping out to greet us. They asked us for our help, which we of course accepted, and ushered us through this door before going into the full explanation.

See the doors, according to both their explanation and the help my fellow travelers gave me in understanding this, act as these “portal” things that can send people between “dimensions” and worlds and the like. I for one could not follow along with these things very well and am working on looking into stories to learn more about these, but what was more important was the waypoints. Waypoints, as I can best recall, are these places of power that are often found and kept safe by the rangers of the group this scientist and healer are with. When it comes to both waypoints and the people who deal with these waypoints and doors, things can become corrupted, causing them to lose hope in a more tangible method than normal. Sometimes, through defeating these red demon-like creatures that often would try to take over the waypoints, sources of hope would be dropped, which could in theory be used on people and waypoints that had lost hope.

In this particular case, the scientist and healer needed our help to free a waypoint. The healer aided us in navigating through portals and surviving the onslaught of the red demonoids, though - as I personally was dead when it occurred - I found out after one narrow escape that the healer had been left behind at one door, leaving her to barely escape and be quite frustrated when she did. We also commonly found ourselves in a few similar “hallways” where this “janitor” seemed to frequent, as though in an infinite loop of cleaning these hallways. We ran into the janitor again in a later instance, but this particular one ended in the success of our group as some of our fellow travelers who were skilled in puzzles were able to solve multiple to free the waypoint. We were returned to the Chimeron militia building as if in the same moment we had left, oddly enough.

It was not long until each of us were asked for again. Having frustrated the healer, the scientist alone was there to greet us. She explained to us how this time, unlike previously, the problem her rangers had faced was not with a waypoint but rather with an “Object of Power”, or “OOP”. It at the moment seemed to have some problems with shooting lightning bolts, which we immediately confirmed as we went through a door to deal with the problem. With part of the group trying to solve the corruption puzzle and the part protecting these people, we eventually solved a puzzle that ultimately caused the OOP to head off.

Side note found by a friend: Do not touch any strange circular items, no matter how it attempts to convince you to do so. This friend who of course did so was trapped in a case of doing the entire lightning bolt room over again, a process that took hours to complete.

In pursuit of the OOP through a hallway, we found ourselves in a different yet even more peculiar situation. Music rang through the room as a “conga line” that repeatedly split off to attack us traveled through the room. Any part that we defeated would simply be revived to rejoin this conga line, causing us to realize that the only way to defeat this conga line was through killing each part’s soul, a process that took a long time as we constantly had to try to outpace the revival tricks of the OOP. It again retreated through a few hallways, leading us through yet another increasingly strange room that seemed to change before our eyes. This took a while to pass through as some friends were more… frazzled by these changes than others, requiring one to even be knocked out and dragged along to manage to escape the room.

We ended up at a crossroads following these two rooms, three pathways that were easily navigated with a “Find the Path” spell. We found ourselves within a room where red demonoids swarmed behind a barrier, with the OOP in the center of the mess. Through much hard work and the janitor coming in to inform us that he had a way to cleanse the OOP with aid of the sources of hope we had been collecting, we managed to steal the OOP for just long enough to turn its red glow into that of blue yet again. With a last minute cantrip used to identify the newly cleansed OOP, we learned that it could be charged with a pool spell to be infinitely used, which we agreed to discuss next time we reconvened.

During our most recent excursion through the doors, after charging the OOP with Repair Armor we found ourselves to be stuck primarily within just one massive room. The scientist and multiple of her rangers had been trapped throughout the room, including a few that were trapped by these odd golems that to us appeared to freeze people, though even should their eyes be open these people afterwards seemed to have no recollection of what occurred specifically while they were frozen - I was frozen once or twice myself, hence why I am aware of this. We found that, should the OOP be held in a circle, all those within the circle were either unfrozen or remained unaffected by these golems. Through making use of this while others managed to solve puzzles, we managed to free the scientist and the rangers. This, of course, caused us to become very confused when seemingly suddenly the rangers turned on us, affected by the red lights. Every time we cut them down, unless they were impaled they consistently returned to a circle of red energy, which when crossed by one of our fellow travelers caused them to be affected by the energy in a similar manner to the rangers. Despite our best efforts, we could not find a way to deal with this evil, hardly managing to make it out with all of our non-affected travelers alive.

I, for one, look forward to our next excursion in hopes that we can find more ways to bring hope into these dark places and thwart any that continue to seep hope out of good people. As my people say, act with wisdom, but act.

Special Announcement: Neurodiversity Guild

Hey friends! As some of you may know, I started a group for my up and coming project, the Realms Neurodiversity Guild. The Realms Neurodiversity Guild is a group to help provide support in the Realms for neurodiverse people, or people who have certain neurological or mental health differences such as autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, anxiety disorders, and others. You don’t need to be neurodiverse or reveal any diagnoses to join or participate. Here’s a link to the group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/218473752047020/ It’s private, but you just send a request to join and I’ll add you as soon as I see it.

Since this project is relatively new and a work in progress, we are trying something out at Feast of Leviathan - a tentatively named Zone of Meditation. The Zone of Meditation will be a quiet space in the back hallway. The plan is to make it a space for overwhelmed players and staff to decompress. This will be a phone/technology-friendly zone (as some people utilize tech to relax), there will be adult coloring pages and colored pencils, books, playing cards, ear plugs, yarn and crochet hooks, fidgets, a water jug and cups, and blankets and pillows will be provided for warmth and comfort.

This Zone of Meditation is a trial run, so please try it out and don’t hesitate to provide me with constructive feedback or ideas.

Thanks all, and see you at Feast of Leviathan!

Why I Want to Go- Feast of the Leviathan XXII: Hearth and Home

by Renee "Kindrianna" Booke

Deep in the heart of winter, there exists a time-honored feast so delightful that it melts the dreary cold from the bones and lures us from our dens with the promise of food, fun, and good company. I’m talking, of course, about Feast of Leviathan! This year, Rhiassa celebrates the feast’s twenty-second year running and I am delighted to attend.

For those of you who might have missed it, the team is moving towards a more open hall during the daytime. People who like to wander about and socialize may enjoy this change, for it doesn’t require you to be seated at your table to enjoy tasty treats and appetizers. Servers will have platters of food circling the halls, and there is also going to be a revolving station for more, plus a bar serving the famous Rhiassan Fruit Fizz.

One of my personal favorite things about Feast of Leviathan has always been the ambiance. In many ways, it feels like a Festival with all its liveliness. Merchants line the halls with their finely crafted wares, and nearby the Gilded Lion Carnival is set up for adventurers to try their hand at winning gold or other prizes. There are so many games and non-combat tournaments, puzzles, and Bardics that you won’t be lacking in things to do. I rather like watching my friend Mogar engage in the drama and intrigue of Merchant Barons. It is here that I first heard him utter the phrase “Orconomics.” If that wasn’t enough to get you pumped, however, then maybe this will wow you! On top of everything else they are offering, Rhiassa has arranged for a showing by Rhiassan Cub Care, The Chimeron Casino Royale and the Adventurer’s Guild!

When the evening comes the Realms gathers to read off the results of the View from Valehaven Awards, and we, as a community, get to celebrate how lucky we are that we have so many amazing and creative contributors that make us what we are. There are bound to be smiling faces that we all love and recognize which makes it even more delightful to share in that joy and sense of accomplishment.

So, put on your boots and pick up your shovels, heroes of the Realms! Dig yourselves free and come and join me in the halls of Rhiassa where we can enjoy delicious food and an event that promises to be fun for everyone.

His excellent Nertail has closed the borders to New Verai. It's been declared this is temporary while the Magistrate and healers search for the source of a sickness that has been sweeping the land. No other information was made available and no indication was given as to when the boarders will open again.

Stacked Deck What You Missed Part 2 - Gambling

by James "Tao" Murphy

It was a dark and stormy day
Sixteen players came to play
Some questers came to find the stuff
Wooden golems in the rough
Some dealers came to earn gold lots
Some cooks came to, um, plug in crock pots?

We drew for seats at ten and thirty, each of the players starting their strategy to where they were going to sit. They earned the choice of seats based on how well they did throughout the year. Two tables of 8 players were determined.

Each player was presented with a glass that had their name which they could use to show where they would be sitting. As they were eliminated, they were presented with a decal with the number they came out of the tournament. Better than certificates.

While poker was the main event, we also had the full Clontarf casino available, Blackjack, let-it-ride, Roulette, and for a to brief 12 minutes, craps. (anyone want to learn how to deal craps? Contact me)

Before play started a few players placed bets on who they though would win or at least come in top 3, there were several surprises throughout the day that made many of these bets easy money for the house, err, not very successful. Better luck next year.

(if you wish to place any interesting bets on how the new season will end, please contact Tao)

With all players seated play started at 11, round after round players kept at it, the first to drop was a crowd favorite and the 1018 season champion Sir Avendar. He had lost a lot of chips on a hand that almost anyone else would have as well, both players had two pair, aces over, but unfortunately for him it was decided by the second pair, and queens won out over threes.

While I did not keep track of everyone’s place a few notables got my attention. The 1017 season champion Sir Zatarra, lasted to almost half the field, leaving just before the players united to one table after 5 hours of play.

About this time judging happened for those that brought something for the potluck. There were several ties in categories, and I hope I was able to award everyone first place gold to anyone who brought something. (If I missed you, or you left before “dinner break” come find me)

When the tables combined Sir Mathies the 1015 season champion had a sizable chip stack, possibly the biggest on the table, but he alas he went “card dead” and his stack dwindled until he finished 5th on an all-in blind hand. It was the hand to do it with he had an ace. But Jayce had a played a Queen Nine, and the board had the rest of the cards necessary for him to have the straight.

This left Jayce, Rilan, Runaris, and Belle. All had had their ups and downs. Chip stacks had gone back and forth. It was not the final four I think anyone expected and it turned out to be quite exciting.

Fourth place went to Belle (145 gold) who was competitive right to the end. Her play has changed over the last few years, and she constantly made moves and bets that confounded the rest of the players. “I don’t know her 5k bet means”

When third place went out it was a hand that could have happened to anyone. No raise preflop, just the blinds played. The board came: six, six, six. Rilan checked, Runaris checked, the turn came: eight. Bet-raise-all in-call, Rilan showed he had the eight for a full house, but Runaris had the 4th six. Quads won the hand and Rillan came out third (and collated 430 gold).

When Runaris took out Rillan he acquired quite a chip stack and in these situations, it is usually just a mater of time. Jayce held out, made some moves, and survived for quite a while, but eventually they both found hands they thought had a chance of winning.

Jayce walked away with 860 gold in second place

Congratulations to Runaris the 1019 season stacked deck winner who ended up with something special after winning the final hand with just and Ace seven.

What You Missed - The Questing from Stacked Deck Final Table 1020 and Questing

by Timothy "Jerrickiv Jerrickson of Jerrick Farms" Suitor

Oh Gosh!  I had heard that Mr. Sir Tao had lost some things recently, so this past Saturday I made my way to Castle Clarntarf in Blackwood to see if I could help him find his stuff while he was occupied with the tournament.  There I found Elric, Gundalf, Viet, and my friend Thoril, who were all there to help as well.  Tao explained his stuff had been going missing, but he has been pretty sure he hasn’t been losing it.

It’s hard, when someone starts to get old.  As an adventurer and a gambler, Mr. Sir Tao is a proud and confident man.  But when the ForgetMe’s start to set in… It’s sad to watch.
But he said his stuff was missing, and asked us to go out and look for it.  The four of us agreed, but as we were about to go out when we decided to take inventory of ourselves.  Thoril was a fighter I guess, but he didnt have any armor.  Elric was confident in his ability to get back up, while Gundalf and I were a bit more skilled in helping and healing.  Oh Gosh, it wasnt looking to promising.  Then Sir Kovacks offered to lend Mr Thoril a suit of armor, and Gundalf lent me a special shield that protected me more as well.  Feeling a little more confident like, we went out!
We got out there into the snow and found some wooden creatures.  I tried asking them if they had seen anything that may have been Sir Tao’s, but they attacked us!  They accused us of making homes from the entrails of their kin, and burning their dead to heat our houses, and oh gosh, well, they’re not wrong, but is that something we really need to worry about?  Are all trees people?  I’ve met two nice tree people, but do we always have to avoid working with wood?!  Oh gosh, oh gosh…

Well as we were fighting them, they started swinging a big ol’ axe at us, then when we managed to get it, it turned out to be Tao’s 6’6” Mythrail Axe. With that, Mr. Thoril was able to cut our way through further.  Oh gosh, Thoril sure talks about genocide a lot…

We were able to get to a chest, and as we did there began a cold and encroaching snow.  Gundalf and I barely made it out!

Inside we opened the chest and found, oh gosh it was scary, a doll of Mr. Sir Tao, with a knife sticking out of it.  There were also a lot of pieces of paper, a torn up plan we had to reassemble.
Plan to get revenge on Tao.  Kidnap a carpenter, Steal Tao’s stuff to lure him out, Get the carpenter to make a bunch of wood golems, seemed to be about the gist of it.

Well I didn’t much like the look of that.  We took a minute to warm up and get a bite, then left right away!  (Mr. Viet stayed behind, he found it more lucrative to run a table at the casino)  This time we fought a buncha trolls it looked like.  Maybe goblins, but awful tough like ones, they were tossing around a big old rock.  Well The four of us figured out a plan.  We fought our way through them, which wasn’t very easy.  At this point Mr. Elric had used his… Oh Gosh, this is going to be public… His “special powers” to make Thoril and Gundalf easier for him to raise.  I’m pretty familiar with this healing, I’m from Stonewood.  We fought through these trolls and found warm rings on them.  Big old rings.  Hoop like.

Well ahead there was a very cold area.  Real cold.  Elric jumped in and got frozen stiff almost right away!  We pulled him out, and took a look.  There were a lot of trolls inside.  Most of them were shivering something fierce, but some were standing on platforms or standing in hoops!  Well we began laying out a path of hoops, and collecting them behind us as we went.  It was real tricky.  They were fighting us pretty hard and trying to take our warm hoops.  And one was so far away, using one of those long spear thingys.  A pretty nicely made one.  Green and white, the tip glowing a little.  It probably took us a bit to long to realize that was another one of Sir Tao’s stolen things.  But we recovered it! We tried to turn around, and found our path was blocked off! So we spotted another exit, and slowly got out of that super cold area.

It also got pretty dangerous from a nifty little nature thing.  When trees freeze quickly, sometimes the water in them expands to much in one spot, causing it to explode out with wooden Splinters.  Well if you got hit with any of those, it hurt real bad like.  And just like getting the first stages of Frostbite, even after healing, a limb would still take half a minute or so to get moving again.  And even then it wasn’t fun.

Well right on the other side of that cold area was the carpenter!  She was bickering back and forth with a cute woodland spirit.  They were arguing about man’s use of wood, and how that hurts trees and such.  Gosh, it’s a scary argument when you consider how everything is kinda alive.  I mentioned that, and my views on it because ever since I visited Teng Hua, I’ve been a little more in tune with the spirits of the land, and the cute woodland spirit talked to me about that for a bit.  Gundalf and Thoril spoke to the carpenter, meanwhile Elric enacted the other part of the plan.  After a few beats in the conversation, Elric grabbed the frozen treasure chest, and ran!  With so many strong monsters we were fighting, we had agreed to grab what we thought was important, and regroup away from scary monsters.  We figured a hit and run might suit us a bit better.  Unfortunately he ran straight into an invisible wall!  After a little more convincing for the carpenter to come with us, the Woodland spirit offered to lead us back to the castle, so we wouldn’t have to back track.  Which was good, because it was then that Trolls began to attack again.  Luckily we were able to get away.  But barely.

We got back in, and began the process to thaw the chest.  Layers and layers of ice surrounded it, and inside the ice as we peeled it away, was gold!  Gosh, Imagine being so rich that a chest frozen from your house has over a hundred gold in the ice outside it!  Well, we managed to that it out, and split the gold between the four of us, 28 for each of us!  Oh gosh, that’s almost a third of what Jerrick Farms makes in a year!

Well once the ice was melted, we had to get into the chest, which was puzzling.  Very very puzzling to get through.  But between Thoril, Elric and I, we made our way through one lock at a time.  When the last lock was opened though, oof, I don’t know, but I came back to life about two minutes later…  The chest contained some scraps of material that were being used to make wood golems, another one of Tao’s missing items, and a map.  The carpenter came back by around then.

The carpenter told us her friend Mary had also been taken, and we had to rescue her. Well, I don’t much like the thought of anyone being in danger, so we suited back up and went out there.  Gundalf wasn’t to thrilled to be leaving his gambling table, and oh, could I see why!  But he wasn’t about to let us go off on our own, so the four of us went back out.  Oh boy, did we…

We squared up, the four of us with two daggers, a three foot, and Tao’s big 6’6” axe, against four wood constructs.  Three of them shield fighters, and one with a big sword to match the axe.  Welp.  We gave it a go. And the first shot landed all well and good on one of their legs, and we started to celebrate, until the next hit on it reset its armor.  Then we landed a shot on one of the others and confirmed.  It was the four of us versus wooden machines working like clockwork!  Up an icy hill.  Oh gosh, it was tough.

There was a lot of running away, I’ll tell ya that much.  A shuffling on ice kinda running away.  There was one shinier faced one that was also heckling and being a touch mean.  But they also really didn’t like Sir Tao, which I felt pretty bad about.

In the scurrying we found a sheep, vaguely matching Mary’s description, and it was scared and wouldn’t budge without something to eat.  Thoril and Elric ran off to the castle to take bread from the rich, and Gundalf and I… Did our best.  I hid with Mary behind a shield belonging to Sir Tao, that bore the Tenguanise sigil for fire, Tao’s Fire Emblem. Eventually some of the constructs got to me, and ya know, I sure did manage to defeat them.  I locked up the first one getting real close like with the shield I was borrowing, and figured out the order, and shut it down.  I tried real hard to get Mary to get outta there, but she wouldn’t go anywhere without a snack.  Elric got back with some bread, and we tried to feed Mary, but the shiny faced one came toward us.  Well, I figured we didn’t have much to lose, so I attacked it in the same order, and it worked!  It went down, and I found Sir Tao’s magic dagger on it!

At that point we got Mary moving and we got outta dodge!  A bit more scurrying, my leg went out on the hill, but I was able to keep going.  We got Gundalf, and left while we could.  We came back inside, warmed up, got Sir Tao his missing items back, and had a nice evening of gambling and spending time together, enjoying the food, and the excitement of the Stacked Deck Finals behind us.
Oh, and Mary the Sheep followed me home!  Now we have three Sheep on Jerrick Farms, Cloak, Blanket, and Mary!
