How do I select who I am going to work with and establish the relationship of Knight to Squire: by Henry "Gulliam" Giasson

How do I select who I am going to work with and establish the relationship of Knight to Squire:
In support of this series of articles, I will try to articulate how I go about considering who I will work with specifically as a squire. Allow me to first say that I am willing to work with anyone who comes to me with respect and a desire to learn. The process of establishing a squire to knight relationship is a bit different.

A knight that I respect once said that he squires someone that he sees as a Knight already. I don’t quite go that far, but I do squire only someone who I see the potential in, and see that potential as strong. For my part, I look at potential for leadership, desire for excellence, and the aptitude to learn and achieve competences. When I selected my first squire, he was an intelligent player who had been a caster and a fighter. He understood the system all around and wanted to achieve more. He had some learning curves, but was not someone who was malicious. He expressed a desire to learn and achieve. My second squire was someone who initially I had very little in common with. Ironically, we discovered we had a lot in common. He, again, was intelligent, well spoken, proficient, and had the desire to strive to greatness. The next person that I would work closely with is someone who I was asked to by my order. Initially I was uncertain about him, but immediately he demonstrated an excellence beyond what I expected and was taking initiative to be a standard bearer in his peer group and in the realms.

When I have a squire, I expect them to learn the game in all of its aspects. I expect someone to: know combat and do it well and safely; know the spell system; be able to marshal (combat, magic, and questing); make costume; make and inspect armor; make and inspect weapons; throw an event; learn how rank in the realms society works and respect the chain of command; know the command structure of major nations; know knights from all prominent orders;  and understand the IC social workings of the realms. When I was a squire to Nate Carr (Sir Aelias), he said something profound to me. “a leader is above and before all else, a Positive Influence”. I expect a squire and a knight to be that influence on others and on the game. I hold a very high standard and very high expectations. I expect excellence, or at the very least a constant effort to achieve and learn more. Another thing that I learned from Nate is that regardless of my own proficiencies, I am not the best at everything. Outside influence is huge to the learning curve. Nate had me learn every weapon style from 2 different knights in the realms. I learned leatherworking from 2 different people, sewed with at least 2 different people, etc. This gave me different thoughts, mentorships, and forced me to become familiar with people whom I might otherwise not have known and from well outside of my peer group. I spent events shadowing magic marshals and magic marshaled events. I was primarily a fighter character, but I NPC’ed casters, played my alt caster, and was quizzed and even advised Nate on spell application at events. I say all of this not to tout what my squireship was nor to show my resume. It is to give an idea as to what I expect and where those expectations came from. When I am looking at who I will mentor to the squire to knight level, I look at someone who can learn, is willing to push, is active enough to mentor and track, and who genuinely has the potential for greatness. I also look for a certain dedication and resiliency. It is a long road with me.

I also usually start scouting someone well before the conversation of squiring ever comes into play. Sometimes it is because they approach me and ask to learn. Sometimes even just one quick lesson unrelated to being a knight. Sometimes it is someone who just catches my interest through working with them or noticing how they carry themselves and what they do. I would say, if you want to work with me, walk up and ask. If it is wanting to work on a specific skill set that you think that I can assist you with, or wanting to pursue the relationship through to knighthood be up front with me.

The final thing that I look for is how someone does or does not fit into an order that I am a knight in. In order for me to have one of my orders’ support in Knighting an individual, I have to believe, and have others believe, that they will well represent that order and have the mission of that knighthood reflected in their deeds.

Voting for the View from Valehaven Awards- by Angela "Phoenix" Gray

Voting will soon for the View from Valehaven Awards. I've been helping Ian prepare nominations and prep for voting, as I've been doing it, I got thinking that we don't really provide much advice for newer players on participating.

I jotted my thoughts on the topic to share and encourage others to reinforce, add to, or provide contrary advice in the comments.

1. Vote- If you step back and think about it, an insane amount of work goes into the game each year and we have very few ways of recognizing and appreciating the quality contributers and events. The award system isn't without flaws but it is one of the best we have.

2. Make your votes based on YOUR opinion- Don't vote for a person/event/group because it is what it seems like "everyone" is doing, or because you are connected to that person or group unless you feel they truly deserve it. One frequent critique of the awards are that they are a popularity contest, and I won't deny that popularity does have an impact, BUT it is only as much of one if we as a community allow it to be.

3. Don't stress- No one in game gets to every event or knows everyone. We all end up voting in some categories where we haven't compared all the nominees. As I mentioned the system has flaws and something that is amazing can get overlooked if a smaller number of people are aware of it. It. If you do have some lesser known people or events you thought were great and ended up voting for, letting them know will likely be appreciated.

4. Don't be afraid to not vote. If you don't feel like you have a real opinion on it (for example if when reading the nominees for "best dish" you didn't try any of them), or you didn't feel the nominees you were exposed to are deserving in your mind just abstain from voting on that category.

5. Generally people are good about nominating those they think are really deserving but occasionally they get confused or have an opinion that would vary greatly from others. Don't assume that everyone nominated in a category are in a narrow range in regards to quality. Use it as one piece of information to help form your opinions.

Double Feature- Order of the List Changes for 2015 & Blackwood Clontarf Casino Order of the List 2015 Wagering

The fifth season of the Order of the List is imminent, and the members have been busy working on possible solutions to issues we have seen arise over the last couple of seasons.  Below are our official rules changes for the 2015 season, followed by a short rationale:

Total Order of the List certified tournament events limited to (10) for the 2015 season.

One major issues we witnessed especially last season was an abundance of fatigue and burnout from what turned out to be an especially relentless regular season.  There will be (8) events open to the Realms at large, with the final two being held by the members of the Order of the List.  If the members do not decide to use the final two slots they will become available on or before July 31st, 2015.  All slots will be first come, first served, but we are trying to limit each nation’s allotment to (1) per group.  For instance, if Feast of Grimloch and Tournaments of Grimloch are both on the calendar only a single event will count for the OOTL.  If there are special scenarios that require further consideration the OOTL will deliberate and make a judgement call.  The official address to submit event registrations is orderofthelist@gmail.com.  We will make an announcement when the slots are filled.

Mandatory offseason running from two weeks before Invitational until Feast of Leviathan the following year.

There will be no OOTL certified events from the weekend two weeks before the Invitational until Feast of Leviation the following January. One factor that may have lead to fatigue and burnout last season was the lack of an offseason.  The following weekend after the Invitational was the beginning of the next season.  By enforcing an offseason we hope to give everyone a break after each challenging season.  This also provides an opportunity for Artisan’s Tiered Tournaments ( OOTL co-administered initiative with the Tournaments of the Void) to run without competition from the standard OOTL tournaments.

All supplies needed to run a tournament must be provided by the event staff in order to have Order of the List members help staff the event.

This specifically includes tournaments lists, notecards, and clipboards if necessary.  Another requirement is hydration/snacks available reasonably close to where the tournaments will be occurring.

Event Holders must supply at least two dedicated staff members (non-OOTL members) to the tournaments.

This serves two different purposes.  The first is to help train more marshals to run tournaments in the future to lessen the marshaling load of the members of the OOTL.  The second is to provide more opportunities for the other OOTL initiatives (The “Pit”, Marshaling seminars, etc.) to make appearances at events.

This is the first year we have experimented with major changes to the general OOTL tournament system, and we ask that everyone bear with us as we navigate through what will be a ground-breaking year.  For events that may not end up certified due to the event restrictions in the coming season, we recommend you still look into the other services that the OOTL offers (Marshaling training, Combat Training, and Artisan’s Tiered tournaments) that we would be more than happy to provide no matter the event. If there are further questions feel free to contact any member of the OOTL and we will respond as quickly as possible. We wish everyone good luck and great fights in this coming year of competition.

Blackwood Clontarf Casino Order of the List 2015 Wagering
The what and how

This year the Clontarf Casino is trying something new. We are accepting bets on Order of the list 2015. Get your bets in early as I will not be taking bets at the event.

The types of bets we are accepting are getting into the top 16, placement after cuts, (top 8, top 4, etc.). I will be taking bets on individuals to win certain events.” I bet that Phoenix will win the sword and marn”, (very good odds on that one…). I will also entertain any prop bets you want to discuss with me, my over/under on weapons breaking in 2014 was 4.

I will not accept negative bets, i.e. “I bet that Eldridge does not make the top 16 this year”.  I will also not accept any bets on Myself, Sir Tao, (I have my own motivations).

All bets will be in 5 gold increments. They will be written as 5:5, a 5 gold bet will win you 5 gold for a total of 10 gold, 5:1 a 5 gold bet will win you 1 gold, or a 6 gold payoff, 5:15 a 5 gold bet will win you 15 for a 20 gold payoff.

The why.

I like to make gold. It goes with, I like to spend gold.

I have made some of these bets with a few people in private in past years and I thought I might open it up.

Betting is fun. Two people with a different idea of an outcome can decide what they think there opinion is worth.

Motivation. Many of the bets I have received so far have been about motivation. Either Self-motivation, ”I bet lots of gold on myself and this will give me the kick I need to get to practices”. Or coach motivation”, I bet gold on you to make top 16, now get out there and hit the events to make points” . Either way it becomes a reason to become a better fighter, to train with different weapons, to hit events that you might not have normally.

and the who

so far only one person has bet on themselves 5:14. (a very large bet, see my bit about motivation)
All bets have been for even odds or better, so far no one has bet on what I would consider a favorite.

Without giving names, I have taken in over 2000 gold so far. The best odds I have given were 5:15, the worst was 5:5. not a single bet has been made on anyone that was in the top 16 in 2014.

So I will see you at practices, I will see you at tournament events, and hopefully I will see you as part of a group of 15 other people who will be in a small room waiting for our names to be called in November.

10 Questions- Zach "Rubis" Senchuk

How long have you been playing?
Queen of Hearts 2006 was my first event, so a little over 8 years now.

How has the game changed since you've been playing?
The game adopted 2 new weapon cores since my time playing, first graphite and then now bamboo. Armor has become extremely accessible with more people making leather armor and how cheap and easy ( but time consuming) it is to make neoprene shirts, or for a bit more money to get shark-mail. Newer players seem to pick up armor quicker than when I started. I remember thinking the people with armor were so cool.

Who have you learned the most from?
Angela Earle Gray or Phoenix of Folkestone has been my mentor for close to 6 years, I have learned so much more than I ever knew I would when I first accepted the Squire-ship. I can't thank her enough for all the lessons learned, and some of them not so easily. She has helped me become a better player but was also a huge influence in my life in times where I was very much growing up. I see a lot of things in the game differently and expanded to become friends with different kinds of people from every corner of the game, that opportunity is priceless.
A couple honorable mentions have to be written about because like Phoenix, Jason Gray or Malaki of Folkestone has been there the whole way through my squireship both in and out of game just like Phoenix and his perspective and teachings still carry through to when I teach people the things I've learned.
The second honorable mention goes out to Alexander Sokolowski or Airivarri Nosetti who initially stepped up and vouched to keep me safe so my mother would let her 11-14 year old son go out and hit people with plumbing supplies.

What was your best moment IC?
My favorite moment was playing Rubis Nosetti at the event Return to Mythdrannor. To set the tone of the event, it was a 24 hour live quest that had no camp to store anything, so everything you intended to use that weekend had to be carried on you or hidden well enough that the NPCs looking for bags of stuff couldn't find them and steal everything you brought (a mistake I made early in the event). 12 adventurers including myself set out to explore the lands of Mythdrannor, filled with Demons, Goblins and Dark Elves people had to be very careful how they traveled. and I made friends with the 3 Drow that were wandering about also trying to collect these tokens that combined to form a runic key that allowed us into an abandoned elf fortress. It was very dark when this was completed, and one of the drow (Played by Jamie Banecroft) and I were well ahead of the group. We balanced across acid pits, dodged traps and snuck past squatting sentries that had taken residency. Being the only PC I had to be careful, but that idea went out the door when we came upon a caravan. Fearing for himself the drow told me to go in alone, the caravan entrance covered in cloth making the already dark night pitch black upon entering the wagon. Being very scared I inched through the cloth waiting for something to jump out at me, when nothing did I started to feel around the wagon, to my surprise I found a chest. Excited I lift the chest and dump the contents on my lap. Being thirsty and hungry I was excited to find food and water in the chest, along with an urn, an unidentified dagger, a pair of gloves, and a glowstick still in the wrapper. Eager to find out what the dagger was I immediately cracked the glowstick still in the wrapper and then peeled the wrapper off. With the new white light I inspect my surrounding area to get a better sense of my haul, only to be suddenly petrified with fear as everything in my vision ebbed and flowed. My legs, the walls and the ground moved like a black tide- I was engulfed in a small pond of 10,000 beetles. Ten. Thousand. Beetles. Like you might imagine I screamed at the highest pitch I have ever achieved in my life and I quickly started swatting at the beetles whilst I stood up. Still screaming and swatting at my legs, shirt, shoes and anywhere else I thought I might have felt something moving- all while running out of the the caravan. Jamie was outside dying of laughter and fuck you's were exchanged. The story gets better only when I elaborate that the black beetles turned out to be lady-bugs, and that Rubis is a sissy.

What was your best moment as a NPC/EH/Player?
Sneeky the Assassin is my favorite NPC to play. He is a re-occuring NPC that I've played over the years if staff has enough npc's for the main path or encounter and I am free to entertain the back of the questing party. He's a dagger caster with Assassin blade, Poison Weapon, Armor Piecing, Shapeshift, Feign Death, Heal Limb, and Seed of Life. I very VERY obviously sneak up on the back of the questing party, prancing and rolling behind trees, hiding behind saplings etc. If I get to the pc group without being spotted and pointed out I would use the assassin blade to hit someone. More often then not that wouldn't happen. In times where I would find pc's left behind is where I would seed them, and sometimes steal some of their garb and shapeshift into them roleplaying with the pc's as if I were one of them. I enjoy the lightheartedness of the character, he out of all of the npc's I've played makes me feel like I'm creating a good time for the questing party vs being an obstacle.

What would you like to see changed or developed more in game?
I would love to see a push towards having more and more garb for basic crunchies. I think it's the part of staff PC's interact with most during an event and more garb for them would help immerse people. I have seen things like this happening at Ashenmark and Rhiassa events (sorry if I missed your events and you do this) and I enjoyed the impact it had on me as a player.

What advice would you give new players?
To explore the game. I think the things you learn from different parts of the game are valuable in improving how you play regardless of where it is. To meet a few veterans who become comfortable around you. Having a couple veteran players who can help you become more incorporated with the community is a great opportunity to feel connected quicker.  Be humble, I think a lot can be said for players who are open to listening and implementing suggestions and lessons older players may be trying to give them. Learn how to fight, regardless if you don't want do tournies or npc, being able to take shots and throw them safely is the most important skill in the game.

What do you love most about the game?
I love the community. I can go to most parts of New England and have somewhere to stay within 30
minutes of where I am if an emergency happens. When something unfortunate takes its toll on a community member we come together to try and help that person, and that we promote a lot of skills transferable into the real world while making it fun to learn those skills. We are there to celebrate when fortune strikes a community member and we are there to help those things happen.  Above all that I personally feel connected because I grew up playing this game, and across multiple moves, new school friends, new sports I've played, new games I like, new hobbies I've picked up over the years- Realms has been the thing that has stayed the same, and I can't express how much I am happy that this game is a rock.

Who would you like to see the next interview be with?
John Tisdale, Zack Reynolds, Matt Butler, Nicole Laroche, Illy Golden, Peter King, Chalan Whelan, Josh Whelan, Paul Tilton, Steve Yazinka

Anything else you'd like to take the opportunity to put into print?
Look forward to telling and hearing more stories around a fire. :)

2014 View From Valehaven Recap- Part 2 And The Nominees Are

One of the responsibilities the View staff took on this year was reviewing the years worth of content and picking the nominees for the View awards related to our content. While the other nominee list won't come out till early next week, we're sharing this one early so you will have plenty of time to read any of the articles below you might have missed.

To explain our process any staff member could put anything on the list to consider for nomination. From there we each rated pieces on a scale of 1-5. If something was written by a staff member or there was a potential for bias (for example Kelly with the picture of Gwen), we abstained. The top 8 in each category are included. There are less in poetry/fiction as there were less than 8 pieces put forward for consideration.

2014 View From Valehaven Recap- Part 1 Interviews

WOW!!! What a year. We gained 3 new staff members, had a beloved one retire, published over 350 articles and had our average page views a month go up from 4,422 in 2013 to 5,795.

In fact, there has been so much going on we want to do a recap of 2014 to make sure you didn't miss a thing.

As always the "10 Questions" interviews remain a favorite. This past year we profiled the following:

In addition to talking to our veterans we also heard from some "Fresh Faces":
And new staff member Kelly "Twenaria" Bonci did a new take on View interviews moving them to an in-character forum as "Fireside Chats". She spoke with:
